Elks Show Great Form. On High School Field
Anaheim Elks came back home to play ball yesterday, after an absence of two years. Judging from the increased attendance and the crop of base hits garnered on the Anaheim high school lot they should never more wander from the fold. It was a much better game than indicated by the score which was: Anaheim Elks, 20; Los Angeles Stars, 3.
Callahan first up for the locals, proceeded to dedicate the auspicious return to the home lot by pickling the first ball pitched by Tipton, the visitors crafty moundsman, for a line drive south by southeast for a home run. This is Callahan's second appearance in a local uniform. He looks mighty good at the bat, swinging thru on a line that must worry pitchers with valvular trouble. He got two hits in four times up, sacrificed once and scored twice yesterday.
CITY BRIEFSE
Mr. and Mrs. H. Clifford and two children, of Los Angeles, were guests yesterday with Mrs. Clifford's sister, Mrs. A. Alexander and family.
John Gilbert and sisters, the Misses Mary and Ruth Gilbert and their aunt, Mrs. Niver, all of Monrovia, drove to Anaheim yesterday to visit Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Baker, on West Broadway. The Gilberts lived on a ranch near here until about ten years ago.
It looked like a real ball game up to the fifth innning. The visitors scored one in the first inning and two more in the fourth, making the score at the fifth inning three to one in their favor. Then the locals, with two out, caught their stride. Tipton, who had been pitching gilded ball up to that time, walked Callahan and Pendleton. Gleun Calan cow-tailed one for four bags. Stevens followed with a three-bagger scoring on an error. This made the score five to three. In the sixth the locals tallied once more and in the seventh they counted four times. In the eighth was the slaughter of the lancents, the locals running in ten battles.
Manager Billy Knott was elated with the fine attendance at the high school field, despite the cooling breezes. There will be games each Sunday at the same place, with some of the fastest teams in Los Angeles.
Schrott, frisky left fielder for the locals, got only three hits out of five times up, scoring four runs yesterday. Otherwise, he didn't seem to be able to do much.

JACK, THE HATTER, BUYS TRUCK
Jack Smith, of Balboa, known all over So. Cal., as Jack, the Hatter, has purchased a Ford truck from the Dinton garage here and has mounted a house on it. With this outfit for shop and living quarters, Jack expects to cover much more territory with annual itinerary. He has been in the habit of going into a town and renting a storeroom where he would work for several weeks cleaning up all the sweat-stained sombreroes. Rents are getting too high how, where storerooms are available, to permit that.
APPLIED BY WHEEL
Brakes are applied to a new motor truck for use on railroads by what ordinarily would be the steering wheel for which there is no use on such vehicles.
Schrott, frisky left fielder for the locals, got only three hits out of five times up, scoring four runs yesterday. Otherwise, he didn't seem to be able to do much.

PERILS OF MIDDLE LIFE SERMON TOPIC
At the White Temple yesterday morning, Dr. Gelssinger spoke to a very large audience upon the "Peril of Middle Life." His texts were from the Old Testament and the New Testament: Pa. 91;6 and 1 Cor. 10:12.
The author of the Mirrors of Downing street insists that Lloyd George has lost his early idealism and love for humanity, that the prophet in him has died at the hands of the politician and that he is now bent on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saving himself father than his on saveiing himself father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father than his on saveiing himself Father tha

SIMONS REALTY COMPANY
There is the peril of failing idealism. Our enthusiasm often spends itself early and we come to the time when love grows cold, hope fades away and faith in God and man expires. Youth seeks to make life over, all things over, but soon he may be willing to let things have their way. We come to feel that there was much evil in the world before our time and will be after we are gone, and why should we take ourselves too seriously. Think if Christ had taken that attitude!
Then there is the peril of discouragement. This is one of the most frequent menaces of spiritual life. It is a trying moment when a man wakes up fully to the fact that he is a one-alent man or at the best a two-talented man and not a five or a ten! The mark of mediocrity is upon him and he must ever do his work in obscurity, unseen of men and un-acclaimed of the world. In the race he will never make a first, second or third. What then? Then let him finish the race where he is able, but above all things let him not fall out. God holds us responsible for doing what we can and not what we cannot. The supreme sin is laying our talent away in a napkin because we have not ten. The peril of over-confidence is at the opposite extreme. It besets the sifted those who success is easy, such men and women are often off guard and do not think that they leave any weakness. It is just to such that the apostle seems to be speaking, "Let him that standeth take need less he fall." It is when a man has made a place for himself that he is in danger from over-confidence. Oh the tragedies along this line! How many finely equipped men have you seen go down in the high noon of their lives, not because of any real need but because of the unguarded gates!
Perhaps the fundamental peril is that of forgetting God. Here is a lad of high faith and beautiful piety. He seems to be a spiritual genius and here you see him twenty or thirty years later. He has lost the believing heart. He has wandered away from the faith of his childhood. Little by little the spirit of unconcern has crept over him. He has dropped out of the church. He has given up his study of the word. He has none but an abandoned altar. God has left him or he has abandoned God, tho "he wist it not." Daniel prayed three times a day, lifting his life with its cares to God. In such a practice there is safety and in no other.
