PRICE RISES REPORTED NEAR Several reports of price advances in leading motor cars soon to take effect were current this week among local dealers and sub-dealers, following the initiative taken by the Maxwell-Chalmers Co., about two weeks ago. At the same time price reductions still are not absolutely over, one of the latest cuts having been made by the Sandard Motor Car Co., which reduced from $300 to $1600. What gives credence to the reports is the fact o f the remarkable improvement in demand, which in the case of the Studebaker, Jordan, Maxwell and Chalmers, Packard and many other prominent makes of car is for outrunning the supply. The General Motors Co., for example, more than doubled its sales during the first quarter of this year as compared with last, and April shows no letup in the demand for its cars. March was the best month since August, 1920, for the industry in general. Sales of parts during the past calendar month were as large as those of any month last year, and probably larger, manufacturers estimate. This is especially extraordinary for states other than those like California whose climate makes motoring all year a matter of course. In addition, the number of new cars made this year, as shown by the exhibits at the various shows, is unusual, and whole medium priced cars are more numerous than ever, expensive cars are fully holding their own, or, in the case of the Lincoln, now made and serviced by Henry Ford, even larger. W. J. Brace, president of the National Automobile Dealers' Ass'n, predicts sales of 2,000,000 cars this year. Brace based his estimate on the higher prices for stable food commodities like grain, which are regarded as being an index if not the principal governing factor of living costs generally. Brace points out that the farmers own approximately one-third of all the cars in American possession today. Tire Appearances Very Deceitful "These are days of careful buying. There is a tendency on the part of the buyer to inquire closely into the merits of the respective articles we handle," says C. J. Nenno & Book, automobile tire and accessories dealer. "Take tires, for instance. The tire buyer is insisting upon a better and more dependable product, as he has had a good many and experiences with inferior tires in the past. Tires look a great deal alike in outside appearance; but the careful buyer realizes that the inside construction is the real vital part. The strength lies in the treads and fabric contained in the tire. That is why so many tires blow out, leaving a perfectly good tread only partly worn out." "There are many varieties of fabrics used in tire construction costing the manufacturer various prices. In Goodyear tires, for instance, only the finest grade of fabric is used. It is made from the famous Sarival Cotton. This cotton is the long staple type, and is grown on Goodyear's 20,000 acre cotton plantation in Arizona. When this cotton is woven into tire fabric it has a breaking pressure of 400 pounds per inch. Throat short staple cotton that is woven into fabric and used in inferior tires only has a breaking pressure of 300 pounds per inch, thus making a tire 25 per cent weaken." STUDEBAKER SALES Harry D. It is further stated—a fact that did not come out at the time Ford was said to be short one hundred millions of dollars in the midst of the slump in the automobile business—that it was only through the active co-operation of many of the country's leading dealers, who distribute for that the Detroit manufacturer was able to weather the financial gale. Brace points out that the farmers own approximately one-third of all the cars in American possession today. Manufacture of the Star car, which will be distributed on a commercial scale probably not later than June 15 by Durant, is only one step in the fight on Henry Ford led by interests allied with certain prominent manufacturers of parts, a man who appeared to be in a position to know declared here. The battle in fact is a continuation of the attack made on Ford within the past year by leading financial powers of New York, and its tangible renewal by means of the Star car will receive the backing of these same powers and others, it is said, including Jewish bankers, netted at Ford's attacks on the Jewish race generally in the columns of his Dearborn Independent. The Duponts are mentioned in this connection as being also actively interested in Ford's downfall. It is declared that the showdown has come between Ford and his opponents who are smarting under the manner in which Ford's price cuts—not the least of which have been on the tractor and truck—forced prices down. The Anaheimer repeated a report issued on good authority here that practically all the interest engaged in the battle on Ford agreed to take a loss on the Star car in order to break Ford. It is understood that Durant is acting chiefly as a distributor for the Star and will not undertake to provide the service which will go with it. The Star car will be assembled by Durant, however, at all of his factories—Oakland, Long Island City, Lansing, Muncie and Toronto, Can. An output of 20,000 cars per day by Jan. 1, will be put out from the Long Island City and Lansing plants, which will be enlarged for the purpose. Reports are premature, at least, that Durant has acquired the huge factory of the Willys Corporation at Elizabeth, N.J. Los Angeles Phone 464 WALKERS SHOULD FACE MOVING CARS Pedestrians and motorists have been getting so mixed up lately on the highways that radical change in pedestrianism is about to be launched on the public by the authorities. All pedestrians using the highways should walk opposite to the rolling lines of vehicle traffic. That, in a nut-shell, is the latest recommendation to be made by the Auto Club of So. Calif. Auto club officers representing the safety bureau of the organization are suggesting throuout the state that all persons who must walk along the roads and highways should keep to the left. In other words, the hikers should move just contrary to the movement of the vehicles. The reason for this is given by club officers in the fact that pedestrians can then see what is approaching them and get out of the way. If the pedestrian is walking with his back to approaching vehicles then he cannot see what is rolling up on him from the rear. At the same time it is easier for the motorist because he won't have to continually dodge pedestrians who do not hear his approach. Old hoboes, says the club, always walk in the opposite way to the movement of vehicles traffic. They have learned by many years on the road that this is the best way to avoid accidents. There is nothing in the state law to prevent pedestrians from adopting this new method of procedure, and it is strongly recommended by the Auto Club. In fact, the new method may at some near date become a part of the state law, so there you are. WONDERS OF MOJAVE DESERT REVEALED (Continued from Page 1) river, famous hid-and-seek river of the desert. Last year Silver Lake was dry, no flood waters reaching its flat surface of more than a hundred square miles, which made a wonderful racetrack for motor vehicles. Commissioner Frances D. Pearce of the Salvation Army at Peking reports: "Large numbers of girls were sold in China last year by their parents and guardians in order to obtain the wherewithal to live. "It is notorious that many of these girls were used for prostitution purposes. General Booth in common with all who desire the preservation of womanhood, was shocked upon hearing the news and wrote from London that everything possible should be done to prevent this traffic, even to the extent of providing the parents with needed money for food. If the girls were placed under our protection, instead of being handed to the procurer." MOTOR DECLARED HEART OF AUTO "The motor is the heart of a good automobile, says Edward S. Jordan, president of the Jordan Motor Car Co. "But the soul of a car finds expression through the spirit of the men who make it. The heart of this remarkable Jordan is a new, distinctive and exclusive motor, of the thoroughly modern, lighter, high speed type. Engineers have long been baffled in an effort to build a motor that combined silence with what we love to call a "punch." When they built for silence the power was not there. This Jordan motor has what the small boy would call a "Wallop,"—a silent thrilling something that makes the old driver turn and grin. Chain drive is silent. Gears never remain so. Three point motor suspension reduces strains. A three legged stool never rocks like a four-legged table. Four bearings distribute the load on the crank shaft evenly. Every crank pin has an adjacent main bearing. Force feed lubrication with a precision instrument constantly before the owner's eye. As long as there is AMERICAN CARS FLOODING EUROPE The president of a well known American motor car company has just returned from an extended tour in Europe, where he visited most of the large cities. His trip was primarily for pleasure. "The most valuable feature of our trip was, I think, the extreme safety faction of getting back to this country," he said. "If you want to preciate America I would recommend a few months abroad. While I have been in this country only a few days, the decided improvement in business conditions is unmistakable. In the last three months this country has gone a long way toward recovery. "Abroad you see American cars everywhere. In Greece, for instance, the majority of automobile carry American nameplates. Saw Cadillacs and Dodges galore. In France, of course it is now next to impossible to sell American built cars, due both to the high demand and to the reluctance of French mechanics to give service on foreign built cars—evidently they are trying to rebuild French industry as this is a pronounced lack of enthusiasm over any imported product. "I am convinced of one thing namely, that all this talk about superiority of European-built motors is unfounded. The American built car is in every way, with a single exception of the care and hard work put on custom built bodies superior to the European car. Our cars are freer from mechanical trouble, and, in the main, give more interrupted service." Firestone Values Larger Than Eve The Nu Way Tire represents states that the season of tire sales rapidly approaching and the improvement of general business is stimulating demand. Last year Silver Lake was dry, no flood waters reaching its flat surface of more than a hundred square miles, which made a wonderful racetrack for motor vehicles. This year, however, the flood waters of the Mojave were so great they created a vast lake seven feet deep, and for several months it will be necessary for motorists coming direct from Baratow to swing around the north end of the miniature sea to get to the town of Silver Lake. The region around Silver Lake seems to be on the verge of a great period of activity, as a new kind of building stone, of which there is a large supply, is to be marketed. Besides the silver, gold and copper which this region is know to contain, many of the lesser minerals are found—minerals that were worth their weight in gold during the war. Traces of borax have also been found, and a substitute for Fullers earth in the clarifying of oils that has proven by test to possess many desirable qualities will doubtless add much to the activity of the region. One of the most interesting minerals recently found is one which, by process of heat, enters into different metals such as copper and iron, making the copper so hard it will cut glass and the iron absolutely rust proof. Development along this line has been studied for years and the new mineral, if it can be fully developed, will add much desired quality to the various metals. Hardened copper, as we know, was one of the arts of the ancients, and only within the past year have metallurgists succeeded in duplicating the feat. What the new mineral will mean to industry is hard to foretell. After an interesting survey the Franklin, piloted by W. B. Allen of the Whittier dealership and R. L. Larson of Ralph Hamlin, Inc., headed for home by way of Saratoga Springs, Granite Well and Randsburg. From Randsburg to Mojave, a distance of 43 miles, the Camel hit a fast clip over the desert road, and had it not been for a few cars and trucks which could not be passed at high speed due to the narrow road the time would doubtless have been well under an hour. As it was the jaunt was made in 62 minutes, a fair average for the fag end of a strenuous trip. RIVET HEATERS One of the new rivet heaters uses kerosene for fuel, transforming it into gas that is blown by compressed air to create a temperature of 200 degrees. This Jordan motor has what the small boy would call a "Wallop"—a silent thrilling something that makes the old driver turn and grim. Chain drive is silent. Gears never remain so. Three point motor suspension reduces strains. A three legged stool never rocks like a four legged table. Four bearings distribute the load on the crank shaft evenly. Every crank pin has an adjacent main bearing. Force feed lubrication with a precision instrument constantly before the owner's eye. As long as there is oil there is pressure. Manifold designed for low grade gas. Many car owners wonder why the Jordan is so economical. A snappy powerful, high grade, exclusive motor just as accessible as any mechanic wants a good motor to be." Purchasing Auto Only First Step, Says Dunton To realize the importance of maintenance to the automobile owner, one has only to think of what that man must do who takes a fleet of motor cars into a wilderness where he expects to operate them," says George Dunton, local Ford, Fordson and Lincoln distributor. So far as the individual car owner is concerned, any city is no better than a desert if it does not contain the essentials of maintenance for the car he is driving. When any dealer has sold one hundred or one thousand cars, his establishment today is woefully incomplete unless it includes the parts, the knowledge, and the equipment to supply those cars with every requirement for continuous and satisfactory service. For these reasons, the veteran motorist learns as much about the dealer as the car, when he comes to buy. Only the first buyer is liable to forget that the car he buys contains only the elements of constant utility, and that the dealer alone can assure the continued performance that makes a happy and satisfied motorist." Orange-co. “It is an even greater satisfaction to know that your car possesses the power and endurance which such a rate of speed demands. “The crowds who attended the automobile races in Havana, Cuba, last Fall did not expect such speed from a Chevrolet. “In the first event on October 30th the Chevrolet covered ten-miles in nine minutes, forty-four seconds which was at the rate of $1.62 miles per hour, defeating eight other cars, six of which were of prominent American make and seven of which were especially built for racing. “On the second day of racing in the event for cars of small displacement the Chevrolet won again, this time covering five miles in four minutes, 16 seconds or at the rate of 70.21 miles per hour! “The third Chevrolet victory was over an eight mile course which it traveled in seven minutes flat averaging $8.57 miles an hour. “For these three victories it was awarded the first prize of $1,000 each. “The most remarkable feature of the Chevrolet performance was the fact that the car was wrecked while practising, the day before the first race. Mechanics worked all night putting in a new cylinder block, new pistons, connecting rods and other parts, all of which were taken from the regular service stock of the local dealer.” Paige Sales Up 50 Per Cent in Month How rapidly business conditions are improving is evident by the sales record for 1922 of the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Co. “Paige sales for February were a half larger than those for January,” says Mr. H.
