Saturday, November 5, 1921 SPORTING EVENTS ANAHEIM & ORANGE TIE SCORE 14 TO 14 Anaheim and Orange high school football teams met in a hard-fought combat yesterday afternoon at the Orange high school gridiron, the game resulting in a tie, the score being 14 to 14. The Anaheim team declared that Orange would have been an easy mark, but for the condition of the football field which was almost like ploughed ground, and the Anaheim boys were not accustomed to sink into the sands to such depths. The game opened by Orange kicking off, Anaheim bringing back the ball for slight gains. Orange soon regained the ball, however, and made steady gains, and within five minutes from the opening of the game broke thru to a touchdown. Orange kicked the goal. Orange kicked off again, and the remainder of the first quarter was a game of give and take. Anaheim getting the advantage but failing to make a touchdown. In the second quarter, Anaheim began to take offensive in a series of steady gains and Cook broke thru to a touchdown. Cook kicked the goal. The score at the end of the first half stood 7 to 7. Orange kicked off the second half Anaheim getting the ball. There was a lot of scrimmaging in the third quarter, and changing of the ball from one side to the other, but Anaheim forged ahead, and Cook broke the Orange line making a touchdown. Cook kicked the goal. The score at the end of the third quarter stood 14 to 7 in favor of Anaheim. Orange kicked off in the fourth quarter, and for the greater part of the quarter Anaheim more than held her on it. It seemed beyond question that she would win the game. But during the latter part of the quarter Orange gained the advantage, following it up and making a touchdown. Orange kicked the goal, making the score 14 to 14. The Anaheim line-up was as follows: Bushard and Fergus, end; Schmidt and Gutoksy, tackles; Ingram and Betzold, guards; A. Hile, center; Kitchens and Brown, halves; Clayes, quarterback; Cook, fullback. Fullerton high defeated the Poet prepaat Whittier yesterday afternoon by the decisive score of 21 to 6. Whittier's score came in the last minute of play when Pendleton, sub-tuitionback, intercepted a forward pass and ran 75 yards to a touchdown. Smith, right half for Fullerton, scored in the first quarter on a cross-buck. McDermott, quarterback, bucked the line for the second touchdown in the second quarter, and Arroso, right half, snagged a 35-yard forward pass from McDermott and secured in the third. Earle, right tackle, kicked all goals. Line-up for Fullerton; Shipsky, White, Osborne, Acker, Bromfield, Earl, Callahan, McDermott Arrowso, Smith and Carpenter. Line-up for Whittier; Hilspel Harvey, Wingard, J. Smith, Predlericks, Moss, Reece, W. Smith, Sepulveda, Rassmussen and Stratton. AT SAN DIEGO TODAY The Fullerton Junior college team left this morning to wallop the San Diego team in a football copbat at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon on the San Diego Junior college stadium. The team was accompanied by L. E. Pumper, principal of the high school, as a member of the faculty. The Fullerton boys are confident of gaining the victory. HORSESHOE UITCHING CONTEST Horseshoe pitchers will be interested in the announcement that a tournament is to be held in Glendale on the 25th and 26th under the sanction of the state association of horse shoe pitchers. Association rules will govern the contests, prizes for which aggregate $300. An entrance fee of $50 cents is required, and it is asked that all entries be in not later than the 19th of the month. Alaska prospectors, who were able recently to work, for the first time, on the government railroad near here, report that the body of water is almost literally "paved with gold." For years, until the railroad penetrated the section, the six-foot tides that rush up the arm, swamping small boats, have kept miners out. Now they are going in over the railroad and report several rich finds made in the arm at low tide. Rich gravel, it is said, lies offshore. One vein, near Girdwood, assays $160 in gold per ton. The vein is covered by high tide.
