Thomson, in the United States district court Pittsburgh district, imposed a fine of $5,000 on the Eureka Brewing Co. of Smithton, Pa., following a plea of guilty of manufacturing beer beyond legal limit. In addition, several breweries have been put out of business by enforcement Chief John Exniclos. Director Collins of Kentucky is highly pleased with the attitude of sheriffs of the state, and feels that the sentiment in favor of strict enforcement of the Prohibition laws is becoming stronger thruout the state. He reports that over half have officially assured him of co-operation and are demonstrating that they mean it. Fifteen Newark, N. Permits for the year 1922 having been denied, two large breweries of Wisconsin were closed on orders from Washington. Like action will follow in several similar cases. Figures compiled by Director Pearson of South Dakota show that 23.28 gallons was the average amount of alcohol sold by each druggist of that state during 1921, or an average of less than two gallons of alcohol per druggist per month. Director Pearson states that he has had very few complaints as to violations of the law by druggists in selling alcohol, and these have generally proved to be unsubstantiated. In accordance with a recent order of Indian Commissioner Charles H. Burke, all leases of tribal or individual Indian land executed or approved through the offices of the Indian agents must hereafter contain a liquor clause rendering the lease invalid if the lessee permits liquor to be introduced upon or manufactured on the leased tracts of land. Western and Pacific coast directors are proceeding under a ruling of the United States federal court in Los Angeles that agents may, on the public highway, seize and search privately owned vehicles without production of a search warrant.
