Friday, December 23, 1921 Americans Find Armenians Victims of Circumstances, not Beggars The Armenian government would soon be able to work out its own salvation if it could enjoy a brief period of peace, in the opinion of an American Commission which has just returned to the United States after an exhaustive survey of the situation in the Levant. This Commission, which was sent out by the Near East Relief, made a personal inspection of conditions from Syria to the Caucasus Mountains. In addition, the reports of relief workers who have been long on the field and of government officials carefully examined. "In those few districts where the Armenian has been able to live in peace he has thoroughly demonstrated his ability to care for himself and his own," declares Csa. V. Wickey, general secretary of the relief organization, who headed the Commission. "Naturally industrious with an inherent climate for accepting charity, it has been the wholesale disorders of the past year that have presented the people from realizing their cherished dream of a stable, independent government." "Even in the present crisis, with starvation and cholera making such rapid increase into the population that it seems impossible for any to survive, the people are struggling bravely against overpowering circumstances." "A victim of Scabies, Nearly as Prevalent as Starvation. Armenia is starving, not because her people are depending on outside aid for their existence, but because occupation of their land by hostile forces and the consequent interruption of normal commerce." FLOOD CAVES DITCH FOR BIG PIPE LINE The Industrial Fuel Supply Co. had a mile of open ditch cave in by the storm and flooding of the roads on Linda Vista-ave and Palm-st in the Placentia district. Superintendent F. W. Todd said this morning. The cave-in is along the route which is being excavated for the eleven and one-half mile extension of the company's lines from near Placentia to Coyote Hill, beyond LaHabr. The extension will connect up with one of the Southern Counties Gas Co. running to Los Angeles, soon to be underway, and the two will constitute a transmission line to convey gas between any of the principal points, Whittier, Santa Ana, Pomona, touched. Todd does not expect, however, that completion of the line will be much delayed by the cave-in. It is hoped to complete the company's section by Feb. 1. The company also had a force of men at work all night and yesterday at the bridge over the San Gabriel a mile west of Los Alamitos. The bridge carries the company's line on the route from Placentia to Long Beach, and last night the water was three feet deep for a distance of a mile and one-half along the road. There were many washouts. The bridge is in Los Angeles-co. The SPOKE AT DINNER 200 MILES DISTANT NEW YORK, Dec. 23.—A unique feature of the annual fall meeting and banquet of the State College Alumni Association of Mecklenburg county, North Carolina, held recently at the Selwyn Hotel in Charlotte, was the program of "long distance" addresses. Through the courtesy of the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company, the administrative offices at the college, 200 miles away, were connected with the banquet hall in the Charlotte hotel, and each of the fifty-two guests was provided with a telephone. A perfect connection was maintained all through the half-hour or more of speech-making, each guest at the banquet hearing distinctly every word of the speakers in Raleigh. gang kept debris away, so that the bridge didn't have to be blown up. The levees on both sides of the river of course were completely broken down. The bridge over the Rio Honda at Long Beach, which also carries a line of the company, will have to be fixed up. The Southern Counties Gas Co. was very fortunate. Superintendent J. C. Hayden said this morning, suffering very little damage. Only two or three blocks of excavation were open in Fullerton, and only two in Anaheim, the latter on West Chartres-st. Most of the 52 cockerels consigned presented unusually high breeding or poultry. Many of them had pedigrees extending back eight or nine generations, with trap-nest records of their maternal ancestors. Most of them had inheritance records of over 5 eggs, and some over 300 eggs annually. A significant fact is that 900 copies of the catalogue of this sale were printed, indicating the widespread interest in guaranteed纯 bred poultry stock.
