WORLD INFLUENCE COMING WESTWARD A retrospect and a forecast of American history were given to Kiwanis their uncheon today by the Rev. Rew Thomas H. Walker, pastor of the Presbyterian church, who in the course of his talk sharply rebuked those who would attack the constitution and undermine fundamental American institutions. The speaker said the sentiment of the founders of the republic had centered about their relief at being freed from the tyranny of old-world institutions, with opportunity for the enjoyment of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. "The center of world influence is to be shortly on the Pacific coast," he declared. Europe has lost its prestige and New York cannot retain it because New York is dependent upon Europe, continued the speaker. "An ounce of posterity is worth a pound of ancestry." The pastor told the story of "Dry Dollar" Sullivan and his conference with President Grover Cleveland, in the course of which Sullivan's well known remark, "What's the constitution between friends?" was uttered. Our children must be prepared for the opportunity of the next generation, he asserted. The boys of today will be the princes of tomorrow. Their duty to the future is more important than frozen oranges. The minister was one of several guests present at the gathering, which numbered about 56. Secretary G. R. Messias read communications reminding the club of the proposed observance of April 2-8, when the cordial relations between the United States and Canada will be dwelt upon. Canadian clubs will be asked to decide upon a United States Day and America upon a Canadian day, when the good feeling between the two countries, particularly as shown by the uninterrupted continuance of disarmament along the border line since the completion of disarmament negotiations in April, 1818. A communication was received from H. E. Wilson, chairman of the recreation committee of the River-side Kiwanis Club, suggesting that athletic relations be entered into between it and other clubs. The River-side club will be prepared to enter volleyball and basketball teams, art ball and playground ball. WHAT IS PLAN TO ATTAIN SALVATION At the White Temple Sunday morning, Dr. J. A. Geissinger preached upon the text, "What Must I Do to Be Saved?" from Acts 16:21. He said in part: I think the jailer was asking about salvation in the Christian sense of that word, but whether or not that is the case, certain it is that this question has become widely asked among men and women. What is salvation, And how do we find it? Salvation has come to be a vague term for us and the idea it represents may seem unreal. We can understand what it means to save a man from impending disaster, or from sorrow or depression, but salvation in the Christian sense does not seem as real as it did to our fathers and mothers. We have no trouble in understanding the salvation that comes to the drunkard or the debauche or the thief or the liar. Let these coarser sins point the way for us and help us to understand subtler sins. The whole world is in rebellion against God, if not by overt act, then by indifference or spiritual apathy. And man's problem lies deeper than our human remedies. The schools give us knowledge but after this man is still dissatisfied. Business can teach a man to make money but money does not satisfy. Ask the rich. We have a right to believe in music, in painting, in architecture, in all the arts, in culture. But man's problem lies deeper than these can reach. Are the poets at peace? Are the artists all satisfied? Are the literary geniuses content? A French philosopher looks forward to the time when there shall be a fowl in every peasant's pot. That is a much to be desired end; namely, that every man, woman and child shall have bread, and raiment and a roof to keep out the storm. But after a man has secured bread he still has need for the bread that does not perish but comes down from above. We think of the lodges as competitors of the churches. That is absurd. The lodges but minister to man's hunger for fraternity. They are good for man has need of friendship. But beyond this is man's hunger for God and the lodges know nothing about a salvation for there is only one name under heaven whereby a man may be saved. "He shall be called Jesus be." Wilson, chairman of the recreation committee of the River-side Kiwanis Club, suggesting that athletic relations be entered into between it and other clubs. The River-side club will be prepared to enter volleyball and basketball ball teams, art gall and playground balls in season. Forman F. Brown, secretary of the Buy City, Mich., club wrote Secretary Messias that David Jessurun had been present at the meeting of January 26. Senators Hiram A. Johnson and Samuel M. Shortridge wrote the secretary, acknowledging letter announcing that the club favored the Soldiers' Adjusted Compensation Bill. Johnson said he supported the bill last year and would do so again. Shortridge declared his belief that the current bill would be passed before the summer recess. The club, after a ballot, voted in favor of continuing to hold its meetings at the Union High School cafeteria. Charles Eygabroad reported that of the $40,000 sought for protection from high water, "nearly enough is in sight," though not actually subscribed. "I want to make special mention of Kiwanian," Fritz, he said—P. A. Yungbluth, Yungbluth, he said, brought in the largest sum of any district. This sum now has reached around $2500. A committee was appointed to interview Joseph H. Clayes regarding the repairing of the piano. HENRY A. BURDORF PASSES AWAY TODAY Henry Anton Burdorf died about 3 a.m. today at his home on Orange thorpe, after an illness of a few days. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., in the Backs & Terry chapel, Rev. Scmizerzer officiating. Mr. Burdorf was born in Hanover, Germany, Sept. 18, 1840, but left his native country for America in 1867, sailing around "the Horn," and landing in San Francisco. After a short while in the northern city he came south where he has since resided. In 1880 he returned to Germany for a visit, meeting there the girl who afterward became his wife, Dorothea, nee Wochler. They were parents of nine children, one, Mrs. Marie Hammerschmidt having preceded her father in death a few years. The remaining eight consists of two sons and six daughters. Deceased was a staunch member of Zion Lutheran church of Anaheim, and founder of Anaheim. High School News The Student Body assembled this morning to celebrate the coming of the new freshmen. President Ted Seims presided. In the absence of the secretary, Miss Agnes Harkness read the minutes of the last meeting. Mr. Seims gave a short speech of welcome to the new students and said briefly that they were now a part of the High School and they should cooperate in all the activities because sometime in the next two or three years they would be the leaders of the school life. Miss Harkness called on Frances Adams to tell the students of the work of the girl's self-government and the girls' league of which she is president. She told of the league party which would be held on this Friday in the new Gym rooms. The affair will be a get-acquainted party and all girls will miss the time of their lives if they make themselves noticeable by their absence. Bill Cook was then called on to talk about the functions of the boys' self-government. sailing around the Horn, and landing in San Francisco. Who will give me 50 for this beautiful white rose from the beautiful bouquet of a beautiful bride?" Someone offered 50; someone else made it 75 and the white rose from the bouquet of Minnie M. Curry went to the maximum bidder with the bride's blessing. All the other flowers of the bride's bouquet were auctioned off at the spiritualistic wedding of James F. Boyd and Minnie M. Curry. Bill Cook was then called on to tell about the functions of the boys' self-government. Gene McElheney read the rules and regulations as outlined by the self-government committees for the students to bear in mind. Other members of the self-government board are Art Mann, Clifford, Stewart, Gates and Margaret Briscoe. During the assembly hour songs and yells resounded thru the corridors. The football captain for next year will be chosen at a meeting of players and Coach Youngman the latter part of the week. A number of candidates are out and competition is keen. The many classmates of Al Clayes will be glad to see his smiling countenance around the campus again. Al has been at home with a very severe cold for a number of days. He returned to school again today. When one risks his life to save the life of another, that is heroism, and should be praised accordingly. THISTLE IS MENACE TO KANSAS CROPS MANHATTAN, Kan., — an. 31. Agriculturists are alarmed over the fact that another pest has been put in an appearance in Kansas and is threatening the 1922 wheat crop. It is the star thistle and has a penchant for spreading through wheat fields. The sample of the weed, which was sent to the Kansas State Agricultural college here, was forwarded to the agricultural department at Washington. Authorities identified it as the star thistle and declared it was a foreign invader. This flowering thistle has made its appearance in a number of widely separated states, according to agricultural experts.
