MANY NEW TOUCHES
TO MISSION PLAY
The glory of Old Spain, the somber robes of the Franciscan padres, the indomitable Fra Junipero Serra himself, re-incarnate in the person of Frederick Warde, acclaimed as probably the most illustrious exponent of the drama of the present day, state-by-state chieftains and winsome maidens of the Cahuillia's, favored tribe of the California Mission Indians, dazzling senoritas and gay caballeros passed in review Saturday afternoon as the pages of California's picturesque history were turned back a hundred and fifty years and John Steven McGroarty's Mission Play opened for its eleventh season at the San Gabriel Playhouse in the shadow of Old San Gabriel Mission.
It seemed as though every member of the great audience which thronged that picturesque playhouse, more like a cathedral of a century agone than a theatre forgot the present to relieve again the days of old, thrilled with the powerful, vibrating voice of Warde whose masterful interpretation of Serra strikes every chord of human emotions and awed by the unbounded fulfillment of Junipero's last prayer.
"Bring to the foot of thy Cross these wild Gentiles of the plains and hills. Bless this dear land of California and all its people now and in the centuries to come."
Many new historic and artistic touches have been added to the play by Mr. McGroarty, who has just returned from an especial trip made to Spain for the purpose of studying in the archives of Madrid the pages of California's early history. One of these is the "Espana", a harmony wierdly beautiful supplied by a strange instrument, re-invented by Rosendo Iturbide, played by himself and accompanied by Meta Kreycher—Pan with his pipes—the poetry of primitive man articulate.

CORN BELT MOVES TO NORTHWARD
WINNIPEG, Man., Jan. 14. The corn belt is moving northward. This is an interesting agricultural development in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
"The cornfields to be seen in western Canada this year," said R. J. C. Stead of the department of immigration, who recently made an extensive trip through three provinces, "equal any to be found in the east or south. The growing of corn has made great headway in this region in the last few years." The development of corn adapted to a northern climate has made ear corn a large crop.
Under water in the great irrigated sections of southern Alberta, Dent corn yields 60 bushels to the acre. Sweet corn yields 1,000 dozen to the acre, which at an average of 20 cents a dozen, is $300 an acre.
DELA SUIT OVER TITLE
Hearing on the demurrer of the Santa Ana board of education to the suit of W. J. Bryant involving the title to two lots occupied by the Franklin school building in Santa Ana, had again been continued today, this time to January 22 at 10 a.m. This marked the third delay of the action in court for the purpose, it is understood, of effecting a compromise.
HELD FOR TRIAL ON NEGLECT CHARGE
Harry C. Calkins was held to answer by Justice J. B. Cox on a charge of failure to provide for two minor children. He was at liberty while awaiting trial in superior court, under $500 ball, which had been previously posted.
It was shown in court Calkins had violated an order recently issued when his wife was granted a divorce in the superior courant that he pay $50 a month for the support of his wife's children, who are in the custody of her parents.
Calkins made the defense that inasmuch as the children were being cared for elsewhere he was not required to look after their welfare.
"Liza, I hears 'at yoh daughter's church weddin' was some sho' nuff skrumpahus function."
"I'll say 'twas. At 'ere gal ob mine flang a wicked nuptial.'—Exchange.
