The Orange Co. Plain Dealer An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday R. W. ERNEST, Manager PAUL V. HESTER, Editor Subscription rate—In North Orange-co) Per year $2; Six months, $1.25. Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter. Remember, the thing that the unemployed most need is work, not charity. A free press and enhanced public intelligence thwart political demagoguery, for the most part. President Harding is thoroughly democratic and makes a good impression upon the people wherever he goes. The people want clean, decent moving pictures, elevating in tone, not putrid with vice or vicious suggestiveness. Wherever there is distress in this country, there the Salvation Army may be found ministering unto the distressed. No man with money should escape the strong arm of penal justice, if he commits crime. There should be nothing in court procedure to nurture the notion that the man with money easily can escape the consequences of criminal offenses. Human nature must be changed greatly before warfare is eradicated. But human nature is capable of being changed for the better. They are mobbing Charlie Chaplin in London—because they like him so well. The object of such riotous demonstrations is not averse to that kind of "mob" law. It is short sighted, fatal folly to build cities and towns in lowlands along streams subject to heavy floods and not take steps to apply scientific flood control to such streams. Yes, there is a Santa Claus, and his pack this year, from present indications, will be of the generous proportions which delight the kiddies, as well as men and women of adult years. The nauseous, vicious "Bohemianism" whose legitimate fruits are such tragedies and scandals as that which took the life of Virginia Rappe, in San Francisco, should be frowned upon by laws and ordinances and by public opinion. THE CHURCH AND INDUSTRY (Note—This article is published at the request of the department of evangelism in connection with the annual Calif. conference of the German M. E. church in session this week here.) By Ernest F. Tittle The Church is concerned about industry for the simple reason that the Church is concerned about men. "I have come," said Jesus, "that they might have life and have it to full." The Church is here for the same reason. It has no more sacred duty than to see it that all sorts and conditions of men shall be given as it is ethically un-Christian. Churches are not all agreed as to what changes in industry ought to be made. But many of them are ready to affirm such principles as these: That the human element in industry is first to be considered. That as long as the present separation of capital and labor exists, both capital and labor have a right to organize as a means of securing industrial justice. That arguments between capital and labor should, by both parties, be held absolutely inviolate. That in consideration of a just return, labor should render a just ser- WARNING SENSUARIES "Unless the seating picture moves pictures earlier than now than comparison," Bid said last night. Tittle The Church is concerned about industry for the simple reason that the Church is concerned about men. "I have come," said Jesus, "that they might have life and have it to the full." The Church is here for the same reason. It has no more sacred duty than to see to it that all sorts and conditions of men shall be given a fair opportunity to have life, and have it to the full. The Church cannot fail to recognize the gravity of world-wide industrial unrest. Nor can the Church fail to see the meaning of such unrest. It is, no doubt, due in part to an inevitable weakening of the social structure during a World War. But it is due, also, to certain evils that have always been inherent in a system of production of profit, rather than for service. Such a system has proved itself as economically unsound. That in consideration of a just return, labor should render a just service. That the earning capacity of industry should be scientifically determined in order that there may be a fair distribution of profits among all who help to produce them. That, as soon as practicable, labor should be given a voice in the management of industry. That if slowly, none the less surely, the whole industrial system should be shifted from a basis where men compete for profit to a basis where they cooperate for service. That man feels a natural longing for religion is evidenced by the multitudes that follow "'psychics, healers and other false prophets,' said the bishop. AUSTRIA SCRAPS TRACKS The wireless trolly car has not yet arrived, but the trackless trolly car is here, and in successful operation. It is the invention of a Viennese, Ludwig Stoll, and no less than six different lines are operating in the cities of what was formerly Austria-Hungary. A flexible cable instead of a rigid pole conducts the current to the car, and the vehicle can thus move as far as 64 feet to one side of the wire itself, and accommodate itself to any condition of traffic. The current is returned through a negative wire which runs beside the positive wire, and is similarly connected with the ear. Well-built, smooth roads are required; given these, the running of the cars is said to be successful. CALL GIRL WITNESS IN NEW DEATH TRIAL REDWOOD CITY, Sept. 30.—Subpenaes were issued here for "Dolly Mason" and Zeh Prevost, a show girl to appear as defense witnesses in the trial of William A. Highower, accused of the murder of Father Heslin of Colma. These girls were witnesses in the Arbuckle case. JAPANESE IS FIRST TO CLIMB MT. EIGER BERNE, Switzerland, Sept. 30. — The Elger mountain, in the Bernese Oberland Alps, has been ascended by way of the Mitteleggicrat, the north-east ridge. The ascent was made by Yuko Mika, a Japanese, aged 23, accompanied by three guides. The feat was made possible by the fact that, due to the extremely hot summer, the Gendarme, the most difficult part of the route and which hangs over, was for the first time in its known history free from ice and snow. The ascent of the Elger by the Mittelegiggrat was once attempted by the well-known American climber, Brady, with three guides. Now that the Elger has been ascended by this ridge, virtually all the difficult positions in the Bernese Oberland Alps have been conquered. FIRST FORIGN PAPER ON GROUND WASHINGTON, Sept. 30. — So far as known, the London Times is the first newspaper of any nation, which will engage officially in the Washington conference on limitation of armaments, to establish headquarters in Washington. The Times has leased a furnished house a short distance from the British embassy which will serve both as working quarters and a dwelling place for the staff which will be sent to the United States to handle the news concerning the conference. JAIL FOR BIBLE CAPETOWN, Sept. 30. — Thomas Sullivan, arrested for breaking into the store of the British and Foreign Bible society and stealing a Bible, was sentenced to three months imprisonment.
