PASSAGE OF BONUS BILL NOW CERTAIN WASHINGTON, Feb. 17.—Passage of the Adjusted Compensation Bill for the benefit of ex-service men appears assured, with the advocacy by President Harding of the sales tax as a means of raising the revenue. In the Senate Senator Calder proposed that the financial provisions be eliminated from the bill, leaving the provisions for insurance, farm and home aid, land settlement and vocational education. The President, in his letter to Chairman Fordney of the House Ways and Means Committee, said after declaring again that any bonus bill must carry its own means of financing: "I find myself unable to suggest any commendable plan other than that of a general sales tax. Such a tax will distribute the cost of rewarding the ex-service men in such a manner that it will be borne by all the people whom they served and does not commit the Government to class imposition of taxes or the resumption of the burdens recently repealed, the maintenance of which can be justified only by a great war emergency." "Granting that it is not fair to oppose any proposed plan without offering a substitute, let me repeat that I believe the American people will accept the levy of a general sales tax to meet the proposed bonus payments, and we should contribute thereby no added difficulties to the problems of readjustment. If Congress will not adopt such a plan, it would be wise to addition to Santa Ana A petition to Santa Ana council to annex approximately 300 acres lying immediately south of Santa Ana city limits was being prepared today for circulation among residents in the territory. There are only seven or eight but a vote will be necessary. ANAHEIM YOUTHS GET SCOUT BADGES Approximately 200 Boy Scouts and 150 parents and other members of their families were present last night at a court of honor held at the First Congregational church, Santa Ana, when awards for scout work were made. Anaheim winners were Paul Sloop, first class badge; and Jack Mattes, John Shea and James Fitzgibbons, merit badges. All are of Troop 2. Scoutmaster Roland E. Dye was in charge of the gathering. Dye and D. Eyman Huff of El Modena, head of the county council; George W. Sloop, chairman of district No. 4 and Leon Whitsell, chairman of district No. 3, made addresses. Dye explained the severe tests fulfillment of which was required to win the awards. Victor A. Teany of Costa Mesa was elected assistant scoutmaster, a new office. Among the communities represented at the meeting were Anaheim, Santa Ana, Fullerton, Costa Mesa, Newport, Olinda, Tustin and Orange. Fifteen troops were present. lst the legislation go over until there is a situation which will justify the large outlay." Dr. Geissinger will do the preaching for these meetings and Mr. Ellis Rhodes will give his entire time to campaign in song. March 26th to April 8th there will be a service each evening except Saturday. Gospel teams of men are being organized and hold their first meeting Sunday night at 6:30. The young people of the church have already voluntarily taken action to help by prayer and personal work. The Epworth League and the senior league will hold joint prayer meetings each Sunday night at 6 o'clock until March 26th, beginning this Sunday night. The Sunday school is working by classes and departments and will be continuously at work until Easter. The special preaching services will be preceded by a series of cottage prayer meetings under the direction of W. M. Wellman assisted by 18 church visitors. There will be meetings for the men of the church and for the high school students and for the women and it is hoped that the campaign will result in a large gathering of converts as well as in the building up of the entire church. Already a marked interest is manifest and a willingness on the part of all the members to help. Emphasis will be laid upon prayer, the leadership of the Holy Spirit and personal work and no professional evangelist will be employed. This will be the 26th campaign of the kind conducted under the direction of Dr. Geissinger, who was the leader of the general Methodist Evangelistic Campaign in California, Arizona and Nevada year before last. Harding's sermon last night at the Grand theatre. "If there is a hell, and I believe there is one," said the evangelist, "it is my duty as a minister of the gospel to warn people against going there. "Some people say they don't believe God, who created man, would damn him. God doesn't have to damn any one. Men pull away from the influence of the Holy Ghost, close their ears to the gospel call, turn from the pleadings of Christian friends, turn lightly away from convicting sermons and songs, and can you say God sends such persons to hell, after He has given them ten thousand warnings? If they go to hell they go there in spite of God. "The crowd that is going to hell is made up of unbelievers, liars, the fearful, idolaters, Christ rejecters, and Holy Ghost rejectors. You don't have to be a cusser, a drunkard, or a murderer to go to hell. You don't have to dance to go there, and this old world is jazzing its way hellward. All you have to do is reject Christ or the Holy Ghost."
