NEWS OF FULLERTON PACKING HOUSES WORKING ON NAVELS All the packing houses of Fullerton with the exception of the American Fruit Growers, Inc., are packing navels this week. The American Fruit Growers Inc., are still devoting their time to the shipping of cauliflower. It was stated at the Benchley Fruit Co. that the crop is rather short for this season of the year because so many oranges were packed before New Year's. The crop was also damaged somewhat by the storm, many of the navels being blown onto the ground. They expect to clean up early this year. The Placentia Orange Growers' Ass'n started packing this morning. They packed some Saturday. The Mutual Orange Growers' Ass'n have been packing for some time, and are still packing with full force. They expect a good season. ILLUSTRATED LECTURE Col. E. A. Havers gave an illustrated lecture this afternoon to 425 pupils at the Fullerton grammar school auditorium on "Is the pen mightier than the sword?" He endeavored to prove that it is. ENROLLMENT TOTALS 1027 The enrollment in the Fullerton grammar school, including the kindergarten, now totals 1027, it was stated this morning by C. A. Marcey, principal. FIGHTING PARSON SPEAKS "The fighting parson," Bob Schuler of Los Angeles, formerly of Texas, will speak tonight at the First Methodist church of Fullerton. BUENA PARK GIRL STRUCK BY MOTOR Miss Dorothy Muirhead of Buena Park was brot to the Fullerton hospital last evening suffering from an accident on the highway, having been run down by a motorist. She suffered a broken nose, and a laceration about the forehead and other minor injuries. VAGS MUST KEEP ON MOVE THESE DAYS Judge French had a very busy session in the Fullerton police court this morning, while it lasted. He has begun to make himself extremely unpopular with vagrants, Saturday having sent nine to Santa Ana for 30 days in a batch. He slightened up a bit this morning, however, sending but five. The unfortunates were: Jesus Marena, E. Ramerez, Jess M. Gutry, Eprmenio Mandeya, and Horton Verack. Those sent over Saturday were: John Chariton, Herman Heltz, Jesus Puta, Francisco Rios, O. B. Buntaamon, J. L. McAvoy, E. J. Pineault, Frank Parker and W. C. Gilbert. WHITE SHRINE INSTALLATION This evening a number from Fullerton will attend the White Shrine installation at Pasadena, among them, will be Mrs. A. H. Bradford, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Lightfoot, Mrs. C. L. Garrison Mrs. L. W. Potter, Mrs. Wishion, Miss Helen Wishard, Mrs Reynolds, Miss Almes, Miss Colton, and Mrs. Yaeger. Marshall of Fullerton drove to Ontario Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hale of Placetta are rejoicing over the arrival of a brand new boy at the Fullerton hospital. Mrs. C. H. Warrington of Fullerton underwent an operation today at the Fullerton hospital. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Ames and little daughter drove to Corona and Riverside yesterday where they visited friends. Wednesday afternoon the Woman's club will meet at the home of Mrs. J. R. Gallimore, 419 West Commonwealth-ave. Wednesday evening the White Shrine of Fullerton will install their officers. Tuesday evening the Brotherhood of the Methodist church will have a banquet in the Recreation hall. Mr. R. A. Evans spent yesterday in Riverside. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Haver spent yesterday at Santa Ana visiting Mrs. Haver's brother, Mr. M. Babbitt and family. There was also several old friends of both families present, so a very enjoyable day was spent. Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Perkins and little daughter, Norma Lucille, accompanied by Mrs. Perkins' mother, Mrs. E. D. Bell, and sister, Miss Laura Bell, of Long Beach, left this morning for Visalia, where they will visit a week with Mr. and Mrs. William Arnin and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bell. Mr. Perkins is senior member of the Milk Bottle bakery department. Mr. and Mrs. H. Jordan motored to Huntington Beach yesterday. Mr. J. G. Sargent of Brea, and Mr. Frank Proud of La Habra, left this morning for Imperial valley on LARGE ATTENDANCE AT VET'S FUNERAL Funeral services for the late Private Howard Thornton, of Artesia, held in the Seale funeral chapel Saturday afternoon, were attended by a gathering of people which filled the chapel and office and overflowed on to the lawn. The business section of the city closed during the funeral, as was the case out at the boy's home town of Artesia, the attendance from the latter place being very general. Organizations attending in a body were the American Legion posts of Brea and Fullerton; members of Fullerton Post, G. A. R.; Daughters of Veterans and the W.R.C., of Fullerton and the Odd Fellows lodge of Artesia. Rev. Horn, pastor of the Methodist church at Artesia, gave the funeral address in a thoughtful and impressive discourse, in which he paid high tribute to the worth of deceased as a man and to his record as a soldier. Miss Sylvia Gladstone sang the hymns, with Miss Ruth Peschal assisting as accompanist. There was a wonderful array of flowers, including handsome pieces sent by Brea Post, American Legion; Fullerton Post, American Legion; Artesia Odd Fellows; Redlands Odd Fellows, the community of Artesia, Daughters of Veterans; W.R.C., W.C.T.U., and American Red Cross. Members of Brea Post served as poll bearers, being comrades Hurst, Renfrow, Burns, Whiteside, Fiscus, Hoppe and Fordham. The color-bearers were Fred Fuller and Frank Taylor, of Fullerton Post, and the color-guard was composed of Captain Walter Franz and Samuel Knox, also of Fullerton Post. The escort marched down Spadrard and thru Commonwealth-ave to Malden-ave, where machines were taken for the Artesia cemetery. BURCH CASE TO JURY BY END OF THIS WEEK LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9.-With the defense expecting a disagreement and the prosecution a verdict of conviction, the case of Arthur C. Burch, on trial for the murder of J. Belton Kennedy, will go to the jury either Friday or Saturday, attorneys for both sides predicted today. Final arguments to the jury, it was stated, will begin Wednesday at the completion of the prosecution's rebuttal testimony. While defense attorneys contend that a verdict of acquittal by the evidence they expect a disagreement of the jury, with the majority in favor of acquittal. As the case now stands, they figure eight jurors are for acquittal, two doubtful and two for conviction. On the other hand, the prosecution believes that, as the case now stands, 11 jurors are for conviction and one for acquittal. It was reported today that as the case nears completion Burch is beginning to show signs ofmboseness. Attendants at the county jail stated that he appears despondent and that Mr. and Mrs. H. Jordan motored to Huntington Beach yesterday. Mrs. J. G. Sargent of Brea, and Mr. Frank Proud of La Habra, left this morning for Imperial valley on a duck hunting trip. The Guilla of the Congregational church of Brea will meet Wednesday afternoon in the church parlor to elect officers for the new year. The ladies of the Congregational church of Brea will serve a dinner this evening to the C. of C. in the new Craig hall. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Haver and Mr. and Mrs. M. Babbitt of Santa Ana will go to Los Angeles tomorrow evening to a musical given by the Ellis club of which Mr. Babbitt is a member. EBELL PROGRAM JAN. 13 The dramatic section of the Ebell club will put on a program Friday evening, Jan. 13 at 8 o'clock in the Fullerton high school auditorium. The program will consist of three playlets, namely "Ashes of Roses" "Neighbors" and "Fourteen". The cast is comprised of local talent and the proceeds will go toward their new club house. CHARGED WITH SPEEDING A charge of speeding was filed with the district attorney today by H. S. Warner, traffic officer, against J. A. Valentine on the Anaheimblvd. Witman, Eyesight Specialist. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PARTY The birthday of little Roger Dupuy on Jan. 6 was the inspiration for a birthday party, in honor of his seventh birthday. A pretty cake with seven candles centered the table. After the excitement of blowing out the candles, the cake was cut and served with ice cream to a small but merry company of friends. GRANTS DIVORCE DECREES Interlocutory decrees of divorce had been granted today to Emil Stoffel from Reyes Stoffel, of San Juan Capistrano, and to Grace E. Garrison from Lloyd Garrison, of Anaheim. Beebe of Anaheim attended the Los Angeles Realty Board meeting Saturday in the Athletic club building in Los Angeles. Delegates were present from towns between Santa Barbara and San Diego. There were a number of eloquent speakers and a big banquet. The local realty men extended to C. C. C. Tatum and P. O. Vickory of Los Angeles; George Barber, president of the Long Beach Realty Board; Mr. Mulholland of Long Beach, and Mr. White and several other members of the Santa Ana realty board invitations to speak at the meeting of the local realty board tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock at the C. of C. headquarters on N. Los Angeles-st. The invitations were accepted, and these prominent realtors expect to be here. Mr. Stewart states it will be worthwhile for all the real estate men in Anaheim to attend the meeting at the C. of C. headquarters tomorrow night. There will be a tamale feed.
