POSSES SEARCH FOR OFFICER’S SLAYER
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23. — In one of the most extensive and most determined man hunts ever staged in So. Calif., a heavily armed posse of approximately 300 men, alled by airplanes today searched for Juan Palmarine, 25, and Jose Negrota, 22, for the slaying of Deputy Sheriff Crosley and Henry F. Nelson of Riverside and the wounding of Martin Helm, 17, of Pomona, near Riverside, late yesterday. Two suspects have been arrested, but it is believed both will be able to establish an alibi.
The men in the posse, armed with rifles, shotguns and heavy pistols, at dawn today began a thorou search through the Santa Ana river bottom that extended 15 miles from the Salt Lake railroad bridge, four miles from Riverside, to Colton.

LONDON, Sept. 23—Edwina Ashley, 20-year-old society; golf and sport enthusiast, became the wealthiest debutante in the world by the sudden death of her grandfather, Sir Ernest Cassel, financier who left her an estate valued at approximately $100,000,000.
DENIED NEW DRESS FOR FIVE YEARS
CHICAGO, Sept. 23. — Five years of married life without a single new dress and no furniture except a bed and table was enough for Mrs. Selma Scully. On the fifth anniversary she sued Robert Schully, having an income of $4000 a year, for divorce. Mrs. Schully also charged her husband with cruelty and said he was the most parsimonious man she had ever met.
CENSUS BULLETIN SHOWS BIG INCREASE
SACRAMENTO, Sept. 23. — There are 681,662 Californiaans who are "foreign sons," the negro population of the state has doubled in the last 10 years, and the Japanese population has increased 70 per cent in the same period.

PROPOSE FEDERAL TAX ON GASOLINE
WASHINGTON, Sept. 23. — With the reduction in taxes of individual incomes urged by Democratic senators on the Senate finance committee, a tax of 1 cent a gallon on gasoline has been suggested to take up the resulting $105,000,000 loss from the income taxes.
