SUNDAY HAPPY DAY AT PRESBY CHURCH Sunday was a happy day at the Presbyterian Sunday School, since many of the pupils and teachers who had been away on extended vacations were back in their places. We were very glad to welcome Rev. Walker back and are planning for an active winter work with him. Rev. Walker began the Junior sermons preceding the regular morning service last Sunday. This will be given regularly every Sunday, and all of the pupils in the Sunday School are not only invited but urged to attend. The attention of parents is called to this part of the service and we hope to have the hearty co-operation of all parrots in having the presence of their children at this special service. Wednesday evening the regular greeter and praise service at the church. Rev. Walker will lead in the second evening's study on "The Life That Wins." He requests that everyone read the 11th and 12th chapters of Hebrews before that time and come prepared to consider the two simple conditions prevailing in the life of the winning Christian. Thursday evening the Sunday School Workers' Conference will meet at the home of F. N. Gibbs, 210 S. Kroegerst. Supper will be served at a p.m. Rally Day will be the chief subject for consideration. A large attendance is desired. Friday evening, Sept. 16, the regular monthly meeting of the Missionary Society will be held at the home of Mrs. Geo. M. Ross, 211 S. Claudius-st., at half past seven. The subject for roll call will be "Faithfulness." A cordial invitation is extended to all ladies of the church and congregation to be present. It was pleasing to see the entire choir in their places again. In the morning they favored us with'an them entitled "Lead Kindly Light," by Dudley Buck, and Prof. Askin sang a beautiful solo. The Ransomened of the Lord," by MaeDermid. In the evening the anthem "Draw Nigh to Me Ye Weary," by Cornell, was sung. Rev. Walker is planning to make the evening services especially helpful and attractive. His text Sunday evening was taken from John 2:24. He said in part: "During the Lewis Clarke." COUNTY FORTUNATE IN UNEMPLOYMENT Unemployment is not a problem in Orange county according to H. E. Wahiberg, farm advisor, and J. F. Jackson, manager of the Farm Bureau employment office. Jackson estimates the total of unemployment at 6000, less than half of which is composed of permanent county residents. Probably 2000 of the number are in and around Santa Ana, while the remainder is collected around other communities. Reviewing the unemployment situation from the standpoint of his knowledge of conditions as the man to whom the Orange county farmer turns when farm labor is needed, Jackson said: "Orange county probably is in better condition as regards unemployment than any other county in California, which would mean that it is better off than any other place in the United States. But that is no reason for us to brag about and encourage the residents of less fortunate counties to make a Mecca of Orange county. This office finds that the automobile creates a large transient labor element that did not exist before automobiling became as popular as it is today. All the man in the car wants is enough to keep his car running and the necessary three meals a day for himself. The transient labor is difficult to estimate, and as a matter of fact, it can be no more than a running estimate. Before you have them counted they are gone. But the permanent residents of Orange county form a different class. I believe not more than five per cent of the county's 60,000 population is out of employment at present, a low but conservative estimate. I am positive the figure would not run over eight per cent. Permanent residents can survive short unemployment periods. The majority of them have their homes and savings, and can utilize the time beneficially around their homes. This is not going to transmit as far as concerned. Then again the right through, if they work here in a couple continues on into San Bernardino, speaking time of the labor situation, the farmer said: "The farmer is not trouble in securing surplus to harvest his crops; the vesting has taken up the tion of the unemployment are many men calling every day looking for it." Through our people we are able to give the class of labor he wants and choose, and put theright job. It is differe bureau which charges cees, in that we locate a and hope that he keeps more commercial buse hopes for a quick turn. In the evening the anthem "Draw Nigh to Me Ye Weary," by Cornell, was sung. Rev. Walker is planning to make the evening services especially helpful and attractive. His text Sunday evening was taken from John 2:24. He said in part: "During the Lewis and Clark Exposition I was greatly surprised to see the immense trees that were upon exhibition in that enormous building, because I had only been accustomed to the hickory and other small trees we had back home. Now where are those big trees grown? In the shelter of that big building? Not at all. They had grown out in the open, where they had weathered many a storm and fierce blast. Just so the stalwart characters whom we meet have been formed by meeting and overcoming the hard things of life. Oh the pampered youths of today who have everything done for them and receive things handed to them as it were, on a silver platter! Give me those who have known responsibility in some form from early youth. But you say, what about those suffering from overstrain; those who have really come down with nervous prostration because of too heavy burdens? Let me ask who placed heavy burdens on them, God? Or did they take it upon themselves? I know many who are bearing heavy burdens because of vanity, foolish ambitions, and like causes. How many really know the promises of God? We sometimes sing, "I am standing on the promises of God," yes but the trouble is you've been standing in one spot too long, never realizing that the Word is just full of promises forming stepping stones as it were to cross the stream. Again, let me ask, how many burdens do our fellow men carry due to us because of carelessness, thoughtlessness or selfishness? Consider this look about you and see what you discover. God never intended that his child should inflict burdens on any one, but rather should lighten them. In the early church there were agnostics, just as there are today. Those who were learned in the sciences and higher branches. Those who could speak very intellectually yet lived exceedingly low morally. These confused the people with their much talking. Some times people are questioned as to their belief in the miracles. These need not trouble any one. We may not be able to explain them, we don't need to. Can anyone explain the miracle of a changed heart, a changed man? This is the greatest miracle of all and most of us have witnessed this change. God does not ask you to be burdened with intellectuality. God asks you to believe and to live trustingly, simply and purely. To live such a life before AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS FOR EXPORT BEING FINANCED WASHINGTON, Sept. 14- The war finance corporation now is considering seven transactions involving approximately $20,000,000 for the financing of agricultural products. They are: Oklahoma Cotton Growers' associations, 200,000 bales of cotton; Texas Farm Bureau association 300,000 bales of cotton; California Prune and Apricot Growers, Inc., 25,000,000 pounds of prunes; Washington Wheat Growers' Association, 8,000,000 bushels of wheat; Idaho Wheat Growers' Association, 2,000,000 bushels of wheat; Oregon Cooperative Grain Association, 2,000,000 bushels of wheat; and the Montana Wheat Growers' Association, 1,500,000 bushels of wheat. In the first four months this year Germany mined 4,000,000 more tons of hard coal than in the same period last year and 6,000,000 more tons of lignite. To rid gardens or truck patches of insect pests a trap has been invented into which they are driven and caught as it is wheeled over growing vegetables. AT STUD Pure Bred Toggenburg Bucks. This is not generally true of the transient as far as savings are concerned. "Then again the transients drift right through if they cannot secure work here in a couple of days, they continue on into San Diego county." Walshberg, speaking in a general way of the labor situation as related to the farmer, said: "The farmer is not having any trouble in securing sufficient labor to harvest his crops this year. Harvesting has taken up the largest portion of the unemployment, but there are many men calling at the ranches every day looking for work. "Through our employment bureau we are able to give the farmer the class of labor he wants. We can pick and choose, and put the right man in the right job. It is different from the bureau which charges for its services, in that we locate a man in a job and hope that he keeps it, while the more commercial bureau apparently hopes for a quick turn-job." LEGENDS DENIED OF MYSTERY STATUE KLAMATH FALLS, Dr., Sept. 14. — Romance and mystery surrounding the sculptured figure in granite boulder near Crater lake, known romantically as "Our Lady of the Woods," has been explained by F. L. Miller of Portland. Miller poo-poohs the legends and the whispered tragic origin of the crude statue, declaring that he knows it to be scarcely five years old. He states that it was chilled from the rock in 1917 by Dr. Earl R. Bush, who at that time was in charge of a road workman's shop in the vicinity and is now in the United States health bureau in Cincinnati. Dr. Bush, Miller says, amused himself in odd moments in making the statute, his first attempt at sculpture, and completed it in a little less than six weeks. Since then the statue has attracted some attention in newspaper articles and among tourists, and various tales of its origin, highly imaginative and romantic, have been circulated, he declares. The fashion of wearing elaborate settings of semi-precious and even imitation stones and the discovery that America can make those elaborate settings as well as Europe is responsible for the suddenly increased opportunities in that line. In accepting these figures as a working basis I am in a position to show you a 20.4 acre orange grove, situated in the city limits, that will pay a net income of 22 per cent on price asked. This grove containing 1744 trees is acknowledged to be the best in Orange county, embracing the finest soil, extra large trees suggesting a most healthful state, and a most prolific setting for next year. On but 10 acres of this grove there is at the present time an estimated crop conservatively placed at over 6000 packed boxes. No one will refute my statement when I say that on no other grove will you see manifested the intelligent care and attention as has been accorded this particular acreage. In conjunction with its wonderful value as an orange grove consider carefully its equally valuable location, right here in Anaheim a few minutes from the center, frontage on three streets and only a short distance from the new park. Another feature, one of the streets on which this grove faces will, when paved, be the direct road to Los Angeles. Think what this will mean. This is absolutely the best proposition ever offered in Anaheim, and at the price asked it has an immediate resale value or by holding as an investment will prove to be most lucrative. It will pay you to consider this grove before purchasing elsewhere. You can't afford to permit this opportunity to escape.
