April 5 — Delayed one day because of unfavorable weather conditions, King Baseball ascended the throne at Washington Park today when the Portland and Los Angeles clubs met in the opening game of the season in this city. Both Managgers Kenworthy and Killefer declared their clubs were favored by the extra day's rest. Joe Sargent, third baseman of the Portland club, was ill for several days last week, and Kenworthy says the day's rest helped the infielder. John L. Sullivan, outfielder for the Angels, who has been out of the game for a week because of a sprained ankle, also reported that member in better shape. Wade Killefer warmed up in Sullivan's place in left field. ARREST 13 AS SMUGGLERS LOS ANGELES. April 5 — What is claimed to be one of the largest whiskey smuggling gang ever found in So. Calif., have been broken up with the arrest by the police of several members. Twelve men and one woman were held, together with a large auto especially equipped to carry a quantity of liquor and narcotics. Orders were sent to San Diego to seize four other machines of similar type. The arrest in San Pedro of a man with several business cards on one which was written "Dutch, save one for me," with the address 814½ So. San Pedro street, was the clue that led to the raid. SEND PHOTOS OF SUSPECTS Photographs of Jim Flynn and Jack Rogers suspects in the big fur robbery at Santa Ana, have been sent to the chief of police of San Diego and the sheriff of San Diego county by City Marshal Sam Jernigan of Santa Ana. Rogers recently was seen at Tia Juana by a Santa Ana recently there. Rogers is said to have sold programs at the races there. Ray Stillings, the other one of the trio, now is serving a term in San Quentin penitentiary. They robbed Los Angeles fur salesmen or furs worth approximately $2100. TRUSTED EMPLOYE IS BANK ROBBER LOS ANGELES, April 5—William H. McFee and a man named Whitehill were the employees of the Farmers and Merchants' National Bank who robbed the safely deposit box which the Yokohama Specie Bank has there. They took $90,000. McFee was 71 years old and for 26 years was a trusted subordinate in the bank. He scattered the money among half a dozen women friends, ranging in age from young to old. Purchase of a $630 diamond ring which he wore to work helped fasten suspicion upon him. On many previous occasions McFee returned property left by well-to-do patrons which he could have made away with without being caught, a statement of the bank said. Whitehill made the impress ion from which the key was made. He took only a few hundred dollars of the total. MRS. "BIG TIME” ACTS AT THE CALIFORNIA The vaudeville road show which Meiklejohn and Dunn have arranged for the theatre goers of Anaheim this week is an exceptionally good one. Tomorrow at the California Theatre the Haley Sisters, those attractive singers who completed an engagement at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles last week, will be attraction on this show. These dainty misses are vaudeville’s foremost exponents of harmony and although quite young they are possessed of remarkable voices. Another act coming to the California direct from the big time is that of The Three Senators, Hayden Hall and Snyder, who have a long time contract with the Pantages circuit of theatres. Their act is entitled "A Thousand Pounds-of Harmony" and they surely live up to their billing. The O'Neils are versatile entertainers who promise a novel offering which they bring to California direct from the easts. Victoria Allen of Dave and Victoria Allen is said to be the funniest comediene in vaudeville. This team present one of the most delightful rural acts that can be imagined and the running-fire comments of this pair on the doings of Toonerville's leading citizens will cause gales of laughter. On the screen, "Burn Em Up Barnes," a photoplay of a hundred laughs featuring Johnny Hines will be shown in addition to the vaudeville. KEEP HARVEY FROM GENOA WASHINGTON. April 5.
