SPORTING EVENTS START DRIVE OCT. 3 FOR GREAT STADIUM HEREFLY, Sept. 17—That California will have a stadium second to none in the country became a certainty today when the campaign plans, bids, and specifications of the stadium were made public at a student body mass meeting on the university campus. To raise the million odd dollars necessary to insure construction of the high stadium, the executive committee contrary to the system adopted by Stanford, Ohio State University, and the University of Illinois, in their recent drives, has inaugurated a plan whereby every subscriber will receive dollar for dollar to the extent of his subscription. To this end there will be given in return for each $100 subscription, $100 in script entitled the holder to tickets to university athletic contests in the value of $100 over a period of ten years. This script is good for $10 worth of tickets each year for the ten year period. If expended on California-Stanford games, it entitles the subscriber to two $5 settles in the choicest section at the "Big Game" each year for ten years at Berkeley or at Palo Alto, beginning this year. Initial plans for the campaign have already been formulated and call for simultaneous action throughout the entire state. Committee chairman for all the counties and principal cities have been appointed, publicity for the campaign has been distributed and all is in readiness for the opening day, Oct. 2. The stadium, a tribute to those sons of California who lost their lives in the world war, will be one of the most modern edifices of its kind in the country. The stadium will be of the oval type, and will accommodate 60,000 John Galen Howard, university architect is designer. Bill "Stormy" Gordon has a new alibi. He has a new ball. It goes something like this: "They weren't falling very good last night. I gotta new ball, you know." What he wants with an alibi is beyond us. He rolled 12 practice games last night for an average of 182, while M. Varner was doing the same for 183 and P. Varner for 181. FALL SPRAYING FOR BLACK SCALE ON DECIDUOUS AND OLIVES The presence of the scale is detected by the black discoloration of the foliage on infested trees, due to a fungus which grows in the liquid droppings of the scale, which are sticky and which are known as honey-dew. The honey-dew settles upon the foliage and fruit, furnishing an ideal medium of growth for the fungus. The very objectionable black color of apricots, which is seen so often as they are being packed, dried or unbed at the cannery should put the grower on his guard. If losses are suffered as a result of this low grade fruit, spraying to control the scale will prove a profitable investment. The work in the deciduous orchard for best results should be done in the fall shortly after the leaves have dropped. At that time the scales are small and the spray will kill them more readily than when they attain greater size. The same recommendation applies to the olive, and spraying should not be delayed long after the crop is removed from the trees in the fall. The most satisfactory spray which has been used for this pest is oil in the form of an emulsion. The writer has used some of the proprietary preparations known as "miscellaneous oil" or "soluble oil" with very good success. Miscellaneous oil usually is applied at about 10 per cent strength, although a lesser strength may give good results.-George P. Weldon, in Orchard and Parin. The members of the camp have been working on floats and decorating their homes and building a temporary pavilion for their festivities for Thursday evening, and all day Friday. The president of the benefit association for Mexicans, from San Pedro, will address them both in English and Spanish. A parade will be given in the morning through hite town of La Hubia, and picnicking and dancing will conclude the celebration. Miss Drummila Markey, who has charge off the welfare work of the camp expects to maintain order during the affair. A mural painting depicting their conception of liberty, has been made by two of the camp workers. Mrs. A. S.Campbell, accompanied by her daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs. Buck Hayes of Brea, the W. C. Campbell of the West Coast leme, and the Missa Frances and William Nelson of Anahiem, enjoyed a plentee dinner of chicken and fixings on the beach at Huntington Beach last Sunday. LA HABRA, Sept. 17. — The La Habra C. of C. met in regular session after the summer vacation at the social hall last Monday evening. The county librarian Miss Margaret Livingston gave a talk to the members relative to housing the library. The matter was referred to a committee consisting of the Rev. Grant Smith, Mr. Saddler and E. E. Proud. Mr. Smith is in favor of the school building being for a location. But for various reasons this will not be practical. The fire hall has been suggested and this seems to meet with the approval of the most of the citizens. The road question was then brot up, the decision to start at once on the road work on Hiat street was decided upon. W. I. York, Ray Franz and C. Cook interviewed the county engineer, McBride, in regard to the $250,000 due this district, and the matter was settled amicably. A gang of men was promised to be at work very soon. The widening of Central ave. will be hastened then. Mr. and Mrs. E. Olive and family, the Corbit family, and several other parties were plenic visitors to Stanta Ana canyon Sunday. Mrs. D. A. Davis went down to Long Beach Monday and was the guest of W. L. York at the Silver Spray apartments over night. Sunday visitors to the benches were Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Wagg and daughter of Los Angeles who were at Catalina; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Young and family Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Young, and Mrs. Charles McKinley, and The Village Gossip With 22,000 bird water troughs being manufactured under a patent granted to Father Henry Eummelen of St. Joseph's church, for distribution to all parts of the country, the Audubon Utility Manufacturing Co. of San Ann is directing its activities toward the institution of a manufacturing plant in this city. Father Eummelen is a bird fancier and maintains an aviary at his parish home. Constant observation of the feathered creatures in their method of drinking and eating has resulted in the development of feeding and watering troughs that are declared by bird men to be far superior to anything yet offered to the public. The secret to the water trough is a glass water container in the shape of an electric light globe. The water is contained in the globe and is touched to one end of the small trough, the water level being constant. The container holds water sufficient for eight days, assuring fresh water all the time. The trough cannot be fouled: The feed trough operates on the same principle: The water trough retails at $2. I dreamed of peaceful country lanes, where all was calm and quiet, without a sound of cabs and trains—I thought I'd like to try it. And so I left the town behind, where noisy bells were ringing, and went in search of peace of mind, where little birds were singing. I went to bed that night at nine far from the clanging city. I knew I'd waken feeling fine, but, listen—what a pity! No not a sound disturbed my rest—except a rooster crowing; a barking dog—the little pest; the wind in tree-tops blowing; two tom-cats yowls and growing deep; a rusty windmill's rattle; the bleating of a loosely sleep; the bawling of some cattle. Just as the day began to break the hired man got busy—more noise, I saw that man could make than any old tin Lizzle. The morning chorus then began with hungry horses neighing; the cook best loudly on a pan, while donkeys gall were braying. My beauty sleep; O where was it? I heard the roosters crowing. I thought twins time that I should flirt. I said I must go back to the glided-city new, where people all are sleepers; where the beasts are kept within a zoo and worry but their keepers—O. H.
