Tuesday, May 9, 1922 RUSSIA 'PASSES THE BUCK' TO FRANCE GENOA, May 9—The Russians today shifted to France the responsibility of bringing an end to the economic conference. In plain American, the soviet delegation "passed the buck." When it had been unanimously agreed that everything hinged on the Russian reply to the allies' note the soviet delegation announced it had postponed completion of its reply—until it is informed just where France stands. Lloyd George alone, of all the leading delegates, today professed certainty that the conference would reach a successful conclusion. La Habra Items LA HABRA, May 9.—(Spl.) Serving a four-course chicken dinner to their husbands was the entertainment offered three mere males when the Monday Afternoon club held open house at the school cafeteria Saturday evening. After dinner the kindergarten room was used for a series of games both amusing and otherwise, and a jolly good time was had by all. Mrs. Wolfe Mrs. Hole and Mrs. Walker as entertainment committee saw that there was not a doll moment. Mrs. F. E. Proud chairman of the dinner left nothing to be desired in that line. Mrs. Proud was assisted in serving by Mrs. L. H. Hart of Los Angeles, and the Misses Susan Walker, Beatrice Proud and Mary Wolfe. Those to enjoy this annual dinner of the club, were: Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Proud, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Tower, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Warne, Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Chandler, Mr. and Mrs. George Wolfe, Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Ansley, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Yorl, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hole, Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Drake, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Walker, Rev., and Mrs. C. A. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Taylor, Mrs. Anna Brookhauser, Mrs. M. F. Davis, and Mrs. Delphia Redfern. Among the new radiophone fans is Mrs. Calvin Co of Northampton, Mass., but now of Washington, D.C. their friends will repair to the school house and be the guests of Miss Irene Catland and the graduating class of the eighth grade. Miss Catland's pupils will entertain with a two course luncheon prepared by the domestic science class, and a short lecture will be given by the pupils in connection with tuition of the luncheon Wolfe, Mrs. W. They were accompanied by Dr. and Mrs. Charles Milliken of Whittier, Mr. Proud caught the limit, and also had the pleasure of trying out his new camp wagon. A. H. Johnson, C. M. Glazier, C. D. Lilley, and Grant Sherman, motored to big Bear Lake, the limit was also caught by these fishermen and to substantiate their story they brought back an eight pound trout. Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Ansley were the guests of their daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dernbaugh, at Chula Vista for several days of last week, Mrs. Dysinger, and children was dinner guests of Mrs. L. E. Plummer in Fullerton on Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kerchner were guests at a chicken dinner at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. C. A. Smith, on Saturday and Charles Stephens of Pasadena was a guest of his sister's husband, H. N. Launer for a few days last week. The ladies in charge were Mrs. C. A. Smith, and Mrs. S. Sorrenson. Accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Proud, Mrs. Delphia Redfern motored to Balboa Beach Sunday where the trio were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Aldrich, formerly La Habraans. Florence Rhodes Wilson, presented her advanced pupils, in a delightful piano recital, on Monday evening. Out of town numbers by friends of the pupils, was a solo dance by wee Helen Ware, vocal solo by Dan Huff, and a whistling solo by Ellis McMurrey. Pupils taking part were Arthur Norman, Avelynn Pellerin, Pauline Brewster of Huntington Beach, and Marguerite Zike of Whittier. The performance by these young people showed much close study and a proficient instructor and was listened to by an appreciative audience. Open sesame will be the watch word for the Woman's club Thursday afternoon. The business meeting will be held at the social hall at two o'clock, after which the members and Persian carpet designs have been handed down from remote ages. Riley Studebaker Agency met at the garage last night and organized a club, to be known as the Riley Studebaker Club. Among some of the things to be expected from the Riley Studebaker Club are: Indoor baseball team and a volleyball team. Officers were elected as follows: President, A. A. Ambrose; vice-president, Wm. HORSE PLAYS SANTA IN STORE CRASH LONDON, May 9.—A horse played Santa Claus to thousands of workers at a jeweler’s shop in Finsbury-pavement, one of London’s business streets at noon recently. The horse crashed through the plate-glass window. In extricating itself it dragged $20,000 worth of jewelry into the pavement. Little of the jewelry was recovered. NATIONAL BANK CALL Local state and national banks have been notified of a call for condition as of May 5 issued by the Comptroller of the Currency. There are four national and two state banks here. An improvement in aggregate condition is anticipated. PRINCE OF WALES SAILS FOR HOME KOGOSHIMA, Japan, May 9.—The prince of Wales sails today, homeward bound. He has seen in Japan four weeks, returning the state visit to England made last year by Hirochito, crown prince regent. Hirochito did not come to Kagoshima with his departing guest, but called the prince of Wales on the long-distance telephone from the imperial palace at Tokio. ROTARY INSTALLS OFFICERS MONDAY Installation of the officers-lect and announcement of committees occupied the Rotary Club at its lunchmeeting in the Elks’ clubhouse. The new officers are: Harry D. Fire, starting in the paper storage room in the basement, completely destroyed the building and equipment of the Des Moines Daily News. The fire started at 3 a.m. and gained rapid headway. Every fire apparatus in the city was called out and firemen fought the blaze for four hours before subduing the flames.
