CAN'T DOPE STARS ON SERIES TEAMS CYPRESS, Oct. 11. Five games of the world’s best have been played and the Yanks are one jump in the lead. It’s mighty hard to dope a bunch of temperamental stars like those that form the two teams. If they were ball teams built up and shaped into one big well-working machine like Speakers Indiana, a career would be able to draw some conclusions, but the Yanks and Giants can not be figured. Both teams are made up of stars and most stars are temperamental and hard to govern. The Yanks were figured to be the slug team. So far they have led in speed. The Giants at present appear to have the edge on the pitching as they have more dependable pitchers. Mays and Moyt are all the Yanks have shown so far. Harper may develop into a hero if started. You never can tell in a world’s series. The great Kelly has been almost a complete failure so far. Ruth has not been the shining star. The Meusel boys are not living up to expectations. Hoyt and McNalley are the shining lights for the Yanks so far, and Frisch stands out alone for the Giants. Phil Douglas has pitched two wonderful games for the Giants, but Phil is a star that may shoot off at a tangent at any time. Firewater and Phil are liable to unite most any old time and firewater and pitching will not work together. It’s a great series. Your games as good as mine.—SARGUM SPROUT. INTEREST KEEN IN INSECTARY SCHEME With upward of $300,000 spent by citrus growers last year in fumigating and other thousands spent in fighting red spider, coiling moth and aphela, the movement now on in Orange county to establish. SOULES WINNER AT VERNON LAST NIGHT Bud Soules, who boxes Young Dudley in the main event at Sparkes’ next Friday evening, won his fight with Jack Brooks last night at Vernon. Soules put up a heady battle and outclassed him all the way. Altho Brooks showed plenty of gameness and hard-hitting ability, still Bud was always in the lead. Ad Rubidoux, the Riverside lad who sunk the Crusser-Ro Tollas here at the club’s show last Friday, also came three with another win when he decisively outpointed Charlie Roselli in the main event of the evening, after four unusually fast and furious rounds. Johnny McManus, the little brown boy from Palms, who has appeared before the local club a couple of times and made a good impression, also scored a win over Packey McMullen of L.A. in four-rounda. Dainny Nunes beat Frankie Monroe. Tommy Richards lost to Roy Butherland. Chief Abernathy and Ralph Pena drew, as did Herb Ryan and Johnny Woodruff. All the boys who are to appear on Friday’s card out at the Pistic Farm are working out daily so as to be in “pink” when the opening gong rings. Some fast work seems assured local fans when—the boys step for Matchmaker Billy Darnley has lined up some classy doings for this week. Young Dudley and Bud Soules head a card of bouts. $150 LOPPED FROM VELIE AUTO PRICE The popular Kanyon Konqueror, also known under the factory name of Velie, has had $150 lopped off, the old price making the new price $1475 delivered in Orange-co., according to word just received by McGraw-Hill. He thought ther INTEREST KEEN IN INSECTARY SCHEME With upward of $200,000 spent by citrus growers last year in fumigating and other thousands spent in fighting and spider, coiling moth and aphids, the movement now on in Orange county to establish an insectary is second in importance to citrus growers only to that of the development of citrus shipment by water, in the opinion of D. Eyman Huff, manager of the Hewes Realty company and chairman of a committee appointed to develop plans for locating an insectery here and the employment of etomologists to operate the plant and conduct experiments. It is expected that definite action on the plans will be taken tomorrow at a conference of citrus growers to be held at 12:30 p.m., at the packing house of the Placentia Orange Grower association packing house at Fullerton. Various farm centers and grower organizations have selected delegates to the conference, which will make the meeting a representative one. It is believed that by the maintenance of an insectery here for propagation of an insectery here for propagation of insect enemies of the pests the costs to growers in preventing ravage to their orchards will be very materially reduced. It is estimated that it will cost around $10,000 a year to maintain at least two high-class entomologists in the county and to operate the insectery. Plans for financing the insectery have not been developed, but it is possible that equable distribution of the expense will come in the way of proring according to production of crops of growers of various products which destructive posts attack. AMAZON IS NAVIGABLE The Amazon River and its tributaries have 50,000 miles of navigable waterways. $150 LOPPED FROM VELIE AUTO PRICE The popular Kanyon Konqueror also known under the factory name of Velie, has had $150 lopped off the old price making the new price $1475 delivered in Orange-co, according to word just received by McGraw brothers, of Fullerton, distributors of Velie motor cars. The popularity of the Velie in Orange-co is becoming more pronounced each week, an increasing number of them being constantly noted on the streets and boulevards. It is believed that the Velie 34 at its new price, was tax included, will send Velie sales totals skvrcketing to very near the top of the sales total sheet, and that if they continue as brisk as during this first week of the new low price the Velie will be close to the top. It is reported that Lessors Oil company will be drilling on their well No. 1 within 15 days or two weeks. When the selling of stock failed to produce the necessary finances the company began to sell units and the scheme is working wonders. Oil stocks are a drug on the market at present and the company did a wise thing in switching tactics. Any way, a test well is almost assured and that is what the community is interested in.
