REFINEMENTS MANY UPON NEW PACKARD
"All about the Packard single-six there are those little artistic touches that evidence the forethought of the designer for the enjoyment and convenience of the motorist, and endear it particularly to the woman who drives," says Charles Randall, manager of the local branch of Dale & Co., Packard distributors for Orange county.
"In the enclosed models, the pulitto handles of the doors are covered with upholstery cloth. When folded down they fit into recesses in the door surfaces. The head-lamps, of a distinctive Packard type, are heavily nickled and equipped with an outside focal adjustment. The rear compartment of the runabout is fitted with an inconspicuous but trustworthy lock, also an electric light for illuminating its interior.
"An improved cowl ventilator, instantly adjustable in three positions, assures a maximum of fresh air without objectionable drafts. Each of the doors of the enclosed models, excepting the right front door which locks from the outside, is equipped interiorily with an improved type of lock. Neatly designed pockets of the envelope type are provided on all doors with the exception of the left front.
"Outside handles on all types are an appreciated convenience—and a protection to gloves and cuffs—in inclement weather. In the open models, the robe rail is of tunular, one-piece construction, with para finish; in the enclosed carriages, a flexible cord of seamless woven fabric.
"All tops are neatly lined and rigidly supported. When the top of the runabout is lowered, it rests upon two rubber lugs that protect the intrinsic finish of the body. The dash embodies a new oval design and accommodates the instruments, including a clock, in a small, compact space. The windshields of the enclosed models are fitted with sun visors, adjustable to the driver's eye level. Laces and bindings have been omitted from the enclosed car interiors wherever possible, in favor of the smart, strictly tailored effect gained by welted seams and covert tacking."

McClaren Tire Has Record; 51,000 Miles
"Judging from the figures that we received at the Valencia Orange show, it is quite evident that few people realize the wonderful mileage that the McClaren tire is delivering to motorists," declares a representative of the Anaheim Tire Sales Co., local distributors.
"As an advertising feature at the Orange exposition we exhibited a much battered McClaren tire, giving a prize to anyone who would guess correctly or nearest correctly the mileage it had traveled. Hundreds of guesses were registered, and strange to say by far the majority of the calculators underestimated. They evidently gained their information from experience with other tires, which fall short of McClarens in point of service by several hundred miles."
This particular tire we exhibited has left the imprint of its tread on 51,000 miles of highway, traveling its first 4000 miles on the cars of the Sutherland Tia Juana Stage line. Later it was made part of the true equipment of one of the Liberty stages routed between Camp Kearny and San Diego delivered 27,000 miles additional, before it was necessary to have it retreaded. On the retread it ran 11,000 miles and on a second retread 9,000 miles.
Five people guessed correctly the mileage delivered by this time. In order to select th two lucky parties to receive the prizes two of the five names were drawn from a hat by a representative of the Auto Club of Co. Cal.
The first prize, a 30x3½ McClaren cord, was received by O. H. Renner; the second, a set of "Vacuum groove" piston rings, was awarded to T. R. Flivecoat.

OLD CIVILIZATION FEW HOURS DISTANT
From the modern civilization of today, with its radio telephones and telegraphs as matters of course in the homes, to the scene of possibly the most ancient civilization of California, is a rip of but a few hours, and is one of the many that lie open for the motorist who is to answer 'the call of the open road,' says J. E. Walter, Jordan, Cleveland and Chandler distributor, quoting the account of a recent trip by a Jordan car.
"A little canyon therein the Indians of an almost forgotten past, made their homes and left their heiroglyphics on the rocks was found by observers in a Jordan car, piloting the way along the San Joafo drive. In addition to the writings there are mortars made in solid granite rocks where the Indians ground their meal, and other signs of this one being the abode of the savages.
To reach this scene the motorist will go out East Center-st to Olive thence through the Santa Ana Canyon to Corona, thence to Perris and the Journey continued on the San Jacinto and Perris road to Hemet. The city is due north from there to San Joafo.
At the latter place the motorist may engage a guide who will direct him to Rinehard canyon, the scene of the Indian homes. The canyon is just west of Hemet, but the road is only to appearances, a washout, and is not marked. However, it is firm, made of decomposed granite, and same for the heaviest cars.
"Rinehard canyon is not marked on the maps and is not usually visited by tourists. For that reason it is the greatest attraction, as it will show where the Indians lived in primitive fashion, how they left their writings for others and how they prepared their grains for food. This canyon lies in the Lakeview mountains, of which Mt. Rudolph, 2629 feet high, is the highest peak.
For the return trip the motorist may proceed to San Jacinto again and then go northwest on the San Jacinto and Redlands road, turning off to go west through Moreno and March field. The latter is one of the greatest army aviation centers in the United States. The highway passes near the reservation, thus affording the tourists complete views of the buildings and harbors.
AJAX TIRE SPELLS MILEAGE, NON-SKID
Experienced automobile fans and professionals know the Ajax tire, but for the benefit of the novice and others who don't, James, the Vulcanizer, of North Los Angeles stdeer, offers the reminder that the Ajax is original equipment on the Bulck Chevrolet, Dodge, Oldsmobile and Oakland among other prominent makes of cars. It is reported that the Cadillac also has adopted the tire an original standard equipment.
Mileage and non-akid qualities will tell in the long run, says James, who has taken on the distribution of this and the Horse Shoes tire because he believes in them, and does not "believe" in them because he has taken over the distribution.
Nash Car Sales Break All Records; Nuf Sed
Nash Motors has passed the one-hundred thousand mark in point of passenger car units produced; in actual figures there have been built and sold, since its introduction four years ago. 104,245 Nash passenger automobiles.
In April, Nash Motors had the greatest single month's sale of passenger cars in the history of the company, completely overshadowing ten August 1920. Now comes May orders received up to the fifteenth omo. 31 per cent in excess of April January. February and May started the breaking of records with volume of sales that exceeded the one 1921 period by fifty-one percent.
"The reason for this country-wide demand or Nash passenger cars is plain," said C. B. Voorhis, Vice-President and Director of Sales of the Nash Motors Company. "It is due primarily, believe, to the excellence of the product and to the fixed policy of Nas distributors and dealers in the main of service. A good car backed by good service should have no difficulty whatever, over a period of time, winning the confidence of the buyer."
That is exactly the position of The Nash Motors company and its products are in touch. The buyer has confidence in its car itself and in those who stand atk of the car. That is why we have oversold all spring; that is when even greater gun jack kit extra disc wheel

INSPECT BATTERY OFTEN, IS ADVICE
"To insure uninterrupted enjoyment of your car this season it is advisable to have your starting and lighting system inspected by experts at frequent intervals," according to West Bronx Orange county distributors of Vesta storage batteries.
"Your battery," the firm points out, "is one of the most delicate parts of your car. Unless it is kept filled with distilled water and up to the proper charge there is danger that it will fail to respond when most needed."
"At any Vesta Service Station you will find experts ready to inspect and test your battery without charge. If repairs are necessary the Vesta service station is well-equipped to make them because in repairing any battery they can use the patented features which have made Vesta batteries famous for long wear.

194,750 FORD CARS ORDERED FOR JUNE
Ford dealers in the United States have asked for a total of 194,750 Ford cars, trucks and tractors to meet their June requirements, says a statement issued by the Ford Motor Company in Detroit.
As a result, the estimated output for June has been boosted to 140,000, which is an increase of 10,000 over May, and, of course, will set up a new high record, in spite of the fact that the May output will show a substantial increase over the previous highest month.
Ford sales have been constantly increasing since the first of the year, the demand growing during the past two months faster than it has been possible to increase production.
Monday, May 16, brought forth a new record of cars built for one day, the figures reaching 4,878 at the close of the day's work. This was an increase of 16 over May 13, when the previous high mark was established.
On May 18, the six millionth Ford motor was assembled. Number five million came off the line May 28, 1921.
Ford officials state that every attempt is being made to build a sufficient number of cars and trucks to fill the retail requirements of their 8,000 dalers.

CONFISCATE JEWELS
FOR FAMINE RELIEF
MOSCOW, June 3.—Ordinary citizens are excited and the authorities
are anxious regarding the enforcemenn of the recent order providing
confiscation of the Jewels and other
treasures of churches to raise money
for famine relief.
The greatest fear of the authorities is that the seizure of church
treasures will revive anti-Semitism,
resulting in slaughter of Jews. The
Russian masses are deeply religious
and are almost completely under the
influence of the priests, who are actively opposing the confiscation.
Communists charge that the priests
are fomenting racial enmity, blaming
the Jews for the seizure order.
RECORD-BREAKER
USED "S. O." GAS
Mrs. Kathleen Ayres is a great booster for gasoline service stations.
Mrs. Ayres is the woman who last week broke the San Francisco-Portland-record by piloting her four cylinder Buick Coupe between these cities in 22 hours and 43 minutes.
Her time cut down the best previous motor car record by three hours and eight minutes, and bested the Southern Pacific's crack train, "The Shasta," by five hours 47 minutes.
Mrs. Ayres, in describing her record-beating run, was particularly generous in her praise of the Standard Oil Company's service stations along the road. Stops were made at Corning and Roseburg for Red Crown and Zcolene, and the prompt attention given by the service station attendants cut many minutes off the running time. "And minutes are valuable little things, especially in establishing records," said Mrs. Ayres.
The Buick's record is official in every respect, as the coupe and its nervy little driver were checked out of San Francisco and in at Portland by members of the press in both cities, while the timing was done by officials of the Western Union Telegraph Company.
Mrs. Ayres is chairman of the reception committee of the California Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs for their convention to be held in San Francisco.

LONDON, June 3.—A Greek d'Annumzio is to be selected from high officers of the Hellenic army.
He will lead the thousands of Greek troops who are pledged to ignore any orders from their government to evacuate Thrace under the revision of the Sevice treaty, according to reports received in official quarters here.
Greek troops and war materials are being concentrated on the Adum-Karahissar-Eskishehr and other front and, according to authenticated reports both here and in Constantinople—and in Smyrna itself. The sole desire is to concentrate as many soldiers as possible in Asia Minor, regardless of the imminence of a Kemlaist attack this spring.
