The Automobile Club of Southern California has issued this bulletin of road conditions:
San Francisco to Crescent City: Highway, Sausalito to San Rafael, Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Healdsburg. One mile of dirt road out of Healdsburg and then necessary to detour on what is known as the Dry Creek and Dutcher Canyon Road to the Italian Swiss Colony. During wet weather this is not very good. However, passable at all times. While it is true that the Highway Commission have completed pavement from Lytton to Geyserville, they are doing a great deal of construction work from Geyserville to the Italian Swiss Colony. Therefore Dutcher Canyon is considered the best detour.
Fair from the Italian Swiss Colony to Cloverdale and fair from there to Hoopland, Leaving Hopland, motorists use the county road for several miles, which is in fair condition, thence main road to El Robles, fair. Highway to Ukiah and Calpella. Highway grade from Calpella to Willits, with the expectation of a short stretch about 12 miles north of Ukiah where construction work is under way and a steam shovel is being used. The road is open and in fair condition except for a one-mile detour which is rough and muddy and would be extremely poor after a heavy rain.
We understand that a contract has been let for pavement between Ukiah and Willits which would naturally cause some detours in this section. The road from Willits to Eureka has held up very well this winter, no slides having occurred. As most of the rains are over in that section of California, there is no reason why this road cannot be recommended, but it must be borne in mind that if we should have heavy storms it would not be advisable for at least 48 hours. As most of the rains are over in that section of California, there is no reason why this road cannot be recommended, but it must be borne in mind that if we should have heavy storms it would not be advisable for at least 48 hours. There is a fair dirt road from Willits to Lytville and Cummings. Highway grade from Cummings to Geberville, Dyerville, Scotia and Lolets, thence highway to Eureka, Eureka to Areata good, thence some rough stretches between Arcata and Orick, and fair from there to Requa where it is necessary to ferry the Klamath River. Extremely poor from Regina to Crescent City.
Mail stages are making the trip from Eureka to Crescent City in 8 or 9 hours. At the present time the road from Crescent City to Grant's Pass is closed on account of snow. However, it is expected to be open within a week.
Conditions from Crescent City north to Gold Beach and Goos Bay are as follows:
Crescent City to Brookings, muddy.
Brookings to Gold Beach rough, extremely slow.
Bandon to Coquille, necessary to ship by boat—$4.00 per car.
Coquille to Marshfield, fair.
We do not recommend the above route from Eureka for the next month, possibly six weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Eureka to Red Bluff or Redding by way of Bridgeville closed by snow.
