HIGH SCHOOL GIVES
OIL FIELD COURSE
By Alexander Anderson
A well 1200 feet deep was being pumped with a "macaroni" tubing pump. The tubing in the well was four and one-half inches in diameter and the macaroni tubing was three inches in diameter. A three-inch pump was in use.
The oil in this well was 11 gravity and albo the oil string had button screen pipe in it, a great deal of fine sand came thru the screen and was pumped with the oil; so the production was 45 pct. sand. Naturally this was pretty hard stuff to handle thru a pump.
The pump was driven by an electric motor better to a jack shaft. The jack shaft was belted to a band wheel and the band wheel drove the pitman and walking beam. The "macaroni" was hung from the walking beam by a Ratigan hanger. All this is usual Californian practice.
After the well was put on the beam, it was found that the slowest speed the pump could be driven at without heating the motor was 25 strokes per minute. At this speed the macaroni would not drop fast enough, so the pump worked badly and also caused a heavy jerk on the beam at each stroke.
The management sent down a larger pulley for the jack shaft mo-foot pulley to a four-foot pulley the tor drive. The old pulley was three feet in diameter and the new one sent was four feet in diameter. Pump would run at three-quarters of its old speed, or say 18% strokes per minute, albo the motor would.
With the change from a three-still run at the same speed as before.
Now, anyone knows that a well producing 45 pct. sand will quickly sand up when the pump is stopped, so a little arithmetic was done before the change in pulleys was made. These two facts were figured out before the well pulling gang started to change the pulley, block be shifted forward?
How much should the band wheel belt be shortened?
This is how the arithmetic was working at Huntington Beach again.

With the change from a three-still run at the same speed as before.
Now, anyone knows that a well producing 45 pct. sand will quickly stand up when the pump is stopped, so a little arithmetic was done before the change in pulleys was made. These two facts were figured out before the well pulling gang started to change the pulley block be shifted forward?
How much should the band wheel belt be shortened?
This is how the arithmetic was done:
The motor belt (which was an endless belt) will now have to go around a four-foot pulley, instead of a three-foot pulley. Remember it doesn't touch the whole circumference of the pulley, but only half of it. Well, the difference between half the circumference of a four-foot pulley and half the circumference of a three-foot pulley divided by two will give us the figure we want.
This is four minus three multiplied by 14 and divided by four and equals 0.78 feet, or say nine and three-eighths inches and this is the amount the block must be moved forward.
Now when you move the jack shaft forward this amount you have to put a piece of the band wheel that is twice as long. The band wheel has then to be shortened 18% inches.
With these figures in hand the gang started the job of changing the pulley. One lot changed the pulley, shifted the engine block and shortened the engine block brace while the other men cut the band wheel belt and shortened it. All this was done at once, and took about half the time it would have taken to first find the place for the block and then measure over the band wheel for the length of the belt.
When the motor was started up again everything went fine and the well-pulling gang didn't have to pull the well.
This sort of arithmetic is easy and it is often very useful in the fields. Anyone who attends the nine-months' course in oil production at the Fullerton high school and junior college will be able to work on these lines without any trouble. The course is open to all oil workers.

1744 Trees
1126.65 feet
In eight years accurately compiled statistics have proven that the average price paid to Valencia orange growers of this county has been $2.78½ per box. In accepting these figures as a working basis I am in a position to show you a 20.4 acre orange grove, situated in the city limits, that will pay a net income of 22 per cent on price asked. This grove containing 1744 trees is acknowledged to be the best in Orange county, embracing the finest soil, extra large trees suggesting a most healthful state, and a most prolific setting for next year. On but 10 acres of this grove there is at the present time an estimated crop conservatively placed at over 6000 packed boxes. No one will refute my statement when I say that on no other grove will you see manifested the intelligent care and attention as has been accorded this particular acreage. In conjunction with its wonderful value as an orange grove consider carefully its equally valuable location, right here in Anaheim a few minutes from the center, frontage on three streets and only a short distance from the new park. Another feature, one of the streets on which this grove faces will, when paved, be the direct road to Los Angeles. Think what this will mean. This is absolutely the best proposition ever offered in Anaheim, and at the price asked it has an immediate resale value or by holding as an investment will prove to be most lucrative. It will pay you to consider this grove before purchasing elsewhere. You can't afford to permit this opportunity to escape.
