NO DULL MOMENTS WEDNESDAY EVENING Monate program—Grand theatre, Wednesday evening, Feb. 1. The comedy-drama, "The Professor's Diadem," augmented with a list of fine specialties. A continuous performance. A laugh in every line and a scream with each climax. Not a dull moment. Among the favorites who will appear on this occasion and who will introduce specialities between acts are Mrs. D. C. Denning in Spanish songs and on interpretation of the famous "Dance of the Torador." Mrs. Denning was formerly known as Dr. Belle Ruiz, originally form Barcelona, Spain. Mr. D. C. Denning is one of the best known entertainers in So Cal., and will give a fine line of rapid-fire comedy and musical numbers. Mr. Hirschel Clayton will be heard in a group of Irish melodies. Mr. Clayton is one of the leading baritones in So Cal. musical circles. These various specialties augmenting the comedy-drama, will make a monster program that one cannot afford to miss. The title role of the drama is taken by Mr. Henry G. Miller, who needs no introduction to the Anaheim public having appeared here in leading roles in many successful productions. Mr. Miller has a wide circle of friends and admirers. The following is the complete cast: Justinian Babbitt, Professor of Ancient History in the Camptown University, Mr. Henry G. Miller. Harry Damask, his son-in-law, Mr. O. H. Clayton. Jack Mulberry, a member of Marcus Brutus Snap's dramatic company, Mr. D. C. Denning. Lord Mulberry, in pursuit of Jack, Mr. W. E. Galbraith. Marcelus Brutus Snap, in pursuit of fame and fortune under various legitimate aliases, Mr. William Morton Rasmus. Mrs. Zantippa Babbitt, wife of Professor Babbitt, Mrs. William Morton Rasmus. Niobe the limn of the Babbitt FULLTIME Y. M. C. A. SECRETARY PLANNED One of the most important meetings of the year is to be held at 6:30 to-morrow night at the Y. M. C. A. building. The meeting is for the purpose of discussing a plan of organization of a community Y. M. C. A. and the employing of a full time secretary for Anaheim. The men on the local committee are unanimous in their opinion that this is the right policy for Anaheim, but before any more definite plans were gone into, they wished to get the consensus of opinion of the people of the community. Representatives from each of the different civic clubs and each of the churches are being brought together at a summer put on by the ladies of the M. E. church, the fellows of the Anaheim High club helping with the service. Harry O. Hill, state secretary of the Y. M. C. A., will be here as the chairman of the board of directors of the Whittier Y. M. C. A., to tell of the way the community type of Y. M. C. A. work is being carried on through the state. The man in Anaheim would be an associate county secretary doing community work in Anaheim, which would consist of a program of playground activities at the building for boys and girls and men, a co-operative program with the pastors of the churches with their organized boys classes as well as co-operating with the Boy Scout leaders in the promotion of their work. The success of the work would depend a good deal on the man secured, but with the men of the state staff backing us up and the men on the county staff assuming a definite responsibility in the promotion of the program once the man is on the job, a very helpful and successful piece of community work should be developed. ATTEMPTS SUICIDE; WANTS TO RECOVER "I don't want to die. I want to get well and make a new start. Is there any chance for me?" Do you think I am going to die? These questions propounded by University, Mr. Henry G. Miller, Harry Damask, his son-in-law, Mr. O. H. Clayton. Jack Mulberry, a member of Marcus Bruffa Snap's dramatic company, Mr. D. C. Denning. Lord Mulberry, in pursuit of Jack, Mr. W. E. Galbraith. Marcus Bruffa Snap, in pursuit of fame and fortune under various legitimate aliases, Mr. William Morton Rhammus. Mrs. Zantippa Babbitt, wife of Professor Babbitt, Mrs. William Morton Rhammus. Nisbe, the imp of the Babbitt household, Miss Frances Cleary. Angeles romantic wife of Harry Damask, Miss Clara Turton. Susanne, maid of the Babbitt household, Mrs. Wanda Bennett. Personal direction Mr. William Morton Rhammus. Musical selections — Overture, "Prince of Pilsen"; Intermissions, Popular Selections; March American Medleys. ANAHEIM BUILDING DEPARTMENT ACTIVE There is no let up in Anaheim building operations, despite the extensive inclement weather this month. The New Year to date has seen the issuance of 43 permits, totaling $82,-456. Provision is being made for living accommodations for an average of a family daily. Some very fine residences were started the last month. February's building total, it is expected, will greatly exceed that of this month, as several large buildings will be started in the next 30 days, including possibly the Arnold Kraemer building to cost $100,000. SPORTING EVENTS AWAITING LIGHTS IN ANAHEIM GYM. The boys basketball game scheduled with Franklin high on the local court Wednesday is postponed until a future date. The lights have not been put in the gym and practice is impossible. Anaheim will play another league game this week. The local 110 and 130-pounders will go to Orange Thursday for a game and the neighboring school will send their first team up to meet the Anaheim first on Friday. CITY LEAGUE TEAMS WILL BOWL TONIGHT Tonight four teams of the Anaheim City League will hit the maples at the local alleys. Harry Riley's Studebakers will meet Walter's. Jordans. Both team are out to win at least one tonight Kluewer's promotion of the program once the man is on the job, a very helpful and successful piece of community work should be developed. ATTEMPTS SUICIDE WANTS TO RECOVER "I don't want to die. I want to get well and make a new start. Is there any chance for me? Do you think I am going to die?" These questions, propounded by Thomas Edwards, 23, of Santa Ana were addressed to a night nurse in a Los Angeles hospital and followed an attempt on the part of Edwards to end his own life by swallowing mercury poison. Altho Edwards was hopeful of recovery, attendants at the Los Angeles county hospital were not optimistic concerning his chances. "Edwards is not as strong as he was yesterday," the attending nurse declared today. "He is conscious and able to talk coherently, but is growing weaker." He wanted to get well, and repeatedly asks if he is going to recover. We are making him as comfortable as possible, but I am afraid there isn't much hope." Edwards left his position in Santa Ana and went to Los Angeles. He was found unconscious in a hotel room, suffering from mercury poison and was rushed to the receiving hospital for emergency treatment. One of two letters that Edwards wrote before taking the poison was addressed to Miss Dorothy Chesley, 91½ East First street, Santa Anna. Mrs. Mary Chesley, of the same address, mother of the girl, today stated that her daughter had known Edwards only three or four months. The mother denied having prohibited Edwards from seeing her daughter offener than once a week and stated that the young people had not intended to be married. DON'T TURN COVER CROP BEFORE FEB. 15 Cover crops—clover, beans, vetch etc., should not be turned before the Feb. 15 to March 15, Manager G. W. Sandilands of the Anaheim Orange and Lemon Ass'n, warned this morning. He said he had noticed quite a good many growers turning the crops. These crops are for the purpose of concentrating nitrogen. If they are turned now, or at any other time when rains are copious, there is the danger of dissipating the nitrogen before it can be used to the trees. A week or two is required to release the nitrogen. After March 15 rains of any size are the exception. "GIVE A JOB WEEK" Price $4,500.00. Nicely furnished house near Palm-st. YORBA LINDA, Jan. 30.—(Spl.) The meeting of the A. C. C. held on Wednesday evening was not very well attended, which was an interesting one. The Y. L. Woman's club furnished a delicious chicken dinner during which music was furnished by Harry Kendricks and Mrs. Wm. G. Cochran. Talks by Mr. L. Wallace, Mr. D. Huff, Harry Riley, J. F. Ahlborn, and Engineer Shiveley of Pasadena. The ladies wish to thank all who helped to make the dinner successful, particularly Mr. Harry B. Riley, who to encourage them in their club house boost, started a donation, which including the proceeds from the dinner, netted the ladies about $100. Friends of Mr. "Eddie" Simmons who formerly readied here, will be shocked to learn of his death which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Julia Hawley of San Bernardino last week. The body was taken to Tombstone, Arizona, for burial. Mr. Simmons, who was of a jovial, kindly disposition, was perhaps about 65 years of age. He lived on his ranch, north of the Harold Brewer ranch, but moved away two years ago when he sold his property to Stanley S. Collins of Anaheim. Yorba Linda should get in and boost now! Mr. E. L. Gliman, manager of the Foothill Groves Packing house, after making a trip over the country says that Y. L. looks like a garden spot compared to other districts. There is not more than a 5% loss of lemons while the oranges are not injured at all. Twenty-six degrees was the lowest registered which was in the valley west of town and which is always the coldest. At the recent meeting of the directors of the water company, Mr. E. J. Herbert was elected president for the ensuing year, C. W. Morris, vice president, and Warrick Murray was re-elected secretary.
