EAST SIDE BEACH
FIELD GETS BOOST
Huntington Beach
The east side of the Huntington Beach field got its biggest and best boost with the advent of E. J. Miley's big well No. 1. Drilled to 2670 feet the well came in with an initial production ranging from 2000 to 2500 bbls. Like the Eddistone's No. 1 on the Ashton the Miley well was a surprise. It was not known that there was anything there until the cement was drilled out and the big well came in. Yesterday the big well was cut down to a quarter inch opening. It is believed that as soon as the land is cleared and well put into production condition it will duplicate the Republic's 1000 bbl. well.
E. J. Miley has been one of the consistent developers of the Huntington Beach field since it opened and is entitled to the reward of a good well. This new well besides enhancing the values and outlook for the Miley holdings proves up a big area on the east side. It makes the Fidelity, Huntington Coalinga, Edca, Mallis and even the Blue Shale and Sun No. 1 look good. Also the Vistaf Del Mar and Bolsa Chica No. 2 should be encouraged. The Miley well is the biggest boost the Huntington Beach field has had for months and relieves a lot of anxiety.
To prevent either a water sand or an oil sand from being passed up, the Amalgamated Oil Co. is doing 50 feet of new hole 8-inch size during the day tower. The night men ream the hole out to 10 inch and carry the pipe. The additional expense per well is about $10,000. But the expense of the extra precaution will, it is believed, be warranted in getting better producers right at the time the well is completed. As far as it is known the Almagamated is only company doing this extra work.

The Amalgamated Oil Co.'s Huntington No. 3 drilled to 2725 feet in a 375 bbl well. It is of interest that the Amalgamated is proing at the same depth that the Standard Oil Co., shut off water at 100. Powler No. 1 has dropped from 100 bbls to 175, but has increased gravity from 27 to 28.1. Huntington-1-A is flowing by heads at the rate of 500 bbls. Huntington-2-A is drilling at 2600 and No. 1 Pearce is cutting boilers and rigging up.
The Argonaut Oil Co. spudded in at Turley No. 2 and is now drilling. No. 1 has settled to a 150 bbl producer and continues to give some trouble sanding up.
The Orange County Drilling Co. spudded in on the Bolsa Chica Petroleum Corporation's No. 1 yesterday and drilling is going right ahead.
Fishing for tubing was down to the last joint yesterday, and it is expected that this well will be back on production in a few days. The initial production of the Edens Syndicate was about 300 barrels.
Getting a substantial showing of oil at 2725 feet the Golden Dome Oil Co. has stopped drilling and will set ten inch.
Recent developments on the east and north side of the field has led the Holly Sugar Co. into the oil game. The sugar company has about 70 acres of available oil property and will begin immediate action.
Work has started on the rebuilding of the Huntington Central Oil Co.'s No. 1 rig recently destroyed by fire. It is the intention of the company to get this well back on production as soon as possible.
At 2910 the Invader Oil Co. No. 1 began to show a little indication of oil, and the ten inch will probably be set in the next 100 feet.
After getting what is conceded to be one of the best showings ever got in the field, Huntington Owners No. 2 set a string of 6 inch at 2384. A big well is expected when the plug is drilled out.
Miley-Keck proved a little surprise yesterday when it increased its production from 100 to 200 bbls. The oil is 23 gravity.
The first dehydrator to go into the Huntington Beach field has been installed by the Republic Petroleum to take care of the emulsion in the oil product at No. 1. While the well is producing no water, there is an emulsion accompanying the oil that does not separate out by the ordinary heating method. The Republic's No. 2 has been cemented at 2630.
Waiting on tubing is holding the State Consolidated No. 1 from being one of the producers of the week.

American Ships Now Sail Seven Seas
AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINE
ANYWHERE in the world on an American ship! Americans no longer need go to sea or ship their goods in foreign bottoms. That, today, is the proud message from the National Capital to the American people.
From every port in the country now sail stately and luxurious vessels, under the American flag, carrying passengers and cargo to every country in the globe.
The nation, through the United States Shipping Board, is flinging a new Declaration of Independence to the world, independence of foreign vessels, for American travelers and commerce.
With a proud merchant fleet numbering 2509 vessels of 19,325,890 docked at ports throughout the world, American ships now sail seven seas.
HYDRO-ELECTRICITY BEATS GOLD MINING
WASHINGTON, July 27—The value of the electrical energy produced by hydro-electric plants in the mountain and Pacific states during 1920 was greater than that of the gold produced in those states in the same period, said Alexander T. Vogelsang, former assistant secretary of the interior, in a statement issued today. Figures obtained from the director of the Geological Survey show that the total value of the power produced by water power in the mountain and Pacific states was about $79,000,000 which is nearly 2.2 times the value of the gold produced in the same states in 1920.
The kilowatt-hour production by water power by public utility plants in 1920, as shown by the Geological Survey report, was as follows:
Montana ... 1,118,905,000
Idaho ... 588,978,000
Wyoming ... 2,271,000
Colorado ... 184,674,000
New Mexico ... 828,000
Arizona ... 106,527,000
Utah ... 212,243,000
Nevada ... 32,690,000
Washington ... 1,154,135,000
Oregon ... 370,867,000
California ... 2,568,541,000
Total ... 6,340,659,000
It is estimated that about 80 percent of the developed water power in these states is in public utility plants and that the total production of electrical energy from water power would amount to about 7,925,000-1,000 kilowatt hours.
During the same period the gold production was as follows:
