OTOR LIBRARY IS HELP TO FARMERS
Not so many years ago you heard a argument that the auto was desired to monopolize people's time, at they would have no more leisure hours for reading and that the action would consequently degenerate below its present standard of iture.
Since then, of course, it has been loved pretty definitely that exact-the reverse is true. The auto uses such an enormous amount of that people have more opportunity than ever to read.
As a matter of fact, there are a number of librarians in the country day who will tell you that the auto helping them introduce culture. Particular success with motorized caries is found in the case of Norville, Ind., a city of about 5000 situated about 20 miles north of Innapolis.
In an exceedingly interesting article describing the methods and re-uses employed in delivering the library to the farmer's door, Miss Lu-Miese, Novlesville's librarian, says:
"We tried both adult and juvenile lions in school houses and homes found the adult section was not patronized.
The country schools are open five days a week and only six months a year. So the house to use plan of service was determin upon.
Dodge Bros. business car was hit. We had the wire screens and entire back removed. The steel is were bent over seven inches used for shelves in front of the cases. Inside the car we built bookcases of oak with glass is opening outward on both sides the truck, so that it advertises its wares as it travels over the entry. The shelves slant slightly k to hold the books away from glass.
Our territory is now laid in 16 n, but we must add at least five these in order to cover it. Some our trips are 32 miles long.

THINK ATTEMPT TO BURN DELHI STORE
Did someone try to burn a store at Delhi?
Police were today investigating the source of the fire which did $100 damage to the building at Delhi occupied by the P. L. Polanski store.
The blaze was discovered shortly after midnight by Mrs. Danek who lives near the store and who was awakened by the noise of cracking glass. She immediately called the proprietor, who assisted by some of the neighbors, succeeded in subduing the flames before they got much headway.
Investigation revealed that the fire was evidently of incendiary origin as Polanski today stated that the wall near the door and the floor had been sprinkled with gasoline, while little pools of the same inflammable liquid were burning on the sidewalk directly in front of the building.
MAY BE YOUR FAULT IF BATTERY'S SICK
"If your storage battery seems weak and alling and inclined to lie down on the job, don't decide offhand that it is plain lazy and a poor battery. It is probably sick and you are probably to blame through negligence." says Mr. West, of West Bros., Orange-co distributors for the Vesta battery, with service stations in Anaheim and Placentia.
According to Mr. West the following are some of the diseases a storage battery is subject to: "Loss of capacity is due to clogging up of pores in the plates. This may be caused by a cell having become dry, due to evaporation or leakage. Corrosion of the plates is caused from the water used, which is not chemically pure and which contains the metals in solution of the pipes through which it passes. Fractures and buckling can be traced to several different sources—driving over rough roads where jar is severe; overcharging; over discharging, and the fact that any thin metal will bend when overheated, due to the unequal stress it is subjected to internally, and for the reason that overcharging or overdischarging causes great internal heat."

NO EARLY CUT IN AUTO INSURANCE
There will be no lower automobile insurance rates for motorists of So. Calif. in the near future despite recent action taken by the National Auto C. of C. in severing its connections with the National Board of Auto Underwriters, according to a detailed announcement made yesterday by officials of the Auto Club of So. Calif.
It is up to the public first to reduce the risk by careless and reckless driving, faulty garage construction and activity of automobile thieves before insurance rates can be lowered in this section, it was pointed out.
Why does not a cautious driver get a lower insurance on his car than one who is known by the insurance company to be reckless?
Because the cost both to the insurance company and to the individual solicitor in investigating, except in a general way, the reliability of every automobile driver, who seeks to take out insurance, would bring the overhead expense of the company up to a point which would raise the insurance rates to the same figure at which they were before such an elaborate investigation was attempted.
The action taken by the National C. of C., according to eastern patches, was taken in an effort to secure a nation-wide inquiry by insurance companies into a man's character before writing his policy, and also because of the disagreement with the grouping of cars according to their mechanical construction.
The Inter-Insurance Exchange of the Auto Club of So. Cal., which is the criterion for cooperative insurance throughout America, characterizes any stand taken for an investigation into an individual's personal habits in regard to his rate of insurance as impractical for the average insurance company at this time because of the enormous expense involved in making personal investigations. Any insurance solicitor, it is pointed out, would make very little money if he had to expend time investigating the personal character of each one of his "prospects."
SAFETY FIRST DRIVE IS NEEDED IN PARIS
PARIS, Aug. 29—The number of accidents that occur on Paris streets show plainly the need of a "safety first" campaign here. Paris knows no systematic traffic regulations such as obtain in London and New York.
Taxicabs dart about at a reckless pace, often missing each other only by inches, while pedestrians, who are not taken into consideration at all, actually risk their lives every time they cross a street.
The only rule the taxi drivers seem to observe is that of trusting in the nerve of the other fellow when it comes to dodging collisions. Under such conditions it is marvelous there are not more accidents.
Still, the records for street accidents for 1920, which have been made public, give eloquent proof of the danger in Paris traffic, the total number of accidents for the year being 60,375 or an average of 165 a day.
YOUNGMAN TO ISSUE GRID SUITS AUG. 29
B. W. A. Friend
With football season close at hand prospects are very bright that Anaheim Union High School team will have a point-winning team this year. Coach Youngman has issued a call for all men to report Aug. 29, when they will receive suits and will be instructed to report again on Sept. 6th at which time they will start active training for the fall campaign.
Anaheim faces a harder schedule than any eleven in Orange-co and on account of the loss of several veterans of last year, and the necessity of the new candidates getting accustomed to the various shift plays, it has been necessary to start training early.
Bill Cook will lead the squad this year. He was unanimously chosen captain and without a doubt, will prove to be a good leader.
Shoebridge and Topham who held down the end positions on last year's team will not be here this season. But there will be many candidates out for these positions, and several are well fitted for these important places.
Tanner and Capt. Wilmsen of last year's team will not be there and the loss of the latter is worrying Young-man more than that of any other player. Wener Walter will be groomed for Wilmsen's place at fullback but too much must not be expected of this warrior although he possesses exceptional speed and ability.
There are several newcomers with football experience who will show up when practice starts. Hubbell brothers from Long Beach will give somebody a run for their money for they are two clever players. An experienced player from Fullerton and several other men who will be announced later will be on hand.
Schmidt who came to school last year too late to take part in athletics is a finely built athlete, tipping the scales at 185 pounds, and so, as the season draws near, football interest is being felt keenly.
Practice games have been scheduled with Riverside and San Diego and games are pending with Norwalk and Compton.
The Orange League consists of Anaheim, Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton, Huntington Beach and Whittler.
Men who have already signified their intention of donning football suits are: Capt. Wm. Cook, Al Clayes, Werner Walter, Nick Hille, Matt Bitzzold, Roscoe Ingram, Gerald Fergus, Oscar Guese, Hubbell Brothers, Stewart Gates, Jim Bloom, Emory Crist, Russell Rener, Johnny Hushman, Al Hiel, Schmidt, Fulham, H. Greggs, Bill Friend.
G. A. R. CONVENTION RATES.
In answer to the many inquiries made of the Women's Relief Corps regarding railroad rates to the fifty-fifth annual national G. A. R. convention to be held at Indianaapolis, Ind. the week of Sept. 25, the corps decided at their regular meeting held yesterday afternoon to issue information as they have received it from the department headquarters as follows:
"The Central Passenger association has accorded a rate of one cent per mile for the comrades, their wives, widows, or dependent members of the families and for army nurses. All other organizations attending the encampment will be required to pay a fare and one-half for the round trip ticket."
The French government has established a special bureau to study and experiment with tractor plows.
The Auto Club of So. Cal., which is the criterion for cooperative insurance throut America, characterizes any stand taken for an investigation into an individual's personal habits in regard to his rate of insurance as impractical for the average insurance company at this time because of the enormous expense involved in making personal investigations. Any insurance solicitor, it is pointed out, would make very little money if he had to spend time investigating the personal character of each one of his "prospects."
The "hazard" which exists in any community is taken into consideration by the insurance company. That is, the amount of recklessness, the number of accidents and various considerations which go to make up any element adverse to the insurance company. In So. Calif., however, motorists are fortunate in having at hand the Insurance Department of the Auto Club, which actually does undertake to represent the individual policyholder, as well as its own welfare, thus having a dual personality, whereas ordinary stock insurance companies have only one personality, inasmuch as they represent only their company interests and not the personal interests of the policyholder.
It is up to the public to reduce the risk or hazard in So. Cal., says the Auto Club. With fewer accidents, fewer fires, fewer stolen cars, there will be a greater chance of lower insurance rates in the future in this section.
