Thurstday, February 23, 1922 SPORT GIANTS MAY HAVE BROTHERS AS REGULARS Jess and Virgil Barnes are expected to be prominent on the New Jess and Virgil Barnes are expected to be prominent on the New York pitching staff next season. SUNDAY ELKS PLAY VERNON WOODMEN Anaheim's champion Elk baseball team will clash with the team representing Vernon camp of the Modern Woodmen of America at Anaheim high school field Sunday, Manager Billy Knott announced today. The locals are anxious to get in the best possible shape for the contest scheduled for a week from Sunday with the Alexander Giants, whirlwind negro team of Los Angeles. Local fans will be interested to know that Carl Stephens, Santa Ana boy and star catcher with the Tacoma Northwestern league club, will help coach the Santa Ana high school team this year. Efforts are being made to arrange for Stephens to be with the Elks team throuout the season providing he doesn't go back to professional ball. He would be a remarkable addition to the team, being a heavy sticker and a man who continually peaks up his teammates. Stevens has been a prominent figure in the minor leagues for six years. While playing semi-professional baseball with teams in Southern California, he was watched by a scout and immediately signed for a trial. Since that time Stevens has played with Beaumont in the Texas league, Evansville in the Three I league, Denver in the Western league, San Francisco in the Pacific Coast league and Tacoma in the Northwestern league. BIG GALLERY SEES WOMAN CUE SHARK Miss Frances Anderson, world's greatest woman billiard player, appeared before a large gallery at Dugas & Myre's, billiard rooms last night. She gave an exhibition of clever fancy trick and shots and won a game from Charles Triplett by the score of 60 to 43. All her shots were very cleverly executed. Village Gossip Every monkey in its place. J. E. Prentice of Birch street, Santa Ana, imported four and two escaped. One of the two was captured easily, but the other—oh, me, oh my! The heart palpitations of several full grown cats, whose tails said monkey seized, have hardly quieted yet. One hundred or more residents chased him along South Sycamore and other streets to a walnut grove near the Pacific Electric tracks, where he finally was caught. Have you seen "Smillin' Pat?" Then you just missed one of the best salesmen in his line that ever struck Anaheim. Sergeant-Major Terence Rooney of Los Angeles, who was wounded during the war at Gallipoli, and who is now making his living selling pencils, memoranda books, etc., was in Fullerton this morning, and came to Anaheim this afternoon to engage in the same work. He wears a croix de guerre and other medals, and is a member of the Los Angeles Post of the American Legion the Disabled Veterans of the World War, and the 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux, a French organization. He has had a varied experience, being born in New York, but enlisting in the British navy at the age of 15. He was on a ship the captain of which ran amuck off the coast of Africa, killing most of the crew, but escaped injury, and later became chief of police in the Island of Mauritis. He then went to Australia to the gold fields, and later was aboard a ship off the coast of Chill which caught fire, but he escaped. Again he was aboard a Scotch vessel which became a prey to the Russians in the Russo-Japanese war, and was sentenced to be shot, but the sentence was reprived. He came back to the States in 1910. He tried to enlist in both the American and Canadian armies during the war but each time was rejected. He then enlisted with the Australians, and was wounded at Gallipoli, spending 14 months in the BIG GALLERY SEES WOMAN CUE SHARK Miss Frances Anderson, world's greatest woman billiard player, appeared before a large gallery at Dugas & Myre's, billiard rooms last night. She gave an exhibition of clever fancy trick and shots and won a game from Charles Triplett by the score of 60 to 43. All her shots were very cleverly executed. ORANGE-CO SOCIAL CLUB PLANS BLDG. There is talk among leading members of the Orange County Social Club, started some 18 months ago in Santa Ana, of erecting a modern block in down town Santa Ana, the first floor to be given up to stores, the second or third to a clubroom. About 400 joined the club when it was organized, and at that time the plan, stated it is said in the articles of organization, was to obtain space in the then proposed new First National Bank building. The bank building was never put up, and the directors of the club may be called together to change the articles, if necessary, in order to permit the club to erect a structure of its own. "For several years I have had trouble with the lowest part of my back and my hips and my legs would ache with that tired ache. I could hardly stand on my feet at times. I was always able to do my work although I did not feel good. I saw Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound advertised and having heard several praise it I decided to try it. I feel first-rate at the present time. It has done wonders for me and I keep it in the house right along. I always recommend it to others who are sick and ailing."—Mrs. J. M. SIBBERT, 4082 High St., Everett, Washington. To do any kind of work, or to play for that matter, is next to impossible if you are suffering from some form of female trouble. It may cause your back or your legs to ache, it may make you nervous and irritable. You may be able to keep up and around, but you do not feel good. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound is a medicine for women. It is especially adapted to relieve the cause of the trouble and then these annoying pains, aches and "no good" feelings disappear.
