Building Permits
ARNOLD KRAEMER BLDG.
TO BE STARTED SHORTLY
Anaheim continues to maintain its record of the fastest growing city in Orange-co with building permits in excess of this date last year which was a record-breaker.
$5,000 HOMES IN
BIG DEMAND HERE
"There's a crying need for homes here, which in the majority of cases should be at prices not exceeding $5,000," said Harold Clairmont, Greater Anaheim Realtor.
"In the very near future we may have in our midst an industrial enterprise which would bring in an influx of new residents for whom we could not supply adequate housing facilities."
"There is a general tendency in arriving at values to base the price on the individual's home by what his or her neighbor received for the sale of their property. People do not stop to think that this creates an inflated figure, the amount of which is lacking."
"This also does not recognize the fact that building materials have some down."
"This office has the greatest faith in the future of Anaheim and has gone on record as anticipating a population for Anaheim in 1925 of from 20,000 to 25,000."
Clairmont has been doing business for some weeks past in his new office at 304 W. Center-st in the new postoffice building, where he has accommodations inferior to those of no real estate office in the city.
In the comparatively short time he has been here Clairmont has built up a clientele as desirable as it is diverse.
Total permits for the first three months last year were $309,350, compared with $281,495 for the first two and one-half months this year. The last half of this month promises to exceed the total for the last six weeks. A $100,000 permit for the Arnold Kraemer bldg., will be filed within a few days. There will also be a permit for $15,000 to $20,000 for the Reuther market to be constructed by F. A. Yungbluth, alterations to the Elsie Rust block and other big improvements known to be coming up shortly.
Permits for the first three months of last year compared with the first two and one-half months of this year are:
| Year | No. | No. |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Jan. | 38 | $130,400 | 47 | $83,896 |
| Feb. | 34 | 58,950 | 46 | 117,013 |
| Mar. | 32 | 120,000 | 30 | 80,635 |
| Building construction of all kinds has been greatly retarded this winter because of the extensive unseasonable weather. Given some real Anaheim weather for a time and building permits will see a decided jump, say builders.
This going to be a great home-building year, according to every indication. Building costs are considerably below a year ago.

COMPANY'S LOANS ON 5 TO 1 BASIS
The building and loan phase of the Own Your Own Home campaign is what interests C. R. Harrison and Marshal E. Beebe of Beebe & Harrison, who constitute the local office of the Western Loan and Building Co.
The two men said today: "We are doing all we can to furnish funds for home building, and have interested an outside corporation with assets of over $8,000,000 to come into the town and loan money to build homes."
WOMAN'S ASSAILANT SHOT BY ATTACKERS
LOS ANGELES, March 20—Harry L. Lane, 121 Breeze-ave, Venice, was shot in the left arm today whe he, responding to a woman's cries for help, grappled with an unidentified man who had attempted to attack Mrs. W. S. Wilson, 115 Breeze-ave. The bullet lodged in the muscles of Lane's back.
OCEAN RATE WAR OPENS
SAN FRANCISCO, March 20—The declaration of "open rates" by some of the leading Japanese, British and American lines for trans-Pacific cities is overrun with Russian rats.
BUDAPEST, Mar. 18—Rats and mice are migrating in swarms from the Russian famine area, and Budapest is now overrun with them. All efforts to rid the city of this scourge have failed, and the devastation caused by them goes on apace. The market halls, food stores and warehouses are swarming with the rodents, which run about even in the daytime. So dangerous they become that when disturbed they will turn and show fight. The situation is aggravated by the dearth of cats in Hungary.
ON 5 TO 1 BASIS
The building and loan phase of the Own Your Own Home campaign is what interests C. R. Harrison and Marshal F. Beebe of Beebe & Harrison, who constitute the local office of the Western Loan and Building Co.
The two men said today: "We are doing all we can to furnish funds for home building, and have interested an outside corporation with assets of over $8,000,000 to come into the town and loan money to build homes. The company has, through its local office, Beebe & Harrison, already completed four loans, and two more now are in process of negotiation."
"The Western Loan & Building Co. for every hundred dollars paid in by Anaheimers will loan five hundred dollars for building a home. We have seven different plans for loans.
"The safety and soundness of the company, its general plan and method of business, the fair and equal treatment of its stockholders, the fulfillment of its contracts and the integrity and efficiency of its management are assured not only by its long record, 30 years, of achievement and prosperity, but thru the permits and licenses granted to and under which the company operates in the several states based upon a personal visit, inspection and audit by the Building and Loan Commissioner of California, the State Examiner of Montana, the State Examiner of Wyoming, the State Auditor of Washington, the Corporation Department of Oregon, the Bank Commissioner of the State of Utah, the State Securities Department of the State of Utah and by verified reports to the following: State Bureau of Banking in charge of the Bank and Blue Sky Law of the State of Idaho, and the Department of Banking of the State of Nevada."

CHARMING EXCLUSIVE AFTERNOON FROCK
LOS ANGELES, March 20.—Harry L.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 20.—The declaration of "open rates" by some of the leading Japanese, British and American lines for trans-Pacific traffic is interpreted to mean a rate war between lines represented here and northern British and Japanese lines, out of Seattle, Vancouver,
BUDAPEST, Mar. 18.—Rats and mice are migrating in swarms from the Russian famine area, and Budapest is now overrun with them. All efforts to rid the city of this scourge have failed, and the devastation caused by them goes on apace. The market halls, food stores and warehouses are swarming with the rodents, which run about even in the daytime. So dangerous have they become that when disturbed they will turn and show fight. The situation is aggravated by the dearth of cats in Hungary.
In the war, when food was scarce, thousands of families ate cats. Since then the increasing demand for cat fur as a capital substitute for expensive furs has taken a further toll.

BETTER HOUSES
ONE NEED HERE
"The demand for houses here is great," said Walter J. Rose of the Orange County Realty Company. "There never has been a larger call for houses than at present. We are turning away people every day.
"The other day a very prominent man from Denver, Colo., came here inquiring for a substantial house. He could not get it and gave up the attempt.
"We need a better class of houses—two-story houses like Easterners are accustomed to. An Easterner said a while ago that he couldn't get his furniture into these little bungalows.
"There are eight-room houses here, but they are old buildings. We need some classy, up-to-date houses." You take in the west part of Los Angeles they are building fine houses and selling them, too. These houses have a complete heating equipment and are such as would be found in the Middle West or the East—homes with nice architecture and decoration, selling for from $15,000 to $20,000."
This company, now situated at 133 South Los Angeles street, convenient both to Center street and part of the automobile district, is doing an excellent business, George M. Ross, of the firm, is secretary-manager of the Anaheim Walnut Growers Association, affiliated with the California Walnut Growers Association.
BRITISH SHIPYARDS
British shipyards last year regained from the United States the lead for tonnage of vessels of more than 100 tons each launched.
