HELP AUTO CLUB RECOVER MACHINES Rules for the conduct of motorists in connection with the general welfare of touring through So. Cal, have been prepared by the touring bureau of the Auto club of So. Cal. According to the Auto club, each owner of an automobile in this section of the state has some responsibility in regard to the safety and well-being of the entire motoring public. Here is what you can do, Mr. Motorist, to make things more pleasant for yourself and neighbor in So. Cal. 1. Report all suspicious appearing cars left in your neighborhood for any length of time. It may be stolen property. 2. Lock your own car when parking it anywhere. 3. Advise your eastern friends to secure "guest" tags from the Auto club office. It means courteous treatment for them. 4. Do not come to a sudden stop on inter-city boulevards without giving proper hand signal. 5. Forbid your children to play in the streets or highways at any time. 6. Remember that accidents cost Los Angeles $19,876,000 last year and be careful when driving. 7. If your eastern visitor is in doubt where to spend his motoring vacation, advise him to call for help at the Auto club. 8. During school vacations do not give strange children rides to the beaches in your car. It encourages funaways and may cost you damages. V. G. LOLY JOINS WITMAN'S JEWELRY Alex H. PAIGE FACTORIES' PRODUCTION BROKEN "During April 1922 the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company broke its every existing record for production for shipments and for sales," says H. M. Jewett, president of the company. "In March we came close to the biggest month we ever had. In April we went far beyond that mark, beating March by 50 per cent. During April we built and shipped 2700 cars. On one day towards the close of the month we shipped 252 cars." Our production scheduled for May has been pushed to the limit of our facilities, for we already have on our books bona fide orders for more than 6000 cars. It is now possible to forecast well into the summer and it is now apparent that 1922 will be the biggest year Paige has ever known." Sam Hubbell is local distributor. PAIGE AT COTATI SMASHES RECORDS The Paige 6-68 Daytona Model established a new world's stock chassis record for 25 miles on the Cotati California track Sunday, May 7th, when it covered the distance in 15 minutes and 27 95-100 seconds, traveling at the terrific speed of 96.98 miles an hour plus. The most interesting and significant feature of this remarkable performance is the fact that in order to establish a new world's mark for 25 miles the Paige had to shatter records made by itself about one year ago on the Uniontown, Pa., track. At that time it broke all world's stock chassis speedway records from 5 to 100 miles. These records remained untouched and even unchallenged until the trage tackled them on the California track. The previous world's record for 25 miles set by the Paige itself, was 16:37.94 or 90.1 miles an hour, so that the performance in California shows a marked improvement over a figure that no other car was able to lower or even equal in a year's time. Piloted by Earl Cooper and clocked by Fred Wagner, official timer for the A. A. A., the record breaking performance of the Paige at Cotati It would be hard to find a more beautiful 100-mile motoring trip than that from Anaheim onto the Ventura mountains. Every mile of the road is covered with springtime beauty and the fields and hills are abloom with wild flowers. After leaving Los Angeles, either the state highway by way of Calabasas of the county roads over the Chatsworth grade via Simi and Satico are good routes for one direction. It is just a trice more than 70 miles to Ventura by either route with a slight difference in favor of the Calabasas road. Twenty miles above Ventura one gets into the resort country where rushing streams, hills covered with wilde lilies and lupines hold forth alluring charms for the city jewellers. Pools of Trout Matillja Hot Springs is directly alongside the Ventura river where it cascades down the canyon and trout pools are found every few yards. Lyons Springs is but a mile and a half above Matillja and reached over a road that has just been put in excellent condition. Wheeler's lies on a branch of the Venturaily reached. That message is that the successful handling of traffic absolutely depends on unselfish individual cooperation from driver and pedestrian alike. "There are certain fundamental problems that the traffic force and the city council can handle. Such as proper street car routing and parking, but if the useless, unnecessary accidents are to be eliminated Nnot to speak of the terrible loss of life—every person has got to learn certain things—and do them. "Handling this situation is a lot like telling a child a long list of 'don'ts'. Either the child will, immediately, out of curiosity, go and do them, or will tell you very earnestly that he is not that kind of a child." "The fact remains that each year traffic is growing. We are going to have greater automobile transportation instead of less. In my experience I have found that I have gotten the best results in handling traffic when I have studied human nature, or, in fact, studied my own reactions when I am driving and when I am walking. "As a driver I have had to continually preach to myself that I am not the only driver in the street. As careful as I might be, I have got to watch the 'other fellow.' The same thing holds true when I am walking. Don't have anything on your mind but your position as a pedestrian, and you are not apt to disobey the traffic signals or walk around town with your head down. "The trouble today is that there is entirely too much selfishness on both sides of the fence. The automobile driver damns the pedestrian, and the pedestrian damns the driver. It isn't a question of who is right or who is wrong. The vital point is that when you are driver you have certain things to do. And when you are on foot you have an important job to perform—it isn't damning somebody—but helping the other fellow to make traffic as easy to handle as possible. "Here are some things every pedestrian should do when he is downtown: "The best way to become a good automobile driver is to first learn to be a good walker. "Cross the streets with your senses alert. Be calm. Don't swamp your mind suddenly when you think you are in a 'pocket.'" "Never try to say time by crossing the street in the middle of the block. Automobiles have the rightt of way between cops. "Go with the traffic signals when you walk. Think twice before you try to dodge across the street while traffic is going the wrong way. "Stand absolutely still on the curb. Think what it is you want to do—then do it confidently, as long as you are within the traffic rules. "Don't walk across the street with your head down. Always look in the direction which traffic is coming from. Don't try to look both ways. "When you are driving downtown, it is less expensive and dangerous to be considerate than it is to be 'smart.' Be a good judge of instances and speed. Learn this by practice. Make driving a science. "Don't drive downtown until you have learned to drive. "Dogs and children are not responsible. "Never try to go faster than the majority of traffic is going. If a driver is trying to cross the street, let him do it. Don't be a 'hog' because you think you have the right of way. Practice this one point, because the next time you may be the fellow who is trying to cross the street. Road courtesy can't be gotten through ordinances. ""Keep your shirt on""—if the other fellow tries a smart driving trick, let him pass with a smile. If he is a menace to safety, take his number. "Use the Golden Rule in driving or walking. It pays." Don't have anything on your mind but your position as a pedestrian, and you are not apt to disobey the traffic signals or walk around town with your head down. Use the Golden Rule in driving or walking. It pays." Good Dirt Roads It was found that what little dirt road had to be traveled was in fair shape, and that a road crew was working and planned to have the entire section of dirt road repaired within 10 days. The return trip from Nordhoff, in the beautiful Ojai valley, was made by way of Sulphur Mountain Springs another very delightful outing apor. From this fast place the road was followed down the Santa Paula creek, where a new grace is being built and paved, directly into Santa Paula. From Santa Paula the Studebaker was driven through Fillmore and Saugus, completing a 200-mile trip, with many stops, in less than 12 hours. And it is not strange that a car such as this should actually be a factor in business growth. It keeps up appearances. It keeps down costs. The shrewd merchant knows the vast importance of appearance in business. He knows that half of his merchandising problem lies in the impression he creates in the public mind. A COMPARISON of the Buick sales for the first three months of 1921 shows California have increased 69% this year. Without a doubt the 1922 Buick is the stupendous increase is shown in face of the consecutive days during this time was the make immediate deliveries on all models during the month just past this company, of their entire line of twelve models. Again we say, "Buy Your Buick for the 1922 Buick offer." And it is not strange that a car such as this should actually be a factor in business growth. It keeps up appearances. It keeps down costs. The shrewd merchant knows the vast importance of appearance in business. He knows that half of his merchandising problem lies in the impression he creates in the public mind. The impression made by a neatly lettered Dodge Brothers Business Car is always favorable. No matter how large the concern, its prestige is always emphasized by the car's appearance on the streets. Coupled with this is the worldwide reputation of all Dodge Brothers motor vehicles for economy and reliability. The Business Car is doing its full share to maintain and even strengthen this reputation. The operating cost is decidedly low. The word of any of the merchants represented among the photographs and statements on the following pages is indisputable. It is their knowledge of the car's value, and not our belief, that we wish to impress on you. What they say is no more than you would say if you were to put a Dodge Brothers Business Car to work for you. PREVENTE BRAIN FAG Our glasses mean clear sight—a clear brain.
