PUBLICITY BEST WEAPON OF PEOPLE
WASHINGTON, Nov. 8.—“A disappointing disaster like that of Paris’ will mark the arms conference here if its doors are locked and secrecy prevails. Senator Johnson, of California, declared today in a statement to the United Press, pointing out the urgency of full publicity regarding the parley.
“Publicity is the weapon of peoples of which they are ever robbed by secrecy. Substantially the same representatives responsible for the Versailles treaty meet now at Washington to limit armaments. They worked their will to the everlasting harm of the world at Versailles.”
BEGIN MANHUNT TO SOLVE FIRE PLOT
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8.—With six industrial plants and buildings destroyed by fire within the past two weeks, officials of Los Angeles and Vernon have engaged detectives to hunt down a suspected arson ring that has planned to wreck some kind of uncanny vengeance on property along the Los Angeles-Vernon line.
Fire Chief Ralph Scott of the Los Angeles department stated today that all of the fires, which have caused losses extending well above $1,000,000 were started by arson experts. A strict watch is being maintained in that neighborhood to prevent further attempts at destruction by fire.

$21,000 BOND ISSUE TO BE VOTED UPON
CYPRESS AND HANSEN, Nov. 8.—The proposed new school house will be, if erected, the greatest improvement obtainable in this section, it is believed.
The plans are complete and surely reflect wisdom on the part of the school board. The auditorium is to comprise the center of the building and it is to be large enough to seat 250 people. The class rooms are to be located on the east and west sides of the auditorium and are to accommodate 40 pupils each. Teachers' rooms, library and stage are to be on the south side of the auditorium. Dressing rooms are to be in basement.
There is to be a bond election held November 26 for the purpose of authorizing the issuance o bonds to the amount of $21,000.
D. C. Batis, inspector, Charles A. Harden and W. C. Miller, judges, compose the election board for that date.
The warm, dry days of last week were beneficial here in harvesting sweet potatoes. The sweet potato crop in this section is very good. W. Watanaba, farming the George Clothir place, has the bumper crop of the section. J. H. Benner claims the largest yield for one hill, having taken 16 pounds of good marketable potatoes from a single hill.

A prominent firm reports that it has thousands of dollars to wager on the Democratic candidate at 3 to 1, but almost an entire absence of Curran money. The 7 to 2 odds are the longest yet offered, however. Notwithstanding these bets on plurality, would not fall into the class of sure things because New York is always prepared for a surprise.

OPERA DIRECTOR
PRESS AGENT AT WILL
NEW YORK, Nov. 8.—If I could be director of The Metropolitan Opera company I would think it quite some undertaking and not feel that I had to be anything more. Yet the high sounding Gilulio Gatti-Gasazza who fills that job turns press agent and promoter at will in telling the public of the promise of his new season. In a recent account of Chaliapin, the Russian bass who I sto be with them this year, Gatti proves himself a writer of no mean ability as well as a good business man. He tells an absorbing story, which should later tell at his expensive box office.
Plays Safe With Self
Before Night Game
NEW YORK, Nov. 8.—We have discovered a sensible poker player out here. No poker played in the ultimate can be deemed sensible, but it is encouraging to hear of one who manages to cover all the time. The man I have in mind, regularly before sitting down to the night session, mails himself a money order covering the price of breakfast, which is delivered in the morning mail, and permits him to go the limit during the night as any sport should. The sad part of the tale is that he also reports that he never neds the breakfast change.

LATEST FOR MOVIES

We've had insurance against all sort of weather, but to get an insurance company to take a chance on protecting you when you want a blizzard is something new. For "The Two Orphans," being screened in Mamoroneck, a real snow-storm is necessary. So an insurance company has undertaken to guarantee that there shall be one before November 20. If it doesn't come, the company must pay $25,000, to the motion picture people.
