Monday, February 6, 1922 SPORTING EVENTS Jimmy Murphy’s European Trophies Still in Europe; He Has Some Record Jimmy Murphy, international speed champion, has never been awarded a cup, a medal or any other trophy as evidence of his succession of victories on the speed trails of America and Europe. The only trophies that Murphy has are a few newspaper clippings and a nice little bank account. Even the gold medal awarded annually to the winner of the French Grand Prix, has not been received by Murphy although he swept the field in the foreign classic at Le Mans last July, in the most spectacular victory in the history of the motor racing sport. The French medal has not been awarded on account of the very strict laws regulating the shipment of gold between France and the United States; but the Automobile Club of France has offered to send the dies to Murphy in this country so that he may, at his own expense, have a medal struck off. The famous little speed merchant who is now tuning his Dusenberg up for the coming 250-mile race on the Los Angeles Speedway, scheduled for Feb. 22nd, has won other trophies but he has none in his possession. They have all been cups that must be won three times, and all that Murphy has is the satisfaction of knowing that his name is engraved on them as one of the winners. “Guess I’ll never get a cup,” said Jimmy, while working on his car out at the speedway. “I’ll never win one three times so I’ll have to be satisfied with having my name on them. “I was disappointed when I did not get the French Grand Prix medal, though. That would have meant a lot to me and I went up to get it a week after the race and was told that the directors of the Auto Club of France were to hold a meeting the next day, I returned to America and that is the last I have heard of the medal.” Murphy jumped into fame as the winner of the inaugural race on the Los Angeles Speedway in February, 1920. That was his third attempt as a driver, after graduating from the ranks of racing mechanics; and from that day he has been in every race held in America with the exception of two events staged here while he was in Europe winning the French Grand Prix. In all this string of speed battles he has never failed to finish in the money. This is a record that stamps him as one of the greatest of all speed kings and it is little wonder that he is already a favorite in the coming 250 mile Los Angeles race. Storm Bill Gordon, James, Rhinoceros, Drake and Schneider line up for Goodrum's Eckins and for the Jordan the line-up will be: Theodore, Holmes, Norstrom, Tranug and Steve. This is also a good match. Gas Co. team of Los Angeles by the score of 8 to 1 on the local high school field yesterday afternoon. The feature of the pastime was the superb pitching of Herb Salveson. This is the third time he has been in the box during the winter season and he looks better at each appearance. When Herb is right he does some mighty good chucking. Last season he seemed to have trouble at times. If he is in for a good season, local fans will be more than delighted. Schrott, the fast recruit left field from Brookhurst, connected with the onion for a home run. The ball certainly traveled. The Anaheim batting order was: Callahan, cf; Pendleton, ss; Stevens, Ist; G. Callian, 3; B. Callian, e; Thompson, rf; Schrott, lf; Salveson, p. The veteran Harry Hughes' grim vignage was not apparent yesterday because of a slight injury sustained in the oilfields. The local fans will be pleased to know it is not serious and that he will be in the game again, probably next Sunday. Manager Billy Knott today was not able to announce next Sunday's opposition—As soon as available, the fast negro team of Los Angeles will be brought down. STRANSKE BUILDING SIX-ROOM HOUSE A. Stranske is building a six-room house at 608 No. Philadelphia-st. He is planning to make his property there an attractive income proposition. This house will make room for three families and he plans another double house facing Alberfa-at. He is constructing four garages now. A. M. Morrison, contractor in charge of the work, will occupy the house now being completed. He will be prepared within a few weeks to make blue prints. Morrison, who came to Anaheim just June, has already done considerable building and has a number of other attractive jobs in sight. POMONA DEFEATS SAN PEDRO POMONA, Feb. 6.
