NEW S. E-PORTLAND RECORD IS LAUDED William Goodrum, head of the local Buick agency, the Anaheim Auto Company, has just received details from Los Angeles of the new record of Mrs. Z. Kathleen Ayers of San Francisco, between San Francisco and Portland. The trip, regarded by experts as one of the most thrilling and exciting ever made between the two cities, was made in a 1922 Buick Four Coupe. Mrs. Ayers sat behind the wheel and drove the Buick for the greater portion of the 725 miles only occasionally relieved by the official representative of the Howard Automobile Company, detailed to acca as her escort. Goodrum reports the trip official in every respect, as the Buick Coupe and its fair driver were checked out of Frisco at one p.m., on Monday, and checked in at Portland at 11:45 a.m. the following morning (Tuesday). Checking at both pieces war done by members of the local press, while timing was done by officials or the Western Union Telegraph Co. Total time necessary for the dash, including the 35 minutes necessary to cross Frisco Bay to Oakland was 22 hours, 13 minutes. This set a new mark for the trip, as far as Western Union records show, beating the best previous time made by automobile 3 hours and 8 minutes. The former records show 25 hours 51 minutes as the best time established. The fastest schedule of the Southern Pacific Company's Express train is 28 hours 30 minutes. The four-cylinder Buick now holds time mark over rail as well as highway competitors. Mrs. Ayers paid high tribute to the four-cylinder car she drove. She said: "My four-cylinder Buick never gave me a particle of apprehension. Not a single stop had to be made for mechanical adjustments of any kind, and it was the sort of trip when would be a severe test for any automobile, irrespective of price or size or engine. Inasmuch as I have had considerable experience in driving many different makes of cars during my war work in the Woman's Red Cross Motor Corps, I feel that I am posted well enough to judge the merits of an automobile." The manner in which this four-cylinder-TORON sign biggest on earth HYDRO-TORAN sign The Hydro-United Tire Co., represented in Anaheim by the Nu-way Tire Co., have constructed what is believed to be the largest sign in the world. The sign is built of whitened rock against a hill along the Pacific highway just outside of Roseville on the road leading to Lake Tahoe. It reads: "Hydro-Toron Tires." The sign is 1000 feet long, with litters 20 feet high and 12 feet in width. Some idea of the amount of tint and labor used in constructing this sign may be obtained from the fact that in the letter "B" there are approximately three tons of rock. The sign is seen by thousands of motorists passing along the Pacific highway and is creating a great deal of comment, as also the tire which is worthy of the sign. These problems would be discussed by the commission: Russia's needs all the basis for credit to her sources of loans to Russia, a method by which the commission would control Russia during economic and industrial reconstruction; no separate treaties with Russia for economic or political purposes. "PENITENCE SWINDLER ANCHESTER, Eng., May 13.—For several years William Robertson swindled Salvation Army officers by borrowing money after pretending penitence. He was finally caught and must serve a year in prison. Radio Service Free at Anaheim Station "Radio service," said Manager Ennis, of the local Exide Service Station, "requires a battery with a dependable voltage; that is, a battery whose voltage, after a few minutes' use, will not drop to a point where it becomes necessary to make frequent adjustments of the apparatus. "There is only one way to be assured of this, and that is, to buy only new batteries and only those made by a firm, with a reputation for making dependable batteries." "Also, it is very desirable and really important to buy a battery that has behind it a service organization which will help the radio fan prolong the life of his battery." "Much depends on the proper care of a storage battery, as many motorists who use them in their cars wilt testify. This doesn't mean that storage batteries are hard to cure for, but on the contrary, the rules are few and simple, that many people fail to be impressed by the importance of rigidity following them. In this, the proper service organization can help by teaching the radio man how to take care of his battery." "Then a lot of radio sensors don't know what kind of a battery to be as such terms as 'voltage' and 'amperes hours' are bewildering. We are answering questions every day at our service station and we are glad to tell any radio enthusiast or prospective owner of a set, all we know about batteries. I had been sick for eight months with a trouble which confined me to my bed and was only able to be up part of the time, when I was advised by a friend, Mrs. Smith, to try Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and Liver Pills. I was so much benefited by the use of these medicines that I was able to be up and about in two weeks. I was at the Change of Life when I began taking the medicines and I passed over that time without any trouble. Durant "Four" On Endurance Run Driving a stock model Durant "Four" touring car, fully equipped and carrying fenders, windshield and top, Bill Reichel and Loe Longfeather, of the Durant Motor Co., of Calif., are making a novel endurance run. The car is being driven up and down California, piling up mileage and proving the efficiency, economy, and durability of the product of the famous motor car builder, W. C. Durant. An acerate record is being kept covering the gasoline, oil and tire mileage. The one object of the run is to build up a great mileage total. The drivers alternate at the wheel and the car is kept constantly on the move, with exception of brief stops at each Durant dealer's establishment en route. The run was started from the Earle C. Anthony, Inc. headquarters at Oakland, and the first leg of the run was down the Coast Route to Los Angeles. The return trip was from the Los Angeles house of the Anthony organization to Oakland over the Valley Route. Reichel and Longfeather then turned about and drove back to Los Angeles over the Valley Road by way of the scenic Ridge Route and Leebee, returning north by the way of the coast Route to San Francisco. Again the car was turned about and driven back over the Coast Route to Los Angeles. This program is to be followed, day after day, until the mileage piles up to a point far in excess of the present record. At the end of the first 1535 miles, the Durant "Four" had averaged 21.8 miles to the gallon of gasoline and the oil mileage was reported at better than 1535 miles to the gallon. There were no repairs or mechanical adjustments made. GET TRACTOR THAT WORKS ALL TIME Get a tractor which ploughs ground all the time, if it is doing ploughing, hays H. S. Gelnelie of J. J. DeVaux. And not a single comeback has yet been received for defects. The distributors point out that the 10,000-mile guarantee on the cords and 6,000-miles guarantee on the fabrics represent only a fraction of the actual mileage which may be expected. It is the minimum, not the maximum. Prices are considerably less, also, than other makes of tire; the company taking this means of introducing the tire more widely. A special price is offered from $1.50 less on the 30 by 3½ to $11.55 less on the 37 by 5 size. Jack Holt and Agnes Ayers are seen today at the California in "Bought and Paid For," the picture you have been waiting to see. ICELAND WARMER THAN ENGLAND, SAYS PREMIER REIKJAVIK, Iceland, May 13—"It is much warmer in Iceland than in England," declared M. John Magnusson, the Premier of Iceland, upon his return from a visit to London. His wife corroborated the Premier's statement and said she would glad to get back where she would be "comfortable again." BETROTHED IN CELL LOS ANGELES, May 13—Miss Ynez Gay, sweetheart of C. Leigh Fulkerson, confessed embezzler of $20,000 from the Heilman Commercial Trust and Savings Bank, accepted his proposal of marriage on a visit to his cell in the city jail. The marriage will take place when he has served his sentence. Rubber Factories Are Busier; Prospects Good A. P. Osterloh, vice president and general manager of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of California, has just received from Akron, Ohio, an indication of the process that is being made in the capital city of the tire world in the form of reports of an address delivered there by P. W. Litchfield, factory manager of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Inc., of Akron, before the East Akron Board of Trade. Litchfield declared that, "Business is on the way upward. The rubber business was one of the first to suffer and is now the first to recover.轮胎 manufacturing, which is approximately 75 per cent of the rubber business, is on a sound fundamental basis." In the spring of 1920 the monthly average at Goodyear was 250 per cent of the 1914 wage, with the cost of living 215 per cent of the 1914 cost of living. Today the purchasing power of the average employee is approximately 30 per cent greater than in 1914, and approximately 29 per cent greater than in any year since 1914 except 1921. Taxis fact spell prosperity for prospective business in general. "We have merely scratched the surface of the tire business for large passenger buses and freight transportation trucks. Even during the recent depression, the increase in use of big buses has been really surprising. "As I see the city of the future, the very near future, it is going to be a city of smooth paved streets without rails or wires. Transportation can be furnished more quickly as cities expand. Just as soon as business is there, the new form of transportation is going to be there too. Modern cities will be quick to take advantage of that new and better, as well as cheaper form of transportation." "A year ago was a time for extreme co-operation, and that is equally true today, but the rewards is apparent. The rubber industry is going ahead or these lines, and GET TRACTOR THAT WORKS ALL TIME Get a tractor which ploughs ground all the time, if it is doing ploughing, hays H. S. Gelnette of J. J. DeVaux. Pageol distributor. Don't waste your gasoline, oil and repairs if the ground isn't ploughed. Next to the efficient traction, which prevents slipping, the important feature of the Pageol is the grouser wheels. Gelnette explained. On account of the wedging action of the ground between two adjacent grouserers, the drive wheels do not sink deeply even in loose sand. Neither do they tend to dig in—on the contrary, they have a positive tendency to dig out, due to the fact that each grouser "steps" out on fresh ground while the withdrawing grouser pulls out of the soil without lifting it, so that the tractor continually "walks" out of its own tracks. Unlike a created wheel the construction of the Pageol grouser wheel is such that it can be automatically kept clean. This method of traction has an advantage in plowing, for under ordinary conditions one wheel walks in the furrow, breaking up the plow pan. After the seed bed is prepared it is not damaged because the Pageol tractor does not pack the soil. PACKARD SALES UP TO $6,500,000 MONTH As an indication of the activity now prevailing in the motor car industry, Packard Motor Car Company's sales for April were in excess of $6,500,000, or more than half the company's total business for the first six months of its fiscal year beginning September last. Although sales of twin-sixes and trucks showed marked improvement, the greatest activity centered about the company's new single-six model. Sales of single-sixes during April were in excess of 2200 cars, most of these being the new model, which was first shown April 20. Four days after this car was announced, its sales at retail amounted to over 3,500,000. According to President Alvan Macauley, the purchasing power of the public for automobiles is much greater than was generally believed a few months ago, Says Macauley. "A survey of the conditions now prevailing among automobile manufacturers in Detroit and elsewhere, indicates that the title of business is much stronger than any one anticapped. Some of the factories, in spite of largely increased working forces, will experience difficulty in producing enough cars to fill the orders now coming in. This is true of the Packard Company." Jackson prefers to succeed himself, but Andrew Cock has been distributing cards announcing his candidacy and City Marshal Sam Jerigan of Santa Ana and Motorcycle Officer O. K.
