The Village Gossip
Probation Officer R. R. Miller has devoted himself enthusiastically to the business of changing Frank Maxfield's opinion of the Orange county courts.
This transformation is temporarily delayed until the authorities can locate Maxfield, whose last known address was Pollows. The exact opinion that Miller wishes revamped is one recently expressed to him by Maxfield's brother, after the superior court had ordered Maxfield to provide $20 per month for the support of his child. According to Miller, the brother opined that:
"Of course, we don't have to pay any attention to your little local court's orders. They don't amount to anything."
Acquaintances of Mr. Miller can easily visualize the bristles arising as this asserted remark struck his astounded ears. It is quite a different view of the courts that Miller holds and he is so sure that his own view is the correct one that he is determined to show Maxwell's error to that individual when located.
Maxfield's child was recently made a ward of the juvenile court and given into the custody of its grandparents.

Unsalted albacore, bonita, tomcod or kingfish are tempting lobster bait, according to veteran fishermen who were today taking advantage of the open season which began on Saturday in this state.
Sportsmen who have taken advantage of the opportunity reported good fishing, while many others have not yet returned from the scenes of their efforts. Santa Monica, Long Beach, San Pedro, Balboa, Venice, Redondo and locations with similar formations of rock and kelp are most favorable for the fishing.
The bait will be more attractive if it is slightly putrid, according to experts. Fishing should be done with a snag, the end of the line resting on the bottom. When the lobster is felt scratching on the snag, it is altogether proper to give a healthy jerk on the line, and haul in the catch.
The season closes March 1.
Altho full reports on the number of deer killed during the 1921 open season had not been rendered, it is believed by local sportsmen that the number is high. Hunters were plentiful, and it is generally understood that there was no lack of game in the county.
The open season on doves will end Oct. 31 while the quail season will open Nov. 1.

SHELL HORSCH 1 ON PRODUCTION TEST
Long Beach
Drilling stopped on the Shell's Horsch No. 1 at 2730 feet. After cleaning out and putting the hole in production condition the well went on a production test Monday. The results of the oil and water test will not be known for several days. The report that the well is making 1500 barrels is without foundation. Alamitos No. 3 set pipe at 3190 and a water test is now being made. This well is now showing considerable oil. Alamitos No. 2 is drilling at 2500 in brown shale. Babb-Tucker drilling at 3100 in sandy brown shale is showing oil. Jones No. 1 at 2700 is in sandy brown shale. Martin No. 1, a new well, set 600 feet of 15½ Mesa No. 1 at 2792 is still held with a fishing job. Pickler No. 1 drilled to 2590 and set pipe at 2499. Stake-miller No. 1 at 3096 is fishing. Wilbur No. 1 shows 1160 feet of hole, Goddard No. 1 another new well is rigging.
Drilling on the California-Mexican Petroleum Syndicate's No. 1 is making some good progress. More than 1000 feet of hole was made last week. The log shows 2100 feet and drilling in hard sand.
The Crest Oil Co.'s No. 1 is now drilling into production at 2850. The screen pipe has been put in and everything is in readiness for what looks like the second producer on the Hill. Crest-Consolidated has spudded in.
Drilling at 3275 Dabney No. 1 is in sandy shale showing some gas. It is the intention to set pipe soon, the idea being to look for a suitable landing place in the next 50 or 100 feet. Dabney No. 2 shows 1800 feet in hard sand. No. 3 is a rig and the lumber is on the ground for No. 4. No. 4 is located across the road from the Standard's Alamitos No. 1. The Standard well will prove up Dabney's No. 4 location.
E. J. Miley's Xemino No. 1 passed the 3800-foot mark yesterday.
Drilling out the cement at 3307 the Oceanic found a little water, enough to necessitate a second cementing. This was done Monday, and today the well is drilling out to go ahead. A new kind of oil well cement was used that is guaranteed to set in two days. The results of the two-day standing is now being awaited with some interest.
The Signal Hill property of the Orange-co Petroleum Co. is to be developed by McIntyre Bros., Long Beach. Thomas Lloyd is in charge and actual work is scheduled to begin soon.
After several days of deliberation and careful testing the Ramsey Oil Co. decided to set Long Beach Municipal No. 1 at 2740. At this point an excellent clay formation afforded a suitable landing spot.
Drilling at 2500 feet in brown shale showing streaks of sand the best that San Martenas No. 1 is showing is an occasional color. No. 2 set pipe at 3054 and is standing cemetery.
With the state's O. K. on Sandburg-Cooperative and No. 1 drilling out the cement at 2808 the outlook for the Sandburg Petroleum Co. coming into production soon is good. Reports from No. 1 today are to the effect that the second cementing appears to be a "job."
The Standard Oil Co.'s Bixby No. 1 is now the deepest well drilling in the state. At 200 feet deeper than a mile the well is not showing anything to cause any excitement in the way of an oil well. It is the intention of the Standard to proceed as deep as possible and make a conclusive deep test well of the field.
Drilling at 5480 is going nicely with the rotary; of course the work has to be done carefully.
Adjoining the Torrance holdings the Standard is building new rigs on the Sylvester, Long Beach Trust and Savings Bank, and the Lomita
