Saturday, September 24, 1921 THE ORANGE Boy Tows Two Loaded Fram Pulls Three Ton Load Making Distance in 19 Minutes A demi-coupe, one of the latest in Franklin models, has been delivered this week to Edgar Hartung of Anaheim by the Bob White Auto Co., Orange-co distributors. This is the first of this type to be received in Anaheim and one of the very few to arrive on the Pacific coast. Designed with special features and siding plate glass windows, the demi-coupe greatly resembles the custom built California top. A touring car was also delivered to Charles Hoffman of Placentia. This is the first of this type to be received in Anaheim and one of the very few to arrive on the Pacific coast. Designed with special features and sliding plate glass windows, the deal-coupe greatly resembles the custom built California top. A touring car was also delivered to Charles Hoffman of Placentia. Speaking of the special construction of the Franklin which eliminates friction and resistance when in motion, Mr. White relates an incident which occurred in Los Angeles last week. The well-known ant was outdone one day last week when a youth of 105 pounds, an natural, hauled a load in excess of three tons for a distance of one mile on Figueroa street. Not only did he complete the mile, but made it in nineteen minutes flat. When it is realized that the average pedestrian covers short distances at three miles an hour, and that the load consisted of two Franklin inclosed models, with four passengers, the showing was most unusual. EASY ROLLING. This simple but effective demonstration of the easy rolling ability of the Franklin attracted considerable attention while in progress. It has caused much discussion among motorists who were startled by the unusual sight. The route selected was the measured mile on Figueroa street marked by the Auto Club for the convenience of motorists who wish to test their speedometers. Starting across the street from the club it ends in front of the Samson Tractor Company below Adams street. It is, therefore, seen that in accomplishing this stunt, Six-hearth and Washington streets, with their slight rise and car tracks, had to be crossed. The start of the last was made at 10:40 a.m. and 10:50 saw the mile post reached. The sun had softened the pavement slightly by that time, which offered additional resistance, but Ernest Bris, one of Ralph Hamlin's employees, had set his mind on making the mile as quickly as possible, and though it was his first load test for that distance, onlookers thought he was a circus strong man, not realizing that the Franklin is perhaps the easiest-rolling car manufactured. Everything was strictly stock, the wheel bearings not being touched, nor oil changed in the transmission or differential. One of the cars was taken right off the sales floor, having been driven only on a short factory test and from the railroad yards to the salesroom. Even the brake bands were left untouched, which means that the cars were in the same condition for the rolling test as for a tour over varying roads, with the sole exception of the tires, which were inflated to ninety pounds. QUIPP OVERCOME. One spectator was quite overcome when he observed the nonskid tires on the rear wheels of both the se- NO DEPRESSION ON HUDSON AND ESSEX Not many months ago the firm of Townsend and Medberry located in Santa Ana as the dealers for the Hudson and Essex motor cars. The excellence of their product and an energetic sales organization resulted in success and today finds them acquiring a new territory and firmly entrenched in Anaheim with H. R. Grove as manager. During this period they have occupied what might be regarded as cataclymic economic and industrial changes following in the wake of the World War. In common with other great industries, the manufacture and sale of motor cars have been tremendously affected by the conditions incident to the general readjustment. Yet the business of this firm has always been marked, even in the most trying seasons, by a steadiness and a healthy growth. Optimistic always, Grove firmly believes that next year will witness the pendulum of business at the top of the arc opposite the position it occupied when readjustment was well under way. "We have every reason for confidence in what the future holds for Hudson and Essex," said Mr. Grove. "Next year will see readjustment complete, and by the spring of 1823 will be seen the high tide of business since the World War. Optimism is the keynote heard in financial circles of the East today, and confidence is at the helm of the bark of industry." In the period of one year the sales of Hudson cars has passed the 100,-000 mark, and those of Essex cars the 50,000 mark. BATTLESHIP BOMBED BY ARMY AVIATORS OFF CHESAPEAKE BAY, Sept. 24.—Four 100-pound phosphorous bombs flung down from an army plane flying at an altitude of 500 feet, found their mark on the obsolete battleship Alabama and sent the vessel up in flames, in a new series of army air service tests off Chesapeake Bay. Will some kind reader please explain why day-break is the best time to mow lawns? Director general of railroads sells $6,500,000 additional railroad equipment trust certificates, bringing total of sales to $33,124,100. If Maxim can explain relativity we'll admit he discovered the thing. Many Ranchers Buy Only International Many ranchers throuout the country and especially in So. Calif., are making their farming equipment thoroughly international, states M. Elistate, of the firm of M. Elistate & Son, orange-co representatives, with salesrooms in Orange, Pullerton and Santa Ana. Not only are international trucks and tractors proving their superior qualities in their lines of industry, but the other farm implements, whether for the citrus grove, orchard or field are first in demand because they have been especially designed to best perform each duty. A very complete story is carried in the current issue of 'the California Citrograph dealing with the value of chopped alfalfa as a fertilizer for chards. The experiment was conducted on the Chase ranch, of Riverside, one of the larger ones in that section. One of the features of the test that especially interests Mr. Elistate is the fact that international implements, including tractor, quailage cutter and manure spreader was used throutout. The Elistate firm has reserved a large space at the Huntington Beach Fair and a large line of International products will be displayed. BUSINESS LOOKING UP FOR CHEVROLET In speaking of the business conditions during the month of September, Frank P. Taggart, local dealer for the Chevrolet, states that things have assumed a very much brighter tone, and the gloom of August has to a great extent been dispelled. So far this month the Frank P. Taggart firm has reported a sale for each day. "Of course," states Mr. Taggart, "I can only judge conditions as experienced in my own organization, but I find that as a general rule, what holds true with one dealer is true with the others. "I will have to admit, however, that the recent drop in the prices of our models have greatly stimulated buyers more than ever before, realizing that taking everything into consideration, the Chevrolet offers one of the best values on the market today."
