In celebrating that naval holiday, China might furnish the firecrackers.

Los Angeles county is the richest county in the state. Is it keeping this fact quiet and hidden? It is not!
Rainfall in California at this season, has the similitude of silver and gold. It literally is worth millions to the state.
Men want friendship as dependable as the racks upon which they hang their hats, and as undevlating in place when needed, as is the hat-rack.
But possibly France asked a great deal from the Arms Conference as her ratio of naval armament, so that she could have the pleasure of scaling down her demands gracefully.
California has room for 30,000,000 population. If the whole state should grow as fast as some enthusiastic cities seem to think they are, the whole 20,000,000 should be here after 1930.
CLASS DIVISIONS ARE VERY UNFORTUNATE
It is unfortunate that a spirit of distrust has arisen as between some of the agricultural counties of the state and the counties which have large cities within their bounds. This is leading to an effort to curtail the representation of cities in the upper branch of the state legislature. As to the wisdom and equitableness of this, there is difference of opinion. The granger counties apparently argue that there should be no more than one state senator from each county, on the same basis that each state of the Union has a fixed number of senators—two—regardless of the size of population of the state. The urban counties, however, contend that representation in the legislature should be based upon population, and not merely upon territorial bounds. This issue may come before the people erelong for their verdict.
One or more of the big cities of the state may have given the farming counties provocation to take the stand they have. Whatever produces suspicion, jealousy and bitter distrust between the rural parts of the state and the centers of population is mischievous. It is a form of class consciousness which is deplorable and harmful, just as are other forms of class feeling and class distinction.

RIVER PROTECTION
The Plain Dealer:
Now that our record-breaking rain appears to be over and we are permitted to "come out from under," it may be well to take a look around to see what the results of the prolonged downpour have been. Although it may not appear at the surface, the writer firmly believes that one of the biggest blessings of this rain was the fact that the high waters caused the river to once more leave its channel and flow through the Anaheim district. That is, it will have been a blessing in solar as the flood will cause the people of Anaheim and vicinity to realize their danger and take immediate steps to effectively prevent the recurrence of such a misdemeanor on the river's part. It is very fortunate that this break occurred at a time when the river was at a comparatively low stage. What would the damages have been had there been the same flow that we had in 1916?
While the high water of the past storm was not of sufficient volume to constitute a fair test of the Garden Grove protection wall, there were times when a sufficiently large porch of the stream concentrated upon a certain point of this bank to allow one to form a fair estimate as to what the action of a real flood would be. The writer understands that Anaheim intends to install a protective wall similar to that used by Garden Grove. It is to be hoped that the men at the head of this project go our sister town one better by setting a row of willow curtains between the row of piling and bank proper. These are easily started and once full grown are a tremendous help in protecting the bank. Anyone doubting this statement is asked to take a look at the banks of the river just south of the West Chapman avenue bridge a short distance of the County hospital. Those willows speak for themselves to anyone who is wideawake enough to listen.—C. F. W. R.

New York Letter by Lucy Jaume Price
While I'm boasting a bit about my sex, I can mention that another woman has found a place in the business world of man's creation here in New York. Miss Nora MacLaren, real estate broker of Washington Square, has just received notification of her election to the real estate board of New York City—which is no small honor. She is the second woman recognized in this manner by the board.
Such commonplace and as romantic figures and objects do sometimes reach! A lighthouse to me always is touched with the adventurous and the picturesque more than anything else in the world. And here out at Rockaway Beach stands one serving the most commonplace workday purpose imaginable. By some freak of building operations, ore perhaps sentiment on the part of some landowners, it was left standing after it had long out-lived its usefulness and is now hemmed in by hotels and cottages so as to be hidden from view. Children use, it as a playhouse, and what is much worse, its tower is the central point from which are strung countless clotheslines from the surrounding houses!
I am beginning to understand how it is that the Armenian race continues to exist at all after what it has been thru so many times. Maryan Bedrossian and Jernik Derrrian, Armenian girls of 23 and 22 years of age, arrived at Ellis Island the other day seeking for the second time admission to America. They came over last September but were refused admission because the quota was already filled for their race that month. So they were transported back across the sea, waited until they had money great mahogany desk at 18 East Forty-first at, and handles practically all the details of the Commonwealth Hotel Construction corporation, the great $15,000,000 co-operative organization which is building the hotel. Since 1917, Mrs. Merrill has been on the job and during these years has recorded and kept track of more than 27,000 persons, all part-owners in the hotel, whose subscriptions total more than $5,000,000. All the important documents are in her charge, all literature of the corporatoin must receive her final o. k. before it is sent out, and all correspondence is handled by her before the most vital of it reaches the desk of W. J. Hoggson, chief executive of the enterprise. Considerable of a job for a woman—or a man! And Mrs. Merrill certainly carries it through. When she was asked how she did it, she explained quite simply "Oh, there's no mystery about it," she said.
"When I started in business, I made it my rule to obey orders and carry them out to the best of my ability. That's all there is to it."
CAPISTRANO CLIMB SET FOR APRIL 9TH
Sunday, April 9, 1922.
This is the date for the big annual "hill of the thrills" event at San Juan Capistrano — the annual motorcycle hill-climb at the famous hill on the Forster property along the coast highway near Serra.
The Orange-co Motorcycle club, under whose auspices the event is again to be run, selected, the date at its last meeting, with Sunday, April 16, named as the rain date.
It is expected that many of the crack riders of the West will participate as they have in the past. It also is expected that Dudley Perkins, who won free-for-all event last year, will again be among those who will contend for the honor of driving their mounts over the top of the hill. The 75 per cent grade adds zest to the contest and is responsible for the hill being called the "hill of thrills."

Mary-an Bedrossian and Jernik Derrrian, Armenian girls of 23 and 22 years of age, arrived at Ellis Island the other day seeking for the second time admission to America. They came over last September but were refused admission because the quota was already filled for their race that month. So they were transported back across the sea, waited until they had money and courage to try it again, and here they are after 6,000 miles of additional travel, asking once more for entrance. Persistance like that could well keep a race alive under persecutions.
The Battery is accustomed to a wide field of strange sights and sounds. It is a gathering place for sailors from all parts of the world and for those with whom they congregate when they touch our shores. But even the battery was aroused to interest the other day when from somewhere in the air above its benches and sea wall came a hoarse cry. "Have some coffee! Have some coffee!" Finally the source of the wall was discovered In the topmost branch of the tallest tree of Battery Park was perched Polly, a pet parrot escaped from the Broad-st hospital a few blocks away. A reward of $5 was offered for the recovery of the wanderer and every urchin in the park proceeded to wear out his trousers in an effort to climb the tree. After 24 hours of mournful freedom and incessant appeals to "Have some coffee," Polly left her perch of her own free will and found her way back to her hospital cage.
Is it true after al that New York City is less domestic than the rest of the country? I've always denied that charge, but the figures seem turning against me. Elsewhere in these United States, more people are being married this year than ever before, while here in the metropolis, times are duller than usual for license clerks and ministers. Government statisticians concluded that 1921 would be a record-breaker for weddings, and they are being proved correct—except for New York. Our city's record will show at least 3,000 fewer marriages for this year than in 1919 or 1920. Cost of living? That's high in other parts of the country, too. Home shortage, may-be. Anyway the fact remains that only 56,501 licenses were issued to November first against 59,065 up to the same date last year.

FATAL TO TWENTY
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9.—Bootleg whisky, bay rum, Jamaica ginger and patent medicines, took a heavy toll of lives during the year of 1921, it was declared in a report made public by the city's health department today. Death lurked for 20 Los Angeles men and women in bogus booze peddled by bootleggers in the city during the 12 months ending Dec. 31, the report declares.
The report was compiled from the records of the receiving hospital, the county hospital and the coroner's office. Wood alcohol brot, about the untimely arrival of the grim reaper for 12 persons, and eight other lives were the toll of painache ginger, bay rum and patent medicine.

PIPE SMOKING IN
PARIS FOR WOMEN
PARIS, Jan. 9.—The fashion of pipe smoking for women may not be said to be growing by leaps and bounds in France, but it certainly is going adherents.
Only a few nights ago a beautiful girl in evening dress and with glittering array of diamonds sat, throut an entire evening smoking a long black pipe in Maxim's famous restaurant. When she arose to dance one of her two male escorts looked after the pipe. She frequently re-filled the bowl from a tiny gold mesh bag.
Until a few years ago only the laundry girls of some of the seaport towns or old peasant women on the French farms dared take their tobacco whiffs thru a long stem. But now, the French newspapers predict that the winter season at Monte Carlo, Nice and Cannes will see a great increase in the number of female pipe smokers.
