GARDEN GROVE, June 2, (Spl.) Neva Pay Gerdes was hostess to seven little girls in honor of her seventh birthday anniversary yesterday afternoon, at the home of her aunt, Mrs. O. H. Anderson. The time was spent at various games, followed by delicious refreshments. Those present were: Dorothy Knapp, Juanita Dugan, Betty Newsom Ruth Fitz, Marjorie Eunis, Jean Edmunds and Lillian Munz. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Henry and Mr. and Mrs. James Henry of Santa Ana attended the wedding of the former's cousin, Mrs. Bess Baxter and J. W. Wall of Anaheim, in Los Angeles last evening. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Pollins, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Pollins, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Armstrong and little son, and Mrs. G. Root and Mrs. Fred Smith of Santa Ana enjoyed an outing near Yorba Linda Tuesday. Miss Jane Ross of Ocean Park Heights was a guest at the O. H. Anderson home over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Stillens motorized to Corona Sunday for a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Preston. Mrs. Preston is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stillens. Travis Anderson who is attending the California Institute of Technology was home over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Henry and Mrs. Margaret Gunther were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Henry in Santa Ana, Tuesday. Mrs. C. C. Violett and Ernest Kelsey left Monday morning by auto for Corwallis, Ore., where Mrs. Violett will attend the graduation of her son, Malcolm Wharton, at the State Agricultural College. She expects to return home the latter part of next week, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Ruth, and son Malcolm. Mrs. J. B. Vance of Long Beach is spending the week-end at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank McConnell. Mrs. Ira Devault of Alhambra is visiting at the J. N. DeVaul home east of town. The program opened with music by the orchestra, followed by several selections by a trio composed of students of the Chaffey high school. Prof. Merton S. Hill, a former Garden Grove boy and at one time principal of the Garden Grove grammar school, but at present principal of the Chaffey union high school gave a splendid address, taking as his subject the place of the modern high school. Dr. Hill of Long Beach, also a former Garden Grove boy gave a short talk in which he expressed greetings and congratulations to the high school students and faculty of Garden Grove. Light refreshments of punch and wafers were served. C. H. King's popcorn stand was entered sometime Monday night, presumably by boys who helped themselves to a quantity of pop, candies, etc. Entrance was gained by prying open the rear door. Miss Edythe McConnell and J. Everett Hale were united in marriage at $30 last evening at the M. E. parsonage, Rev W. M. Harkness officiating. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Pollins, and Mr. and Mrs. Gorman of Anaheim. The bride is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McConnell, of this place, and the groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hale. The young couple will go to housekeeping at once in their home on Fifth-st. Mr. and Mrs. Hale have a host of friends here who extend heartiest congratulations. Forest Hale had the misfortune to break his right arm one day last week, while practicing the pole vault at the school grounds. The Vacation Bible school begins June 19th. We urge all the parents to send their boys and girls from the age of four years and up. This is a wonderful opportunity. Do not miss it. Houser of Fullerton gave a most interesting and helpful talk. Short talks were also given by several members of the Bible class. The Baptist male quartet rendered a number of selections. About one hundred men attended the meeting. First National Builds Cage for Escrow Dept. Workmen are engaged in the construction of a separate cage for the escrow department of the First National bank. The cage will be located at the northwest corner of the banking room. While it will be built largely of marble, ns are the other departments of the institution, the idea will be to make it distinctive in design as well as separate from the other cages. The growth of the bank demanded that the present escrow department be taken over by the other departments. HAWKEYES PICNIC SATURDAY, JUNE 17 The annual picnic of the Orange-Co. Iowa Asn. will be held at Birch par, Santa Ana, Saturday, June 17. Coffee will be furnished free but plenickers will be expected to bring well-filled lunch baskets. Ignition Works of Santa Ana, was accidentally shot in the calf of the leg while hunting rabbits at San Juan Capistrano. Mr. Ross Johnson suffered an injury to his knee on Wednesday while at work in the oil wells. It is not known yet if there is a fracture or not but at any rate he will be confined to his home for several days. The press chairman of the Y. L. Woman's club has made the following report. On Monday evening, May 29th the Y. L. W.C. held its formal club house opening to the many friends of its members. The receiving line composed of next years executive board, met the guests in the reception room. There was no music, but most enjoyable music was furnished for entertainment and dancing by Mrs. Magie Cochran and Mr. Harry Kendircks. Light refreshments were served and a general good time was enjoyed. The guests expressed themselves as delighted with the home club house. Woman's club has made the following report. On Monday evening, May 23rd the Y. L. W. C. held its formal club house opening to the many friends of its members. The receiving line composed of next years executive board, met the guests in the reception room. There was no music, but most enjoyable music was furnished for entertainment and dancing by Mrs. Magie Cochran and Mr. Harry Kendircka. Light refreshments were served and a general good time was enjoyed. The guests expressed themselves as delighted with the homey club house. Mrs. Bascon and daughter, Bernice, Mrs. Mary Gale and Miss Olive and Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth formed a part that spent Tuesday at Balboa. A Mr. Baker of Los Angeles who stopped yesterday at the local water pumping plant on business, had the misfortune of having his seven passenger Paige car catch on fire while he was in the office. It is thought defective wiring caused the blaze which was extinguished before the machine was a total loss, although the upholstery and finish were completely ruined. Mrs. Nuffer of Norwalk, who as Irene Owen was formerly a teacher here, was visiting friends in town on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jepson and Miss Mildred, and Mr. Ernest Jepson spent Sunday with relatives at Elsinore. A jolly crowd of 21 young people enjoyed a weiner bake in Santa Ana canyon on Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Sparks and family of Rose-dr spent the last week and over the holiday with friends. On Tuesday they returned home, stopping at Los Angeles for Mrs. Sparks Sr., who will visit her a short time. Mrs. Gladys Conley Taylor underwent a major operation at the Anaheim hospital on Tuesday morning. Latest reports were to the effect that one was getting along as well as could be expected considering the seriousness of the operation. Friends from Whittier called at the H. R.
