Every man should have a self-controlling interest in himself. The libelous lie is industrious, keen to go and a speed-breaker when it gets started. The more good business that is put into government, the better the quality of the governing. One way soon to become flabby in moral courage is to begin systematically to shirk duties. Plant a garden, if for no other reason than the pleasure you will get from watching it grow. Cultivate enthusiasm. No great work is done that is not seasoned with enthusiasm in the doing of it. There are two constitutions that no man should break — the United States constitution and his own. There are musicians and musicians. Some can get more real music out of a Jew's-harp than others can get out of a grand piano. Yes, the Arms Conference is a failure—from the standpoint of those who, for one reason or another, want to see the world kept on the brink of war. Those who debonairly are predicting failure for the work of the Arms Conference would rejoice if their predictions came true. But they will have no occasion to pollish on this score—the conference will not fail in its work. There should be no class distinction in cases of crime and vice. Crime is crime and vice is vice, whether those guilty are rich or poor, prominent or obscure. It is the quality of THE CYNICS ARE SKEPTICAL ABOUT PEACE The cynics profess to see nothing to these world-peace movements. Imitating the muck-raker in "Pilgrim's Progress," they continue to rake the muck of the past, and to look down, obstinately refusing to lift their eyes toward the heavens where the sunrise of a new day is gleaming. "There always have been wars, and there always will be," is the favorite last-word of the cynics. "You can't change human nature," they say. "There is bound to be war at intervals, so long as the world stands." And thus they wallow in the muck of the past and stolldry refuse to desyder the signs of better times written all over the earth. If all mankind adopted the cynical, pessimistic, skeptical attitude about world peace, there would be no permanent peace. But, thank heaven, the masses of the people of all civilized lands believe that peace is possible and they yearn for it. And the brainiest statesmen in the world today are sincerely for peace, and are striving, in practical ways, to lay the foundations for an enduring pacifiction, grounded upon justice and square dealing among nations. Because there have been wars in the past is no absolute surety that wars will mark the future, any more than the fact that tallow candles once were in general use was surety that no other and better lights could be or would be devised. The world is tearing away from its old systems and practices. Note the work of the Arms Conference. No such frank, straightforward, direct brand of diplomacy ever before was witnessed in an assemblage of that nature. Note what actually has been done there. Can any open-minded, unprejudiced person contemplate the naval holiday and the four-power agreement and not be impressed profoundly with the fact that the world rapidly is moving... Those who debonairly are predicting failure for the work of the Arms Conference would rejoice if their predictions came true. But they will have no occasion to pollify on this score—the conference will not fall in its work. There should be no class distinction in cases of crime and vice. Crime is crime and vice is vice, whether those guilty are rich or poor, prominent or obscure. It is the quality of the deed, not the station of the doer, that should be indulged.
