SPORTS JEFFRIES' TRAINER HANDLES ELK GYM The local lodge of Elks has just completed its gym and bath and engaged Roger Cornell, former trainer of James J. Jeffries and Jack Johnson, ex-champion prize fighters, to take charge. Cornell has had 15 years’ experience as trainer and masseur. He also was formerly coach and trainer of the Porland, San Francisco, Oakland and Vernon baseball clubs of the Pacific coast league. Portland and San Francisco won the pennant during his incumbency. Cornell trained Stanley Ketehel, former champion, for the fight in which Ketchel knocked out Billie Pape at Colima. He also was trained at the Olympic club, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Athletic club. Cornell won the world’s rough water swimming championship in 1901 by defeating Sid Cavill of Australia in a swim around the seal rocks at San Francisco. In 1900 he won the American amateur wrestling championship. In 1903 he was one of the best single scull rowers on the coast. He also is a scientific boxer, though he has never taken part in a public bout. Boxing contests will be held twice a month at the clubhouse auditorium, which will hold 1200 fans. The first show will take place April 20. The proceeds will go to the Elks’ base ball team. There will be six four-round bouts. Chet Neff, one of the leading lightweight in the country, will head the bill with a match against a Los Angeles boxer. Eddie Randall, formerly of St. Louis, one of the leading trainers and boxers in the east, will take charge of the instruction in boxing and be Cornell’s aid. He has taken part in more than 150 battles. Cornell for some time ran weekly boxing matches at the St. Louis armory under the auspices of a well known St. Louis club. The armory has a seating capacity of 5,000. NEW TODAY WANTED—Housework, 1221 Pearlstst FOR SALE—Turkeys. Phone 598-W WANTED—Washing to do at home, 416 S. Palm. PENNEY STYLES IN VOGUE MAGAZINE Vogue Magazine holds a warm place in the affection of fashionable circles this world over. Its delineation of authoritative modes as passed by New York and Paris has long been source of delightful inspiration and appreciation with thousands of women who are swayed by the decrees of current styles. Not a little interest in being evinced by the ladies about town in the exquisite gowns illustrated in this magazine which are models embraced in the presentation made by J. C. Penny Company stores. The gowns are by a famous designer whose creations are accepted in fashionable realms as unfailingly chic and authentic. In vogue for March 15th, are six decidedly smart gowns for the matron of youth, illustrated from the models shown at the J. C. Penney Co. stores, while it is stated by the manager of the local store, six more of their styles are to be depleted in the Vogue for April 15th. As can be readily appreciated, the adoption of the styles of this popular mercantile institution by such a famous chronicler of fashion as Vogue, is an evidence of J. C. Penney Company's leadership in the matter of style that cannot be denied. Orange Athletic club defeated La Verne college on the latter floor, 47 to 21, in a hotly contested basketball game last night. Orange athletes charge the collegians with unnecessary roughness. Root, of La Verne, was assessed three personal fouls in the first five minutes and was warned by the referee. The third team boys went to the Central school last evening and played the great American game. When they had played the last innning, the score stood 5 to 5, and as it was late in the afternoon the tie was not played off. The Parent-Teachers Assn. has installed an ice cream freezer at the Junior High school and the pupils anxiously await the noon hour so they may go out and buy an ice cream cone as an appetizer. High School News A representative from Bullock's department store was at the high school yesterday displaying some of the new creations for school sport and dress wear. She put complete outfits on high school girls and as they walked across the platform, the representative described the dress, the material and the workmanship. Huntington Beach and Anahiem are scheduled for a tennis tournament on the local courts after school. This is the second of the league tournaments. With the end of this week, the third quarter of the school year terminates and next week begins the last lap of the school year. Report cards will be sent to the parents next week.
