Miss Betty West and a caterie of CANADIAN VETERAN IN CONCERT HERE
It's a far cry from going "over the top" at the head of a platoon of Canadian Infantry, in the battle of Monchy and other famous engagements in Planders, to the esthetic pursuit of entertaining audiences with piano classics and playing piano accompaniments for distinguished vocalists.
Lieutenant Thomas H. George, late of the Fifty-eighth Canadian Infantry, who was wounded in the battle of Monchy, August 28, 1918, and was likewise gussed and shell-shocked, will be heard here Wednesday evening, November 30, as pianist with Miss Helen Clark, noted contritto, and Mr. Joseph Phillips, baritone, in their joint recital at the High School Auditorium.
In my four years service overseas," says Lieutenant George," I met a great number of men from the Pacific Coast states I never thought then that I would ever see any of them again; but this coast tour of ours makes me hope that I can renew some of those battlefield friendships I don't even know where some of them live, except that they lived on the Pacific coast; but if any of them happen to live in Anahiem, I certainly hope they'll come to the recital on Wednesday evening—and look me up after the recital. In fact, I would be delighted to meet anyone from here who served overseas with the Canadian forces.

LARGE RPRODUCTION FROM SUGAR BEETS
The sugar beet is slowly coming back to its proper share in world sugar production. Twenty years ago, says the Trade Record of the National City bank of New York, it was producing two-thirds of the sugar of the world, the percentage of world sugar output supplied by beets having ranged from 62 pct. to 60 pct. during the period 1897 to 1902, so this was during a period in which Cuba's cane sugar production was unusually low. Normally, adds the bank's statement, the beet supplied just about one-half of the world's production, down to about the beginning of the European war. Then with the reduction in the European crop, for Europe was the world's chief beet sugar producer in pre-war days, the share which the beet supplied of the world's sugar fell from 49 pct in 1913 to 29 pct. in 1918 and 22 pct., in 1919-20.
In that low record year, 1919-20 Europe's outturn of beet sugar had fallen, according to Willett & Grey, the well known sugar statisticians, to 2,594,000 tons as against 8,341,000 in the sugar year 1912-13. In the sugar year 1920-21 the U. S., which had been producing about 650,000 tons of beet sugar per annum, suddenly increased its outturn to 969,000 tons, while Europe also increased its outturn of the beet product to 3,719,000 tons bringing the share which beet sugar formed of the world total output in 1920-21 up to 28 pct., while for the crop year 1921-22 the authorities above named estimate the beet sugar crop at about 31 pct. of the total output of the world.
