Upper Picture—Franklin Camel in front of general store and postoffice at N. Lower Picture—Franklin Camel beside adobe ruins at Old Dale. The members of the Bob White Co., Orange-co dealers for the Franklin, are at the present relating the interesting experiences of a motor party which has just returned from piloting the Franklin Camel over the almost impossible roads of the barren desert wastes of Riverside-co. This trip again proved the sterling qualities for which the Franklin is famed. "A deserted mining camp, with buildings and contents practically intact, was one of the interesting places visited by the Franklin Camel. The saillon even boasted a pool table with full equipment, and the Franklin party enjoyed a game under these most novel circumstances," says Bob White. "Leaving Los Angeles Saturday morning the Camel slipped over the road to Riverside in 1 hour and 35 minutes, where a stop was made for breakfast and another passenger taken aboard. Then the journey was resumed by way of Moreno grade and Banning to the Dale road near Whitewater. Swinging up thru the Morongo, past Covington ranch, the Franklin Camel glided down the long slope to Twenty-nine Palms, one of the most noted desert cases, and referred to as 'burro heaven' by prospectors and desert rats who are frequently forced to walk to this place to recover their wandering beast soft burden." "It is 18 miles from Twenty-nine Palms to Old Dale and all that remains at the latter place are a few adobe ruins and a pump house on a little rise to the east. Following a trail southeast from here the Franklin Camel passed Virginia Dale, the first really famous mine in that section, and continuing up a narrow, rocky gorge a short distance debouched onto a sandy slope that led to the deserted mining camp of New Dale, six miles from Old Dale. "It was a most novel experience to drive along the 'main street' of this famous mining camp and find no signs of life—not even a coyote, jackrabbit or rattlesnake. It was abandoned in 1918 when the famous O. K. mine nearby, which produced several million in gold, was shut down. "Picking one of the houses on the 'street,' which boasted three beds and a stove, the Franklin party, consisting of C. J. Carr, Franklin dealer at Ocean Park, R. L. Larson, adv., mgry for Ralph Hamlin, Bob White and Dr. T. F. Schraeder, a well known oil and mining expert of Riverside, spent the first night in utmost comfort. True, the springs sagged badly and the place was rather dusty, but all in all it was an ideal stopping place—a most unusual one. Next day the saloon, general store and other structures were explored and it was most surprising to find thousands of bottles, the pool table, a large safe and other articles distributed around the camp. It certainly must have been abandoned in haste, though no doubt much of the equipment was left to prepare for the boom that has not yet materialized. "Leaving this silent tribute to the romance of hidden wealth, the Franklin circled the rich mineral hills, passing the Supply mine which cool half million in gold, the Dale Pump on the dry lake. It might be weed here that Twenty-nine mile last sure source of water without an adequate supply water a spare tire or two equipment necessary for "middle of nowhere." "At Dale's dry lake the plains E. Bush of Los Ames is preparing to work the pumps. He assured the Frieze that the three-quarter mile near the pump hole worst in the state, and there seen a very few cars can sandy slope, he had never can negotiate the grade. "So of course the Frieze awaking out of the deep silt ploughed back up the gill it had not been provided size tires or chains to go Mr. Bush and his assistant startled—and proclaimed Franklin the one and only. "From here the Camel a pass in the Sheep Hole to Amboy, 40 miles away, edge of Bristol dry lake "sink" which had been reeable feature around Dale, abroma, or desert verbena in full bloom, due to the." "Leaving the Blythe rose switch, the Franklin Camel high centers and crawled through wash after washing ney to the copper mines range, sometimes called the Here the second night ww in the mornin ghe copper were given the once over. "Instead of returning switch the Franklin Camel McCoys and headed south wash of that name, past Moe Ford's well on the Meadow The last eight miles of trail-blazing as it had been these hills echoed to the whips. The return Journey, by hand and indio, was without incident Shaver canyon, on the Meadow a short distance from town is a spot of scenic rich oclorings that many travels hundreds of miles fantastic sandstone formaticularly entrancing by my Dr. Schraeder, who has art and mountain trails every well known make was wide-eyed at more than of the trip, and declared ridden in a car that could deep sand or perform as over all kinds of roads or try work as the Franklin." AUTO CLUB QUICKLY SETTLES CLAIMS No matter where, how and when a loss occurs to any member of the Auto Club of Orange Co., he or she is assured of prompt attention. This fact is fully illustrated in the case of H. J. T. Wilbur of Yorba Linda, who suffered loss of his Briscoe car recently. Friday, the 18th Wilbur drove his Briscoe car to El Centro, and suddenly, without rhyme or reason, it burst into flames and was completely destroyed in a few minutes time. Wilbur lost no time in reporting his loss to the officials of the Auto Club and Lester Tubbs, the claim adjuster for the club, bade a quick trip to El Centro, arriving there Monday, returning Tuesday; and Wilbur's claim was adjusted in full by Wednesday. "We aim to give the promptest attention and at all times make quick settlement of all claims of our members," said A. S. Ralph, manager of the club. "We are a service giving institution for the mutual benefit of all our members, and we are going to do our best to see that they get it."
