White, director of the Nursing Service in the Pacific Division of the American Red Cross, is calling for 75 enlistments in her territory, California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. The call carries an emotional appeal when it is known that hospitalization of disabled veterans of the World War is increasing. The government through its Unite States Public Health Service designates the need for more nurses as an emergency and the Red Cross is putting the full strength of its nursing service into action to meet it. HER LUCK MIGHT TURN Mrs. Meek was a very economical housewife—at least in her own opinion she was—but she went to her husband one morning and said: "John, I am very sorry, but I am afraid I must ask you for at least $5 a week more as housekeeping money." The cost of living remains so high." "Amy," he replied, "I'll try to let you have $2 a week extra. But that's the best I can do. You're pretty extravagant, Amy." "Extravagant?" asked the wife with a bitter laugh. "I like that John, how can you say that I am extravagant when I have saved my wedding dress for over 30 years on the chance that I may yet make a second marriage?" EGGS IN ENGLAND A few weeks ago Manager Barber of the Roultry Producers of Central Calif. made a trial shipment of California eggs direct to London, England. The shipment arrived in such perfect condition that arrangements were immediately made for much larger consignments. Manager Barber is on his way to London for the purpose of perfecting distribution in Western Europe. Thanks to the discovery that eggs dipped in heated paraffin oil will keep in a nearly fresh condition for an indefinite period, it is possible to ship California eggs to far distant markets. For best results, the eggs after being processed are put under refrigeration and it follows that suitable steamer space is the only limit for placing California eggs in the leading markets of the world. California shipped out last season 1000 cars of eggs to New York and other Eastern markets. Few of these however, were storage packed. New developments have now made it possible to ship processed storage eggs as successfully as newly laid have been shipped in the past. Threatened over-production on the Pacific Coast is thus provided an outlet, and the production of large white eggs will continue to show profit for the successful California poultryman. ARMY CANTONMENT BRINGS $900,000 WASHINGTON, Aug. 27.-At the recent sale of Camp Taylor, Kentucky, the net proceeds from the entire sale were $902,097.82.The buildings and land were sold by auction conducted on the ground and the sale brot over $100,000 more than would have been realized by accepting the highest offer when sealed bids were called for about two months ago.
