LONG BEACH WEST SIDE BEST FIELD With Oil Operators In spite of the fact that the water has not been shut off in the Cal-Mex's Kirkpatrick No. 1 the well has made a showing sufficient to justify the absolute assurance that the extreme west side of the Long Beach field is to become the best part of this already new and great field. Drilling out the cement at 2970—61¼ and bailing down the Cal-Mex showed considerable water. With all this water in the hole a quantity of light oil came up thru and made a display good enough for the most conservative oil man to predict a 1000 barrel well. The well has been re-cemented and in ten days the Long Beach field will have a real thriller. Much credit is due Vern Dumas for his untiring efforts in putting the Cal-Mex Oil and Refining Company where it is today. There is probably no one company or any one man that is so deserving of success than the Cal-Mex Oil and Refining Company and Mr. Vern Duams. The General Petroleum now has the honor of possessing Signal Hill's greatest oil producer. Signal No. 1 completed a couple of weeks ago at 3063 feet started off at 2800 barrels. The production has gradually increased until now it is up to 3245 barrels. The oil is running 26.5 gravity and equals the high gravity record for the Hill recently made by the Henderson Petroleum Company's Ella No. 1. One of the most important oil deals since the Long Beach field opened was the deal made last week by W. M. Keck with the Sandburg Petroleum Co. W. M. Keck, now recognized as one of California's greatest oil men, has taken over the Sandburg Petroleum leases and will develop them on a 60-40 basis. Keck will redrill and deepen No. 1 and drill three additional wells. The new organization will be known as the Keck-Sandburg. The deal involves a $100,000 bonus. Keck starts work on the holdings at once. The deal is of tremendous importance to the Sandburg Petroleum Co., in that it sees its holdings. 29 NEW WELLS STARTED Oil field operations reported the week ending May 13, show 29 new wells started, compared with 28 previous week. The total this year is 484, compared with 563 the same date last year. Tests for water shut-off 43, compared with 38 previous week. Yearly total to date 572; total to same date last year 564. Deepening or redrilling jobs 18, the same number as preceding week. Total to date this year 305; total to same date last year 308. Abandonments 6 compared with 8 preceding week. Total to date this year 123; total to same date last year 90. AGED TREE IN BLOSSOM VANCOUVER, Wash., May 17. — Blossoms again appeared on one of the oldest apple trees in the world today. The tree, located in the barracks here, is 96 years old and bears much fruit. GET 12 BUDDHIST BOOKS SAN FRANCISCO, May 19. — The Univ. of Calif. soon will receive 12 volumes of Buddhist scriptures from the royal house of Slam, given by the late Prince Vajiriyana Varóros. NEED MORE STRESS IN WALNUT Unless faster progress is taken under the farm bureau and horticulture missioners in Southern counties cannot be done year. This is the opinion Kitchen who, assisted statisticians, has been walnut industry statistics county for two weeks, completed the work in no district and is weaker than the work at Irvine, butress is hoped for. According to Mr. Kluck less delay is caused by some ranchers who have not know what the walnut industry amounts to. The deal is of tremendous importance to the Sandburg Petroleum Co. in that it sees its holdings pass into the hands of one of the most skilled and successful operators in the state. Keck will put the Sandburg Petroleum Company on a dividend paying basis in ninety days. The Petroleum Midway Company, Lad. is running close for first honors for big well production at Long Beach. Petroleum Midway McDavid is producing 2985 bbls daily and is proving one of the most consistent producers in the field. Field's No. 1 the Petroleum Midway's western front well has spudded in and some interesting developments are expected from this well soon. The P. M.'s Brown No. 1 will be the company's next big producer. At 3625 the well threatened to blow out and come in, but was mudded off and will drill further into the oil sands. The Shell Co.'s Bixby sprung a little surprise by coming in a water well, salt water at that, when the cement was drilled out at 4157. The well made 960 barrels of water and about 50 barrels of oil. The well will be re-cemented and further work done on it. This showing is just an incident in the oil frame and the Shell Company is not discouraged in the least. Preparations are being made to redrill and deepen the discovery well Alamitos No. 1 It is conceded now that a couple hundred feet more of hole will make a big well out of the well that started all the excitement on Signal Hill. Alamitos 1 was originally put on production at 3114 and made as high as 600 barrels for a number of months and then slowly declined. The National Petroleum Consolidated the holding company that recently took over the Crest and Crest Consolidated Oil Cos. will redrill and deepen both the wells. Located near the Shell's discovery well there is every reason to believe the deepening of these wells will result in big producers. The Rodgers Oil Well is another well on the south side of the field that has failed to hold up to original production and will be redrilled and deepened. Rodgers No. 1 completed at 3115 started off at 350 barrels but quickly declined to less than half that amount. The Henderson Petroleum Company acting as trustee for the Rodgers Oil Well Consolidated Oil Co., will repair and deepen both the wells. PROBE VALENTINO WEDDING LOS ANGELES, May 19.—Thomas Lee Woolwine, district attorney, and his deputy, Tom McClelland, have left for Mexico, to pursue their investigation of the marriage there of Rodolph Valentino to Winifred Shaughnessy, known as Natacha Rambova on the stage and also as Winifred Hudnut, foster daughter of Richard Hudnut, well known manufacturer of perfumery of New York. Valentino's divorce from Jean Acker was not complete and he may be liable to bigamy charges. His guilt depends upon what his intent was in going to Mexico. The girl has reached Salt Lake City, her native town. A WOMAN'S BACK The Advice of This Anaheim Woman Is of Certain Value Many a woman's back has manyaches and pains. NEED MORE SPEED IN WALNUT CENSUS Unless faster progress can be made the walnut industry census now being taken under the direction of farm bureaus and horticultural commissioners in Southern California counties cannot be completed this year. This is the opinion of H. M. Kitchen who, assisted by a corps of statisticians, has been tabulating walnut industry statistics in Orange county for two weeks. The crew has completed the work in the Capistrano district and is well along with the work at Irvine, but faster progress is hoped for. According to Mr. Kitchen more or less delay is caused by the fact that some ranchers have only a part of their land planted to walnuts do not know what the walnut acreage really amounts to. "Our undertaking would move along with greater speed if every walnut grower would cooperate with us to the extent of checking up his acreage at once and having the figures ready when we call at his ranch," said Mr. Kitchen. "It would save us much time if each grower could tell us offhand just how many acres of walnuts he cultivates and name the percentage of Buds and Soft Shells." Among the questions we are including in the walnut census are the following: Name and address of the owner. Does owner operate ranch. Name and address of foreman. Location of grove. Member or non-member or Association. To whom does he sell Number of acres. Number of trees. Distance apart. Age. Kind of interplanting, if any. Number of pounds of good nuts and culls grown in 1918, 1919, 1920, and 1921. Is grove irrigated. Cost of system, including pumps, pipe, motors, gas or electric. Cost of water rights per acre each year. Is a tractor used. Number of horses. Is auto used. What make and model. Name all farm implements used. Has ranch a drying shed, trays and graders. It so, give cost of each. Is cost record kept. How often is grove sprayed or dusted. What material is used. Mr. Kitchen says if Orange county walnut growers will work out the answers to these questions at once and hand them to the statistician when he calls it will be a real service to the industry. The walnut census is being taken to obtain absolutely authentic information covering the industry through the state. This, it is believed, SPEAKERS THRILL RILEY 'STUDE' CLUB Rev. Tom Walker addressed the Riley Studebaker club last night on the propelling power and the belief in life and your job. This was a very interesting and instructive address and all who heard him agree that they got a message from his discourse. Dr. Harris Newkirk gave a very interesting talk on service, and judging from the members present he sure put it over. Dr. Newkirk is one of Anaheim's most popular speakers as well as a physician. It was decided to have the annual picnic in June and the date decided upon was the 17th and 18th. There will also be a Studebaker owners' picnic and barbecue in July. All committees reported progress in their work and have many surprises ahead. The valley ball team is getting into shape for action. Mr. Ed. Campbell is in charge of the music. J. C. S. GARRICK. will be of great value in handling such matter as tariff campaigns, and other matters which call for detailed information.
