Monday, May 22, 1922 Norma Talmadge, whose latest production for First National release, "Smilin' Through," is having a tremendously popular run at the California Theatre this week, was recently asked why she has deserted New York to make motion pictures in California. "My sister Constance and I prefer New York to any city in the world as a place to live in," she said, "but we are wrapped up in our work and are anxious to make bigger and better productions in 1922 than we have ever made before, and for the picture industry California is the ideal place to work in. I started 'Smilin' Through,' my latest picture, in New York and finished it in California. And I think that without a doubt it is the finest. I have ever appeared in. I hope to make more like now that I am located on the coast." "Practically all motion pictures of magnitude have been made in California—notice I do not say all pictures of merit, but all pictures of magnitude." "Producers came out to the coast, at first, because they thought we had to have natural light. We have since found out that we can make the pictures better by artificial light, but the producers who came here remained here, and that means that actors can readily be obtained for any play without delay, that properties are to be had at a moment's notice, that, in short, a whole community has grown up which devotes itself entirely to filling the needs of picture producers at a moment's notice. Then, too, California has tremendous advantages over Florida or New York because of the variety of its scenery. In Florida you suddenly need a mountain and you can't find one, but out here, lakes, hills, deserts, or jungles, grow over night under the skilled hands of our technical directors. We cannot afford in New York—even if we could obtain them—to rent fifty or sixty acres for 'sets.' For best results for big exterior there is no CASEY, THE COP SNO USE-TALKIN' THIS RADIO STUFF IS A MIRACLE!! WHAT'S A MIRACLE??? La Habra Items LA HABRA, May 22. The afternoon was spent in work for community has grown up which devotes itself entirely to filling the needs of picture producers at a moment's notice. Then, too, California has tremendous advantages over Florida or New York because of the variety of its scenery. In Florida you suddenly need a mountain and you can't find one, but out here, lakes, hills, deserts, or jungles, grow over night under the skilled hands of our technical directors. We cannot afford in New York—even if we could obtain them—or rent fifty or sixty acres for 'sets.' For best results for big exteriors there is no place like Los Angeles, and with the industry firmly established here the climatic advantages and variety of scenery, California will remain the capital of the industry."
