ELL-KNOWN OIL GEOLOGIST SPEAKS TO FULLERTON U. H. S. STUDENTS Mr. Laurence Vander Leck, a well-known oil geologist, and author of a books on the undeveloped oil lands of the state of California, met the students of the Fullerton union high school oil production class at Brea canyon last week, when he described the geology of the oil-bearing formations to them. Standing on a hillside above the canyon overlooking a wide stretch of country and with the Pacific Ocean dimly visible in the distance, Mr. Vander Leck began with an account of the geologic history of the region. In Miocene times, about five million years ago, said Mr. Vander Leck, a warm tropical sea extended along the coast of California from Point Arena in the north as far south as San Juan Capistrano. In Orange-co the waters of this ancient ocean lapped the flanks of the San Bernardino range on the north and ran south past Corona down to San Juan Capistrano. During the long history of this sea the land was slowly sinking and a great thickness of fine grained sedimentary rocks was deposited on the ocean floor. The most important of these beds to the oil man are the diatom shales, formed of the remains of myriads of diatoms: minutes marine organisms that flourished in amazing numbers in the warm water. Diatoms, as these tiny representatives of the vegetable kingdom are called, multiply with extraordinary rapidity, and by the end of this period, when the slow depression of the land ceased and a new cycle of elevation set in and raised the ocean floor out of the sea, the land under Orange-co contained beds of diatomaceous shale several thousand feet thick. The new land also had layers of fine sand and mud shales sandwiched amongst the thick diatom beds. The whole series of interlared diatom shales, sands and mud shales deposited in the Miocene sea is referred to as the "Puente" formation. from the Puente is of higher gravity than found in the coarse Fernando, from which parts of the lighter fractions have escaped. This, in brief, is the history of the formation of our oil. Another cycle of elevation raised the Fernando beds out of the sea and since that time Orange-co has been dry land. The crustal forces that caused the elevation of the land buckled rising formations and this buckling produced three parallel lines of upward folding in the land. These folds like all the geologic changes already described, took counties ages to form and, as the beds gradually tilted upwards, the oil and water in the sands slowly re-arranged their position by gravity and the oil, being lighter than the water, collected in the topmost parts of the folds, which means "along the crests of the anticlines," where it is now found. The gradual elevation of the land was accompanied by the ceaseless wearing away, particle by particle, its surface under the ever present attack of the elements during the ages since Pliocene times, so that at the present day much of the Fernando formation has been removed and swept by the rivers into the Pacific Ocean. In this manner the lower parts of the Fernando and the top portions of the Puerto have been brought near enough to the surface to be within reach of the drill. The three lines of upward folding, or anticlines, referred to above run in a north-westly direction. The most northerly line of structure begins at Olinda and passes through Brea canyon, Whittier, Montobelo and the Los Angeles city field to its end in the Salt Lake field. The second line of structure begins at Richfield and runs through Cayote Hills field to Santa Fe Springs, beyond which it has not yet been followed. The last, and most southerly fold starts at Newport and follows thirteen Huntington Beach, Signal Hill and Inglewood to end at the Beverley THAT'S IT A little fellow crying bitterly, thief old lady cries what she asked: "Got my new dust," sobbed then continued the wry "I know they will why child?" After countless years the land of Orange-co again commenced to sink so that, in Pliocene times, another sea covered the Puente beds and another formation was laid down on top of them. This second formation is called the "Fernando" and has an entirely different character. Owing to the different conditions in the Pliocene sea the sediments deposited were much coarser in texture than the Puente beds on which they rest. The Fernando formation consists of beds of coarse sands at its base. Above these coarse sands there is a stratum of blue shale and, on top of this shale a heavy series of coarse conglomerates and sands was laid down. The total thickness of the Fernando amounts to several thousand feet. By the time the Fernando deposit was completed, the Puente beds of diatom shale were buried at least ten thousand feet below the surface, and, at this great depth their temperature was raised by the heat from the interior of the earth. Records obtained from wells and shafts show that the temperature of the rocks increases at least one degree fahrenheit for each hundred feet of depth. The temperature at ten thousand feet would then be at least a hundred and eighty degrees. The diatom beds, subjected to such a high temperature and pressure for many many thousands of years had all their veget able constituents distilled into oil and the oil was squeezed out of them to lodge in the porus sand beds with which they are associated. Although all the oil was formed in the Puento formation, it did not all remain in its parent beds. Some of it, following along the sand strata, found its way into the overlying coarse Fernando beds, and it is remarkable that today the oil produced Get Our Prices Before You Buy POULTRY SUPPLIES J. Presently a sympathetic old lady came along. "What's the matter, little boy?" she asked. "Got my new pants covered with dust," sobbed the boy. "But there's clean now, dear," continued the woman. "I know they are," wailed the lad. "Then why do you still cry, child?" "'Co mother wouldn't let me take'em off while she beat the dust out." SNAKED' HIS CAR OUT AT WIFE'S COMMAND NEW YORK, Dec. 20.—The tower of masculine authority has fallen at last. It's been totering for a long time, but at last its walls cracked and down it came. Here is a final proof: Charles Brower, motorman of a trolley car, stopped his car at Maserole and Manhattan avenues, Brooklyn, the other day at a signal of one of our volunteer traffic policewomen and then discovered that the woman was his wife, who had been made Captain of the Women Police Reserves of the Greenwich Point police station. "Hey, Matilda," he cried out of the window of his vestibule, "you go straight home! Your feet are soaked this minute: 'Snake the car out there,' commanded Matilda crisply, 'before I hand you a ticket.' Mr. Brower snaked his car out and said nothing more. different formations was of great assistance. In places, where the Puente beds contained water sands, it was necessary to stop drilling as soon as the brown shale was reached, or production would be cut off by water coming in. Exhibiting a large drawing showing a cross section of the anticline near the spot where he was speaking, Mr. Vander Leck reviewed the history of each of the wells. He demonstrated that some wells had been ruined through having been drilled into the water bearing Puente beds, while others situated along side them had been stopped at the right place and were producing perfectly clean oil in large quantities. At the conclusion of his address, Mr. Vander Leck referred to the fine work he had seen the class doing on the Cayote Hills No. 2 lease. He assured them that they were working on the right lines and expressed his belief that the new subjects of rocks and minerals and geology that they would commence to study on the 3rd of January would be of the very greatest use to them in the oil business. Mr. W. J. Travers a member of the board of trustees of the F. U. H. S. thanked the speaker for his lucid presentation of his subject. The favorable position on which they stood had enabled all present to follow Mr. Vander Leck's remarks with ease. Mr. Anderson hoped that the visitors present would inform their friends in the oil business about the new class. They had a very good collection of rocks and minerals and American fossils at the F. U. H. S., as well as blowpipe apparatus. They had also selected an excellent short book on geology. Any new men could join the oil class on the third of January, since these subjects were to be started from the beginning. Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. Quick Service for Late Shops The S. Q. R.
