WEDNESDAY, January 11, 1922 THE ORANGE SPORTING EVENTS CHICAGO WRESTLER DOESN'T LAST LONG Joe Somizo, a wrestler hailing from the wilds of Chicago and thereabouts, met his Waterloo last night at the Grand Theatre at the hands of Al Sparkes, the local strong boy, in two straight falls. Sparkes gained the first fall in the short time of nine minutes and three seconds by a body Nelson while the next and deciding one, come in ten minutes and eleven seconds. The match was a brief but snappy one while it lasted. In justice to the eastern man, it must be stated that he did not put up his usual good brand of mat work on account of lack of condition, due to the fact that he was pressed into service almost at the last moment to substitute for Roy Mabee on account of injury to Mabee's hand, sustained in training last Sunday. Sparkes showed up like a million against his opponent last night, and those who attended the affair are free in their prediction that when Roy and Al do finally get together, it is going to be a hair-raising fracas. One thing certain, Mabee will have his hands full with the husky farmer boy if last night's doings can be taken as a sample of Sparkes' true form. The way he tore into the 'Rassler' from the Windy City right from the start was highly pleasing to his many friends and admirers. The big majority of them, no doubt, will place Sparkes the big favorite over Mabee when they do finally clash. No date has as yet been set as that will depend upon just how soon the Cypress man's hand will heal sufficiently enough for him to resume training. Possibly about the end of the month would be a safe prediction to make. ELKS ATTEMPT TO PLAY BALL AGAIN Still another attempt will be made to stage a ball game Sunday, Manager Billy Knott of the Anaheim Elks team announced today. The same opposition as scheduled for last Sunday, the fast B. H. Dyas & Co. team, of Los Angeles, has been arranged. Altho last Sunday saw some beautiful weather, the rain of Friday night had left the outfield in poor condition. Knott is firmly of the opinion that the streak of unfavorable weather is over with and that a regular schedule can be maintained. He has received word that Riverside Elks are anxious to take on the 1921 state champions and a game will probably be arranged for a week from Sunday. 2 SALESMEN ADDED BY PAIGE AGENCY W. B. Store to purchase winter goods, especially in the ready-to-wear department, at marked reductions from previous prices. Owing to the unusually large Christmas trade, said Manager A. H. Renner, there is an unusual amount of broken lines from which to select. The store is determined to clear out winter garments and goods to make room for spring lines, some of which already are on the way. Never have better post-holiday values been offered by the store. The concern is endeavoring to keep pace with the growth of the city in the volume of stocks offered and service given. DENVER MAN OPENS SHOE REPAIR SHOP W. H. Webb, who claims to be the first man west of Chicago to install machinery in a shoe repair shop, has come here from Denver and opened a shop at 250 East Center-st, corner of Philadelphia. In Denver he was in the shoe business for 25 years. He says Anaheim offered the best opportunity of any city in this part of the country. The new shop is thoroughly up-to-date in equipment and capable of the finest and most difficult repair work. Prices will be at the market scale. COMBINE CLEARANCE SALE, WHITE FAIR The season's clearance sale and the semi-annual White Fair are being combined this year at the sale which opens at Falkenstein's tomorrow. Not only are the remainder of the winter stocks being offered, but immense quantities of new merchandise, at very special prices. IMPLICATES 3 BUT FACES TRIAL ALONE Jose Murrieta had a solitary role, instead of rounding out a quartette, when he appeared before Justice J. B. Cox this afternoon for an examination on a charge of burglary. All members of the gang who participated in the Mexican "dream weed burglary" attempt at the Prince dry goods store in Anaheim recently are in custody, but Murrieta, who was captured at the time, is the lone representative of the ring to face prosecution here. The other three, although they were later captured by Orange-co officers, are now held by the San Diego authorities. The reason they are in San Diego is twofold—Murrieta's alleged concession to Sheriff C. E. Jackson implicated his companions too late for Jackson to hold the men, whom he had just arrested and turned over to San Diego. San Diego officer now decline to turn them back for good and sufficient reasons of their own, those reasons having to do with the burglary of the Huffman clothing store at Escondido shortly after the "dream weed" attempt in Anaheim. The "dream weed" attempt gains its name from the fact that Anaheim police officers, Choate and Moody, found a can of Marijuana in a car driven by Murrieta. San Diego officers flow decline to turn them back for good and sufficient reasons of their own, those reasons having to do with the burglary of the Huffman clothing store at Escondido shortly after the "dream weed" attempt in Andean. The "dream weed" attempt gains its name from the fact that Anaheli police officers, Choate and Moody, found a can of Marijuana in a car driven by Murrieta, whom they pursued for a mile from the Prince store before capturing him. In this forbidden weed, production of which is prohibited by law, they believed they saw the inspiration for the ring's criminal activities. Three confederates who were tooling the store when the officers sighted Murrieta and pursued him, escaped safely, but abandoned about $5,000 worth of loot which was later found near the store. A few days afterward Sheriff Jackson and his deputies raided a billiard hall at Delhi and arrested 13 Mexicans on a gambling charge. They were brought before Justice J. B. Cox where some were found guilty and some were not. The latter were released. Among them was one named Anton Marriaz. Three hours after Marriaz had been given his liberty Jackson arrested him on request of the San Diego authorities, in connection with the Escondido burglary. At the same time, Mike Rivera, of Garden Grove, and a third Mexican were arrested. All three were sent to San Diego. Very soon afterward Murrieta decided to confess. He named Marriaz, Rivera and a third Mexican, whose name he did not know, as his companions in the attempt on the Prince store. By that time, however, the San Diego authorities felt that they had a clear cut case against their prisoners. They preferred not to yield them to Orange-co. The Huffman store at Escondido, owned by a former Santa Ana business man, was entered one Saturday night and was robbed of a quantity of clothing. Early Sunday morning an automobile overturned on the Irvine-bird and skilled a bundle of Escondido clothing, together with Marriaz, Rivera and a third Mexican out on the ground. The car was towed to Tustin garage and the Mexicans came on to Santa Ana, caching the clothing at a certain spot in this city. It was recovered after their arrest and is expected to prove strong evidence against them. Meanwhile—Murrieta alone will face prosecution in Orange-co.
