War is the cruelest, most merciless recourse that afflicts mankind. It is a sad commentary upon human nature that almost countless centuries have rolled by without even a serious attempt being made to put an end to warfare.
The person who leads an honest, sincere life, devoted to useful work, however humble this work may be, makes a real contribution to the sum total of human progress and human happiness. Despise not the doer and the doing of little things. For of a multitude of little things, earnestly and skilfully done, are great things accomplished.
The United States is in the Arms Conference to make good out of it. If no good comes of it, this Nation will not be blameworthy. But there are every indication that a vast deal of good will result.
That the industrial situation in the Eastern states is improving is indicated by official reports of federal government bureaucums. More men are being employed and the output of manufactures is being increased rapidly.
RAIL IMPROVEMENT IS GOOD AUGURY
New railroad equipment to the total cost of $25,000,000 to $30,000,000 is ordered by great railroad lines entering Chicago. This additional equipment consists for the most part, of freight, coal, refrigerator and passenger cars.
The railroads are placing these huge orders now to replenish their rolling stock against the time when industry and business, greatly revived, will provide abundance of traffic for all the transportation lines. This brighter era is expected to dawn within a few months, and the railroads want to be ready for it. The fact that they truly expect it is indicated by their course now in placing such large orders for rolling stock.
Manufacturing of these thousands of new cars will give employment to many thousand workmen. This will help to relieve the unemployment situation.
News like this is very encouraging. It can have but one reasonable interpretation—which is, that a better time is coming, with more men employed, with industry and business more active and perhaps with a greater measure of prosperity than this country ever has enjoyed.

No. 8 is drilling at close to 2800 feet in sandy shale.

Hurst No. 1 is nearer being free from water now than at any time since the well was brought in almost a year ago. Making approximately 150 barrels the oil is carrying but little water and will probably clear up entirely. The Hurst Oil Company has secured 500 acres in Santa Barbara county and will drill a prospect well at once.
The Jamison Oil Co. lost a string of ten due to collapsing at 2225 and had to put in a second string, 8-in and set this at 2255.
The Malis Oil Syndicate is determined to make a well out of No. 1 and is running a core barrel to determine conditions at 2900 feet.

Failure of the water to entirely disappear in the Bardeen well at 2.-260 resulted in the pulling of the 41-4 and the re-cementing of the well.
The Chino Corona United has about completed the getting out of 6-in. casing string and will be making new hole at 3678 in a few days. The work is proceeding with cable tools.
The Mahala Oil Co's No. 1 while not on steady production as yet, has made a little better than 3000 barrels for several days and give evidence of doing better. Gas has been working on the standing valve and when this is rmdid it is thought that the production will improve considerably. The big feature of this well lies in the fact that it is producing 25 gravity oil, and the oil is coming free from any water or sand. Preparations are going forward for the starting of No. 2.
The finding of water below the shoe in the Pasadena-Puente's test well drilled to 1340 feet, puts the outcome of the well in some doubt still. Ten inch was set at 816, the bottom of the hole being at 1340.
Drilling at 3300 in sandy brown shale the Pomona Oil Company has encuntered no showings that would cause any excitement.
Drilling now at 2200 in sandy brown shale the St. Helens Garnier No. 1 has passed thru some favorable oil showings. Drilling is going good and the formation changes are being watched closely.
The Puente Hills Oil Co., a new company that has just entered the field, has a rig going up on the Alvarado property adjoining the St. Helens Petroleum.

ding a rig.
On the Towers lease at 3625 feet, the Petroleum Midway has just brought in a 1000 barrel well. Had it not been for the coming in of the Western Union at Ashton No. 1 some five months ago the Petroleum Midway would have given up their holdings. Columbia 2-1 stands cemented at 3186. Vollmer-Meyer No. 4 set at 504 feet of 15-in. Ray Walker is being perforated at 3005 preparatory to bringing in. Smythe No. 1 got a water job at 3386 and is now drilling ahead in the oil sand at 3425. Smythe No. 2 is rigging up.
Drilled to 3012 feet the Republic Petroleum was fortunate in getting a water shut off and is now making preparations to put the well on production. On account of an exceptionally good showing a well of some capacity is expected.
