Monday, June 5, 1922 SPORT CLASSY CARD FOR ARENA RE-OPENING For the Anaheim Athletic club's big re-opening Friday night at the open-air arena on the Sugar Factory grounds, Manager Billy Darnley has arranged an A-1 card of boxing. Six classy bouts have been lined up and action galore is assured. There are some high class boys on the bill. From the curtain-raiser to the main event, the card couldn't look better. Fans should go home with something to talk about. The feature will be between Young Dudley, the local colored flash, and Webb McIntyre of Philadelphia who will meet at 138-lbs. Dudley is going great guns, being in rare form and losing but one decision in his last 12 goes. He is hitting a good deal harder than formerly and his judgment of distance has improved considerably. McIntyre is rated a good boy at his weight. He is new on the coast, having arrived for the Quaker City only a couple of months ago. McIntyre so impressed Jack Dempsey, who is going thru daily workouts at Tommy McFarland's gym in Los Angeles, that the champion engaged him to act as one o this sparring partners. Dempsey is a great believer in having light, fast fellows in his camp as it tends to keep him speeded up. McIntyre is a hard-hitting, clever lad and he will give the colored lad a warm argument every step of the way. It promises to be a real main event. The semi-windup also comes in for a big share of the real class on the bill for when little Kid Louie, the fast 118-pounder from over Placentia way, tangles with Young Willie Jackson, the fur is going to Fly. Jackson is one sweet hitter for a youngster and one of his weight. He stopped PROPOSE TOURNEY OF LOCAL GOLFERS The latest thing in local sports is an Anaheim golf tourney. The inspiration for the event which should arouse keen interest is Claude Sidnam. There is a growing number of golf devotees here and Sidnam proposed that the local colony get together within the next month, probably playing off half the tourney at Newport and half at the Hacienda. Among the local golfers are Wm. A. Dolan, Dr. F. H. Houck, Claude and Harry Sidnam, Harry Hathaway, Bud Holland, Sidney Prince, Earl Ferris, Remaine Berger, William Dozier, Cotton Mather, George Dunton, Arch Fay, O. A. Mullinix, Geo. Harden, Dr. H. A. Johnston, Pete Weisel, Dr. Wm. Wickett, J. A. Clayes, Leonard Evans, Leo Sheridan, Percy Rust, Butch Morgan, B. Gibson, Harry D. Riley, Horace Benjamin and Richard Melrose. "There are no sharks here, practically every man taking a 24 handicap, which should tend to heighten the interest," says Sidnam. Baseball Standings PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE W. L. P.c. Elks Baseball league June 18, Manager Billy Knott this afternoon announced he had framed a game for next Sunday on the local high school field with Pasadent Elks Longtime rivals of the Bills here. Anaheim has twice defeated Pasadena best two out of three in the playoff of the So. Cal. championship. In no game does either team fight harder. Some of the promoters of the Pasadena team were not overly anxious about meeting Anaheim before the season opened for fear a defeat for them might take some of the starch from their heroes. However, Manager Knott was keen for a stiff rehearsal before the league season opens here with Pomona, so Manager Urey of Pasadena finally consented to the arrangement over phone this afternoon. Actors Hungry, “Props” Vanish ALMA RUBENS and HARRISON FORD in a Scene from the PARAMOUNT PICTURE FIND THE WOMAN A COSMOPOLITAN PRODUCTION “Find the Woman” Cast Eats Food Intended for Photographing When Cosmopolitan Productions photographed restaurant scenes in “Find the Woman,” an Arthur Somers Roche mystery story, the company used the Italian dining-room in the fashionable Hotel Ambassador in New York City. The waiters brought to the tables fine squabs, dalyty breast of chicken, lobster cocktails and other inviting dishes. The viands were supposed to be “properties”;that is, the actors were to peck at them as though eating but not to consume them as the scenes had to be photographed over and over again. But the two hundred players were hungry and the food was avidly eaten. When Tom Terriss, the director, was ready to photograph the action, after having rehearsed it half a dozen times he found the food was gone. He had to recall the waiters, order new “props,” and then berged his cost not to consume STEAMER COMPANIES COOPERATE WITH U. S. LIVERPOOL, June 9 — There is no foundation for the charges recently in certain sections of the press that the various trans-Atlantic steam ship lines have been insuing in a propagandist campaign against the United States immigration laws. On the contrary, the most hearty co-operation exists between the shipping companies and the authorities. The question arose with regard to the 3 per cent restriction law which made the various companies responsible for insuring that no immigrant passengers arrived in the United States in excess of the quota allowed. Webb, the American soldier who has won sudden fame in Paris art circles by his distinctive etchings, was content to pass his prints out among his friends. One day, however, while he was having his etching printed by the old-fashioned process called "taille douce," the printer said: "Why don't you sell these etchings?" "They're not good enough," replied Webb. "You're crazy," said the printer; The viands were supposed to be "properties"; that is, the actors were to peck at them as though eating but not to consume them as the scenes had to be photographed over and over again. But the two hundred players were hungry and the food was avidly eaten. When Tom Terriss, the director, was ready to photograph the action, after having rehearsed it half a dozen times he found the food was gone. He had to recall the waiters, order new "props," and then begged his cast not to consume them as a luncheon was prepared for them in an adjoining room. It required great resistance to spare the French cantaloupes, casaba melons and other delectable dishes set before them, but the actors and actresses did it this time. "Find the Woman," featuring Alma Rubens, will be presented at the California Theatre beginning tomorrow. Doty Hobart adapted the picture. In support of Miss Rubens are: Elleen Huban, George MacQaurrie, Harrison Ford, Ethel Durray, Norman Kerry, Henry Sedley and others. It is a Paramount picture. MILLER FUNERAL TODAY Funeral of Wm.
