ORIGINAL POEM TO HONOREE IS READ AT DINNER PARTY
MRS. ADDIE KING, of Diamond street, gave Mrs. Catherine Verbeck a surprise party yesterday in honor of her seventy-fourth birthday anniversary, a delightful feature of which was the noon dinner. The repast was spread on the dining table, fragrant with a centerpiece of roses in all colors, and prettily appointed. Two cakes graced the table, also, one of them pretitially iced and inscribed with the initials and dates of the honoree.
As the guests were seated, each found her chair pushed well under the table, and when Mrs. Verbeck drew hers out, it was ladened with packages containing many pretty gifts. Among the many messages of love and congratulations was an original poem by Mrs. Floyd Pierce. This read and thoroughly appreciated by all the guests, as well as the recipient.
Guests of Mrs. King, for Mrs. Verbeck were Mrs. Fanny Smith, Mrs. Rosa Kestenhclz, Mrs. Jonnie Kay, Mrs. N. F. Ballou, Mrs. F. E. Pierce, Mrs. Nellie Pierce.
The poem follows:
A LIFE STORY
Twas back in 1848 on an Indiana farm,
That a baby girl first saw and felt God's sunlight bright and warm.
And in that Indiana home with other girls and boys,
She grew to happy girlhood, amid Life's cares and joys.
Then came the roving spirit to their quiet Eastern home,
And unsettled the contentment that hitherto had come.
The farm was sold and Westward, to Missouri journeyed they.
A wild, unsettled country, unlike it is today.
Again they traveled Westward, to the rugged mountains, bold,
Of San Bernardino county, the land of the western sun.
Where old age becomes as childhood, and life anew is begun.
And thus the years have slipped away, some happy and some sad,
But peace has filled both heart and soul, and made the sad days glad.
Thus, today, by invitation, we are here to greet.
The heroine of this story, as we round the table meet.
So here's to many birthdays that may follow on life's way.
And here's to Mrs. Addie King, who planned this happy day.

And it was here to womanhood, our girlie grew space
And here she met her sweetheart, and here she answered, "yes!"
And there, just like the birdies, they flew to build a nest
And chose for that most precious spot the prairies of the West.
Twas in Nebraska they maintained the home they sought to build,
And here they prospered many years; each year with joy was filled.
God gave them four fine children, two girlies and two boys;
And how they planned both night and day for these new added joys.
And then, when health seemed wavering and the winters proved too cold.
