LITTLE DAMAGE IN STANTON DISTRICT STANTON, Jan. 27.—(Spl.) The orange growers in the West Anaheim district seem very optimistic regarding the outcome of the recent cold snap. The Pierson Redmond and Harrison groves, the oldest in this section show little effects of frost. The younger orchards have stood it well. The city dads did not have to wait for the cold weather to put the pep in them. They have been up and doing, and the road committee has been looking after the bad pieces of road in various parts of the city. A good many miles of streets have been improved with grading and the application of gravel where needed the most to make the complete road in a passable condition. The county officials apparently have awakened and are starting in to complete their part of the good work on the roads leading out of the city on the south and we hope Mr. Wm. Schumacher will cast his weather eye unto the north end of Magnolia-ave from the school house to the Lincoln highway and see what he can do for the great number of citizens traveling that most promising thoroughfare. W. H. Kennedy Jr., is going to plant 20 acres of spuds this spring. The early cabbage is looking fine and some of the earliest is being cut now, three sidetracks being used this week, two at Stanton and one at Cordorniz. Mr. J. H. Klein, a recent arrival from Washington, who purchased the 10 acres on the southwest corner of Claire-st and Magnolia-ave, is putting down a well and excavating for a cellar and will soon have a house under way. Della M. Davis the city clerk has been appointed registrar and is prepared to take the names of voters in the city for the general spring election in April. W. W. Mother's bread was good—there's no doubt about it. You enjoyed eating the bread she produced. It was the best you could get then. It is different today. The bakers who make our bread are experts, carefully trained in that art. Our modern sanitary shop contains equipment which has made baking a science. With such a combination our bread is par excellence, and we believe, even better than Mother used to make. Buy Dresser's Bread, Pies, Cakes and Pastries Today. DRESSER'S WHITE LILY BAKERY 307 W. 'DEATH WATCH' BUGS ROUTED BY GAS LONDON, Jan. 27.—The "death watch" beetle is being fought with poison gas in the ancient Westminster hall, the scene of many memorable events in British history. The famous beamed roof of carved oak, dating from the year 1399, was discovered some time ago to be seriously menaced by the boarings of wood beetles, which had been breeding there for centuries. The first gas that was experimented with to kill the beetles nearly proved fatal to the cleaners. Then another chemical was tried, and this, it is claimed, will make the historic edifice safe for another six or seven centuries. As this gas is heavier than air, it penetrates into the lobbies of the adjacent house of commons, and it can, therefore, only be used when parliament is not sitting. GERMANY TRIES TO RAISE SILVER FOXES BERLIN, Jan. 27.—Germany has decided to make herself independent of American silver foxes and skunks by raising them on a farm. At Hirschegg, in a little valley in the German Tyrol, a large tract of land has been fenced off and a good stock of foxes has been bought. The foxes went mad when first let loose, but they have now tamed down and seemed to be living ordinary lives. The principal food is cat's meat, and the drain on the neighborhood cat life has proved so heavy that 50 marks apiece are now being paid. So far the attempt is still experimental. If it proves successful a batch of fine skunks will be imported. This is, so far as known, the first attempt to raise silver foxes in Europe, and the grey-beards of Hirschegg are a little skeptical. On Sundays they walk up the valley in little groups and stand near the stockade, gazing quizzically. FINLEY BUILDS BLOCK SANITARY FRED H. SCHNEIDER 116 E. They are not former soldiers loaded with cooties. It is something worse than cooties. An epidemic of the seven-year itch has broken out here and physicians declare there are hundreds of cases in the city. Urgent warnings have been sent out that the disease is very contagious. Hundreds of people have complained during the last three weeks of itching and they were of the opinion that it was caused by some article they had eaten. Many blamed tomatoes as the cause. When the disease had gained considerable headway and physicians were consulted it was diagnosed as the genuine seven-year itch. Groceries C. L. Holland 131 E.
