MORE DEEP WELLS IN RICHFIELD DIST. The wonderful success of the Union Oil Company in the transformation of a small producer at Morse 3 into a 4300 barrel gusher has stimulated deep drilling in Richfield. The Standard Oil Company's Kellogg No. 2 now at 5200 continues to make hole in brown shale, the oil showings being of little importance. The Chan sler-Canfield Midway has three deep wells underway on the Bradford property. Two of these wells are close to 4500 feet and both are looking good. The Petroleum Midway has a deep test well drilling at Yarnell No. 9 that is destined to shed a lot of light on the field. The famous Richfield-Giant is another well that recently stopped drilling at 4200 feet that is to go on and search for the deeper sands. The Ridge Oil Company went to close to 4800 feet and found no production. Rather than see the men who backed the Ridge Oil Company with their dollars Vern Dumas the man who financed the Ridge has offered to let the company have a part of his Long Beach holdings on which a well can be drilled and the Ridge stockholders recoup their losses. The Bixby Hills section of the So. Calif. field has been left up to the Beatty Oil and Development Company for exploitation. The Beatty Oil Co., operating under the name of the National Security Company has a well drilling at 3645 with showings of little or no importance aside from the customary brown shale and gas. At one time the Long Beach Consolidated, the National Exploration Company, the California-New York and the Owners Oil Producing Company five concerns in all were drilling a well each. These five companies with the exception of the Owners Oil Producing have all retired from the field. TWO NATIONAL LANGUAGES ASUNCION, May 5—Paraguay, which is the smallest and most remote of the South American countries, is at the same time the only one that is the proud possessor of two national languages, both of which are official. One of them is Spanish and the other is Guaraní, or tongue of the partially civilized Indians who possessed the land before the arrival of the Spaniard. Guaraní is spoken everywhere, being heard on the streets as frequently as Spanish. The language is composed of short and snappy monosyllables. RAPS "PRUSSIAN METHODS" SAN FRANCISCO, May 5—It seems "a pity that Prussian methods have superseded more liberal ideals at the University", declared Witter Bynner, well known poet, who scores President David P. Barrows for "dropping" Professors Lyman and Anderson of the English department. INTERESTING TEST IN GASOLINE ECONOMY A. L. Witter yesterday made a gasoline test on a new Hupmobile owned by L. R. AT SANTA FE INCREASES TO 4600 With Oil Operators Santa Fe Springs started off early in the year with the biggest producer in So. Calif., and up to date continues to hold the record. The latest sensation of this new and wonderful field recently "dubbed" the Elk Hills of the South is the General Petroleum's Santa Fe 1. This well at 3971 started off at 300 and gradually increased its output until the marvel figure of 4600 was reached. Flowing under a pressure of 525 pounds and the oil coming thru an inch flow nipple the well bids fare to be one of the longest lived big wells in the southern field. G.P. officials say that Santa Fe No. 3 is higher up on the structure and will be a rival for the already famous No. 1. The Amalgamated Oil Co. is testing out the lay of the land on the Dallugge property by drilling No. 1 deeper and studying the core samples taken 25 to 30 feet below the production zone of Dallugge No. 1. As the A. O. Co. has a number of wells planned for this property a study of the field will come in good stead. Geo. F. Getty's Nordstram No. 1 drilling at 3400 is beginning to look like big production. This well has made remarkable good drilling time and has been also remarkably free from the usual mishaps attending the drilling of a deep well in hard formation. Fifty-five days was the actual time under-reamer in the hole delayed the work on the Standard Oil Co.'s Brownrig-Kellar now at 4700 feet. A rotary crew runs a little better than $100 a day, which means that it cost the Standard Oil Co. $6000 to recover a little piece of iron that would allow the drilling of the well to continue to completion. A report that the coming in of the big General Petroleum well had cut down the production of the Union Oil Co.'s Bell No. 1 is without foundation. The Bell well has not varied more than a dozen or so barrels daily for more than three months. This big well is producing its 320 barrels daily. The recent production test to which the Long Beach Consolidated subjected its well failed to get a well, and preparations are now being made. Placentia News PLACENTIA, May 5.—(Spl.) The Better Mothers' club was most delightfully entertained at the Heffern home on Thursday afternoon. Miss Anita Shepardson of the Fullerton union high school faculty was the speaker. At the close of the program delicious refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by her friends. A large number of representative club women of Orange-co were guests of the Placentia Round Table at an all day Reciprocity meeting at the club house on Wednesday. The hostess of the day, Miss E. K. Cuff, Mrs. A. Mann, Mrs. T. L. McFadden and Mrs. J. C. Thamer had made the club rooms beautiful by the profuse use of Gold of Ophir roses. Mrs Plerotti, first vice president of the Round Table, presided and gave an address of welcome in a most gracious and cordial manner. A letter of greeting from the president, Mrs Scott, was read. Community singing in which all joined heartily was led by Miss Ruth Howorton. Mr. Miller, county probation officer, gave the address of the morning and told of the problems which confronted him every day in regard to delinquent girls, in a manner that touched every woman's heart. The Ways and Means committee reported $74.79 had been cleared from the Spanish dinner last week and that this money would be applied on the club debt. The committee also announced a garden party which will be given on the afternoon of May 10th at the home of Mrs. Wleekett, for which an admission charge of 25c will be made and to which all friends of the club are invited. Miss Howerton, accompanied by Mrs. Adams sang three most delightful numbers—"I Hear You Calling Me," "By the Waters of Minnetonka" and "Sweet Miss Mary." The county president of the federation, Mrs. W.A. Moore of Fullerton gave a pleasing talk and spoke of her appreciation of the Round Table. At noon a bounteous luncheon was served at the Presbyterian church by the ladies of the Social Circle, after which the club convened again at the club house...Mrs. Percy Bradford, president of the Better Mothers' club, Little Mary Louise and Frances Merle Dellmar nieces of Mrs. Herbert Sullivan, delighted all by their dances, entitled "Baby Blue Eyes," "Johnnie Jump-Up," Fairy of Delight," "California" and "America." After the club adjourned many words of appreciation were spoken by the guests, of the delightful day spent with the Round Table. Avian Basten and Pete Zorn have returned from a week's stay in Victorville and Death Valley. They located several oil stratas. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tuffree and Mrs. E.C.Normandie are at home again after a most delightful trip to Honolulu. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Conger are the proud parents of an eight-pound baby daughter which arrived on May day. Mr. and Mrs.W.H.Prewitt are rejoicing over the arrival of a nine-pound son on April 30th. Mrs.Yude of Riverside is the house guest of Mr. and Mrs.Herbert Foss for a few days. The small daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Jess Perkins is suffering from a burn received a few days ago. Mr. and Mrs.H.C.Foss were suddenly summoned to San Jacinto to attend the funeral of Mr.Foss' sister's son, on Tuesday. CALIFORNIA It's the pennies that count. What does this mean to you? a little piece of iron that would allow the drilling of the well to continue to completion. A report that the coming in of the big General Petroleum well had cut down the production of the Union Oil Co.'s Bell No. 1 is without foundation. The Bell well has not varied more than a dozen or so barrels daily for more than three months. This big well is producing its 320 barrels daily. The recent production test to which the Long Beach Consolidated subjected its well failed to get a well, and preparations are now being made to redrill and deepen. The Long Beach Consolidated accomplished something what no other company has been able to do, that is to shut off water. Drilling resumes at 3495 with perfect hole free from water. Important developments are scheduled for the new Redondo field within the next week or ten days. The Chansler-Canfield has two wells showing oil in quantity, the Union's Francis flows about 40 barrels between the casing as drilling continues. The Standard Oil Company's Torrance Community is getting down to where it will bear a little close inspection before long. The Redondo field is practically all leased up by the Big Five and there is little or no chance for the stock company or the small oil company to operate. At Long Beach the General Petroleum has stepped into the oil lime light by bringing in the field's biggest producer up to date. Signal No. 1 completed at 3060 feet is flowing steadily at 2800 barrels, the oil being 26 gravity and as free from sand and water as any oil that ever came from old mother Earth. The Henderson Petroleum is credited with the second big well of the week at Long Beach. Steele (Ella) No. 1 drilled to 3095 this third producer for the Henderson Petroleum started off at a 1000 barrels gravity 26.5. The oil is the lightest gravity product the hill has yet produced. The Shell took third place by bringing in an 850 barrel well on the Patton-Wilson lease at 3200 feet. Pickler No. 1 landed a production string at 3145 and has all the outward appearances of a big well. The Shell's church No. 1 dropped down to 260 barrels and is to be redrilled and deepened. The Marine Oil Corporation's No. 1 recently brought in a 600 barrel well has dropped to 50 per cent of its initial production. The well is being placed on the pump in the hope that the rod agitation will bring up the output. The action of this well would seem to spell a short life for the large number of closely located wells on the top of Signal Hill. Wells are located so close together that one man could work derrick for three or four of the rigs at the same time. To date the Walker-Wester has had little or no success in loosening the liner and getting out the 6-inch oil string for re-cementing the well. This is the consensus of opinion among the newspaper critics in referring to the latest Betty Compson picture entitled "Green Temptation" now showing at the California theater. Miss Compson, who gained such great fame in "The Miracle Man" actually outdoes all former efforts in the superb production. From every standpoint, the photoplay is a marvel. Miss Compson is supported by a splendid cast of notables, and the theme of the picture is vivid and realistic. This picture will be at the California today and tomorrow only, and all those who anticipate seating this dandy play should hie to Anaheim's favorite cinema palace and enjoy a few hours real entertainment. The cooked food sale and bazaar by the Better Mothers' club will be held on Saturday in the new Stradley building. C. B. Keele and wife and family left Thursday for a trip north.
