Tuesday, January 10, 1922 SPORTING EVENTS FOOTBALL PLAYERS DINE FRIDAY, 13TH Is Friday the thirteenth unlucky? That's the big question in the minds of the football players of Orange co. The answer is "yes" for those whose appetite may be poor on that date, for they are going to lose out on the big banquet given by the Excelsior Creamery Co., to the high school football players of Orange co. The season may be over as far as actual playing is concerned, but the thirteenth is going to see the fighting over of many of the toughest grid iron battles. Veterans who battled fiercely against one another in the contention for Orange co. League honors are going to sit down together and peacefully fight over the battles of the season, and at the same time partake of the finest banquet the chief at Saint Anne's Inn can get together. The Excelsior Creamery Co. is a great believer in all sort of athletics. In fact there is hardly a football game takes place that does not see "Charlie" Heil, president of the concern sitting on the bleachers. They say that after the San Diego game he lost his voice and was not able to speak for two days. This Banquet is given by the Creamery Co. as a token of their appreciation to the athletes of the chalked field who have made Orange co. stand for the best in football. All the teams in the county have been invited, as well as coaches, coaches and trainers from the nearby colleges have been invited and many have accepted. It is to be a wet banquet, as a carload of milk has been especially set aside for the night. FULLERTON CASABA LONDOS WILL MEET SPARKES TONIGHT Roy Mabee will be unable to keep his scheduled date and wrestle Al Sparkes at the Grand Theatre tonight. His hand, which he severely injured in training Sunday, is no better. In fact, it appears to be worse in spite of all that could be done. It has swollen to twice its normal size. Rather than take chances in going on and putting up a poor showing and not doing himself justice as well as the public, Manager Billy Darnley shot that he would give a show anyway, to a good wrestler by the name of Young Londos, who claims to be a brother of Jim Londos, the well known heavyweight wrestler, will take Mabee's place and wrestle Sparkes. The same rules will govern, namely, catch as catch can, best two out of three falls to a finish. Londos has a good rep, having met and defeated some good men in particular around the middle west. He stayed almost two hours with Bull Montana and only was declared the loser when Montana had secured the third and deciding fall after a hard and fast tussel. He will be outweighed a trifle by the local man, but as weight cuts very little figure in the wrestling game, it is not that that will be of any disadvantage for him. He is a strong, clever heady performer and the local strong boy will have to "go some" to put anything over on him if he lives up to his past record. Al is in good trim and just 'rarin' to go. So with two good preliminaries down on the bill as well as the feature bout an A1 evening of sport seems assured. Ladies are especially invited to attend. The first preliminary will be called at 8:30 sharp. NEW TODAY GIRL wishes employm kind. Phone 239-W. FOR RENT — Furnish room, 407 S. Los Angle 283. WANTED—Girl wants kind, R. BUDDHIST “Y” TO EXTEND ACTIVITIES TOKIO, Jan. 9.—If Kipling had it all to do over again he might have to revise his line about "East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet." They're meeting so much these days that sometimes they're pretty well mixed. For example, one of the oldest religions of the East is all spruced up in a nifty new garb that asks no odds of its Western model. The Buddhists have gone into the "Y" business. Theirs is a "Y. M. B. A."—Young-Men's Buddhist Association—instead of a Y. M. C. A. It's going good, too. It's putting over the self-same attractions and advantages the "other" Y offered with a background of Buddhism in lieu of Christianity. BRAZIL PREPARING BIG CENTENNIAL RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 10. Preparations for the Brazilian Centenary exposition are being rush and there is every indication that the great exposition grounds will be ready to open next September, as planned. Thousands of workmen are toiling on Morro do Castello—a large clay mountain in the center of the city. A section of the historic old mountain upon whose sides were built the first settlements of the capital, already has been removed—the earth being used to fill in a part of Guanabara Bay, thus providing extra space for the exposition grounds. So far the work has been done largely with steam shovels, the earth being carted to the bay by a specially built railway. It is planned to complete the job; however, with hydraulic pressure, washing the clay does littleeways into the bay. American engineers are consulting with Brazilian contractors to arrange plan.
