FRESHMEN GIVEN SOCIAL COURTESY BY SOPHOMORES
ONE of the gayest social events of the High school occurred last evening in the auditorium building, when the sophomores entertained for the freshmen with a reception. As the guests arrived they were met at the door by ghosts and ushered into the reception room. Although the party was not a masked affair, the decorations used corresponded with this season of the year. Corn stalks and pumpkins were used in the corridors and in the main room palms and bouquets of roses very attractively adorned the corners.
When all had assembled, an interesting program was rendered. The president, Miss Florence Austin, gave an address of welcome, followed by a reply from the freshman president. Several readings were given by Miss Roma Tedford and Florence Findlay. The vocal solos given by Miss Elizabeth Donnelly were very much appreciated as were the piano selections by Florence Austin. The Manter twins, Helen and Hazel, played a duet on the piano which delighted the listeners.
After this program a skit was given by several of the Sophomore class. The name of the little skit was Mrs. Jarley's Wax Work. The cast of characters in the play are as follows: Singing doll, Clara Keister; Patrick Henry, Henry Hodges; Mark Anthony, Allan Rains; Shakespeare, Paul Dyckman; Irish Peasant, Margaret Twinem; General Pershing, Carl Twinem; Old Mother Goose, Gretchen Schutz; Sailor Hobson, Steve Ferdinando; Mrs. Jarley Louise Keister; two assistants, Stewart Jayne and Paul Leuschner; Cleopatra, Inez Moore; Grand Opera Singer, Dorothy Eicholtz; Tom Sawyer, Hilsworth Billig; Hamlet's Ghost, Willard Findlay; Maude Muller, Frances Reed; two headed freak, Rosie Labourdette and Ruby Lemus; Ole King Cole, Fred Amsby. The skit is a burlesque on notables, and caused no end of laughs. The call was given for the line to form for the "roots" procession.
