Auto Club Literature Put in Cornerstone The esteem which educational circles hold the touring fatalities of So. Calif. has been evidenced by the laying of the corner-stone of the new $400,000 high school at Santa Maria, in the southern part of the state. When the corner-stone was laid, touring literature or all kinds was put within its recesses. If ever it is opened in future ages, when excavations are being conducted on the buildings of the present era, the archaeologists of another time will find that the "open road" figured prominently in the activities of today. In the corner-stone are copies of the latest road report issued by the Auto Club of So. Calif., auto catalogues, and a copy of Touring Topics, the club's official magazine. Can you beat that? If it's from Witman's it’s good. It Costs No More to Buy a Kelly Kelly-Springfield Tire Company builds the best tire made today. They cost no more than other makes which sell WOMEN PURCHASING MORE BUICK CARS Women are becoming better judges of motor cars every year, according to William Goodrum, local and northern Orange-co distributor for the Buick. "We find every year," said Goodrum, "that women are coming to know and understand the value of a car. They are becoming more interested in its mechanical workings and its adjustments. "We never find a woman who is not delighted with the easy accessibility of all the adjustments. A few years back most of the women drivers could not have told you the difference between a spark plug and a cylinder, but today they know the name and function of every working part of the motor. "Most women are keen about the accessibility of the different adjustments of the Buick motor, and I think that is why you find it such a favorite car with all women—that and because it is so easy for a woman to drive. "Another thing that makes the women like our Buick cars is the sort of service they receive at our shop. "You know that we give absolutely free service for the first three months after we sell a car. During that time we encourage all owners to come in and let us aid them with any difficulties they may be having with the car. In that manner we are able to educate them to the proper use of the car and get it broken in in the right way. "You would be surprised to learn how little replacements we give because of this service. During the last year we have not been required to give ten dollars worth of parts on any car. "It is part of our policy to give more than we are required to in order that we may more than satisfy each and every customer. Even with our rebuilt cars we give a guarantee of three months service that means a lot to most purchasers. "But then the Buick is such a wonderfully built car that all it requires is proper treatment to make them last almost forever. "I personally know of any number of cars, some of them as old as 1917, that have had to spend but a few years." 150,000 Miles Years ago In five years, J.P. Portland, Ore., has miles in his Chevron Ninety" touring car 30,000 miles a year tance of six times says representative Taggart Co., No. Orcutons. For this time autos have averaged 22 miles of gasoline, 500 miles of oil and 12,000 miles of tires. His total mile not exceeded $100,000 of which was occupancy party who ramsmed addition to all this his car is such today pects to use it three years. This is a wonder! Every item is a recourse has proved and it is a set of figures with—a standard lure the service and automobile. Try it! What you really you buy an automobile miles of transport then you want the miles at the lowest price is only the You pay the balance whatever you save multiplied by the you travel. Take Creager's At the rate of one mile he has used 6150,000 miles. If his car that averaged the gallon he would gallons of gas—more than he actually ply that 3,181.82 gage price per gallon the last five years that he has saved his car on this one item. Try this in your own tuto your average and the price you pay day. Figure it out 150,000 miles and suits with Creager's ry other item of transportation—oil Figure in the purc car. H. Creager of Portland, Ore., has traveled 150,000 miles in his Chevrolet model "Four-Ninety" touring car—an average of 30,000 miles a year, or a total distance of six times around the world, says representative of the Frank P. Taggart Co., No. Orange Co., distributors. For this time and distance his car has averaged 22 miles on one gallon of gasoline, 500 miles on each quart of oil and 12,000 miles on each set of tires. His total repair expense has not exceeded $100, a goodly portion of which was occasioned by another party who rammed his fenders. In addition to all this the condition of his car is such today that Creager expects to use it three or four more years. This is a wonderful service record. Every item is a record in itself. Every mile has proved an economical smile. It is a set of figures to compare notes with—a standard by which to measure the service and the cost of any automobile. Try it yourself. What you really purchase when you buy an automobile is so many miles of transportation. Naturally then you want the greatest number of miles at the lowest cost. The purchase price is only the first installment. You pay the balance as you go. And whatever you save on every mile is multiplied by the number of miles you travel. Take Creager's ease for example. At the rate of one gallon for every 22 miles he has used 6,818.18 gallons or 150,000 miles. If he had purchased a car that averaged only 15 miles to the gallon he would have used 10,000 gallons of gas—or 3,181.82 gallons more than he actually needed. Multiply that 3,181.82 gallons by the average price per gallon of gasoline for the last five years and you will see that he has saved the price of a new car on this one item alone. Try this in your own case. Substitute your average gasoline mileage and the price you pay for gasoline today. Figure it out on the basis of 150,000 miles and compare the results with Creager's. Try it with every other item of the cost of motor transportation—oil, tires and repairs. Figure in the purchase price of the car. GABRIEL SNUBBERS REDUCE REBOUNDING Some shock absorbing devices, including snubbers, do not catch and "straighten out" a rebound at once but occupants of the car are subjected to a rather violent shaking up. This isn't true of the Gabriel snubber, says Nenno & Bock, local distributors. They make the car ride easily by eliminating excessive rebounding. Prevent spring breakage by keeping the springs from over-expanding. Reduce side-swaying, improve the steering and cause the car to hold the road by equalizing and controlling the movement of the car body. Protect the mechanism by reducing vibration. Prolong the life of tires by giving better traction. Reduce upkeep expense and make themselves a profitable investment. Make motoring a real comfort and pleasure. L. A.-MOJAVE ROAD NEARLY ALL PAVED Among the routes featured in today's bulletin of roads put out by the Automobile Club of Southern California are: LOS ANGELES TO COSCO HOT SPRINGS: The road is now entirely paved from Los Angeles to Mojave by way of the San Fernando boulevard, Saugus, Mint Canyon and Lancaster with the exception of a stretch of dirt road 3500 feet in length near Gloster, just north of Rosamond, and the last 2 miles into Mojave. From Mojave north, the road is in excellent condition thru the Owens River Valley to Little Lake by way of Cine and Red Rock Canyon. At a point 8.3 miles north of Little Lake, the main road leading to the right to Coso Hot Springs in encountered, indicated by a large sign erected by the proprietor of the resort! The place holds much of interest to the visitor, especially the brilliant colored mud springs which are very similar to the famous "Paint" "Cord Tires Cheapest," James, the Vulcanizer Why purchase fabric tires, when a cord tire, costing in the case of the Ajax only 15 per cent more gives 50 per cent greater service?" asks James the Vulcanizer, of North Los Angeles street. "It is the fabric tire, not the cord, that is expensive, value and service considered." The vulcanizer, who is local Ajax and Horseshoe distributor, points to tires as an outstanding example of the fact that many an article necessary for the given purpose is cheaper because of its quality, durability, etc. The percentage of cost due to labor and manufacture, the principal factors is greater on a fabric than on a cord. James has been getting a lot of orders from owners of Buicks and Dodges, with which the Ajax comes as original equipment. The Ajax lasts everlastingly, but when it does yield to hard and long service, the owner is only too glad to order a new set. James has had seven years' experience handling and repairing tires, and he regards his advice as an important part of the service he provides. While glad to get repair work when repairs pay, he has no patience with car-owners who will patch and patch at a tire, and in the end spend more than they would if they had obtained a new set in the first place. Try it with every other item of the cost of motor transportation—oil, tires and repairs. Figure in the purchase price of the car. Another notable feature in the case of Creager is the item of depreciation. In five years he has not suffered any loss by trading his car in for less than the price of a new one. Some people replace their cars every year or two. He has not had to yet and does not expect to for three or four years more.
