Smith, of Buena Park, Swears Out Complaint Against Saugus Man as Result of Collision Late Saturday Night. Wm. A. Smith, of Buena Park, today swore out a complaint at the district attorney's office against Logan W. Goodknight, of Saugus, as a result of an auto collision about 11 p.m. Saturday near the Petroleum Midway test well at Buena Park and Anaheim-blvd. The charge is parking a car beside the road without a tail-light. ANAHEIM DEFEATS SAN BERDOO ELKS BY 7 TO 4 SCORE Locals Make Their First Five Runs on but One Hit: Play Santa Ana Next Anaheim defeated San Berdoo yesterday afternoon at Commonwealth park, Fullerton, for the third straight win of the Calif. Elks league. The governor Anaheim 7 runs, 5 hits, 2 er- Smith says he was driving toward Anaheim when he ran into the rear of Goodknight's Chevrolet. Both machines were badly damaged. Mrs. Smith and Miss Virgle Brown, of Anaheim, were considerably bruised. Oscar Bruskey, of Garden Grove, after conference with Sheriff Jackson stated he would swear out a complaint against the owner of a Nash roadster, license No. 563-255, as the result of an accident on the Newport-rd Saturday evening. Bruskey says he was driving a Ford delivery truck south thru Costa Mesa when the roadster approach rapidly, took an abrupt turn to the left. To avoid a headon collision, Buskey says he drove into a guy wire and telephone pole. He asserts three SAN BERDOO ELKS BY 7 TO 4 SCORE Locals Make Their First Five Runs on but One Hit: Play Santa Ana Next Anaheim defeated San Berdoo yesterday afternoon at Commonwealth park, Fullerton, for the third straight win of the Calif. Elks league. The scores: Anaheim 7 runs, 5 hits, 2 errors; San Berdoo 4 runs, 3 hits, 4 errors. It was a case of the hitless wonders winning the game, for Anaheim made its first five tallies on but one hit. San Berdoo started off in snappy fashion, scoring one in the first round and two more in the third. Anaheim didn't get into the run column until the fourth inning when Cox, the portly pitcher of the San Berdoos, had difficulty in finding the plate, walking three and hitting another. He had more trouble of the same kind in the next when the locals scored three more. Cox was reduced by Alverado who made four pitchers and was replaced by Lemon. Anaheim scored one more in the seventh and one in the eighth. The visitors got three singles in a row in the eigth which with a walk netted one run. Hawkins replaced Hughes who had been pitching with a sore arm. The game didn't have quite the snap to it that previous league contests have had, either from the standpoint of players or spectators. Probably the fact that there was an Elks convention in Los Angeles last week had something to do with it. Next Sunday Anaheim plays Santa Ana Ellis at the ball park between Orange and Olive. Yesterday Santa Ana defeated Whittier 15-12 in an 11-inning game. NATIONAL LEAGUE Cincinnati -9-11-1 Philadelphia -5-8-2 Cincinnati — Marquard, Donahue Oscar Bruske, of Garden Grove, after conference with Sheriff Jackson today stated he would swear out a complaint against the owner of a Nash roadster, license No.563-255, as the result of an accident on the Newport-rd Saturday evening. Bruske says lie was driving a Ford delivery truck south thru Costa Mesa when the roadster-approaching rapidly took an abrupt turn to the left. To avoid a headon collision, Buskey says he drove into a guy wire and telephone pole. He asserts three men in the roadster appeared to be intoxicated. Arthur Vanneste, of Los Alamitos reported to Sheriff Jackson today that while driving west on the Long Beach-blvd near the Chas. Gillits ranch about6:30 p.m. Sunday, his car was badly damaged by a car driven by G. C. Quale,722 South Flower-st., Los Angeles. According to Vanneste, the Quale car was driving rapidly in the same direction smashing into the rear of his car and damaging his gas tank and left rear fender to the extent of $50. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Beloit, of Pasadena, met with an accident to their auto yesterday when returning from a drive to Newport. Another car, in stopping, failed to signal, which resulted in a damaged radiator and other slight injury to the Beloit car. Mr. and Mrs. Beloit are well remembered here and in Fullerton where they lived on Nicholas-ave. A broken wheel and other damages resulted when the car, driven by Mrs. Gilchrist, of Los Angeles, ran into the curbing near the Wright supply station at Buena Park yesterday afternoon. No one was injured, but the car could not be used for the return trip home. D.J.Pitts of So. Ohio-st was run into near Puente Sunday by J.Graham of Los Angeles at the junction of East Downey-blvd and Covina-rd. Both cars were badly damaged. No one was injured. An accident occurred on West Broadway Saturday night when a car driven by Mrs.Wilson struck the wheel of a car driven by Bull Irwin of Los Angeles, when the Irwin car swerved to the right to avoid striking a child who was crossing the street. Mrs.Wilson was unable to stop her car which was coming from behind in time to avoid striking the Irwin car. Mrs.McDonald, who was in the Irwin car, was thrown out and slightly injured. Several others were thoroly shaken up. Both cars were damaged. No one was injured seriously. TODAY'S RESULTS Taken from Board at Anaheim Howling Alleys. Grandpa Hedges Will Celebrate 4th Tonight If you hear a lotta fireworks popping off this evening, don't call Tex or Oble or Marcus or any of the rest of the police. It won't do any good, because Grandpa Hedges wouldn't be in the humor to heed them, particularly since he had to change a tire on his rural mail fliver this morning. You know how it is, lotta sunshine, elbow grease on these little tire pumps, blue atmosphere and verbal fireworks. But, to go on with the real story—the reason for the fireworks tonight: Mrs. Geo. L., Hedges and boys, Carl and Paul, arrived yesterday from Frankfort, Ind., for an indefinite stay with Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hedges, of W. Center-st. They were expected two weeks ago but one of the boys got sick in Nebraska where they stopped off for a visit. Grandpa Hedges had laid in a supply of fireworks. "These fireworks simply won't keep until next year," says Grandpa Hedges, "and anyway, I want to fire 'em off whether the boys do or not." TODAY'S RESULTS Taken from Board at Anhelm Bowling Alleys. When thru' with Your Plain Dealer, Mail to Orange County Plain Deeds LEADING NEWSPAPER OF NORTHERN ORANGE COUNTY Anaheim, California, Monday, July 18, 1921 Provements Up To Date Anaheim Must Decide Go-Ahead Policy Tues. Tomorrow's setting sun will tell the story of Anaheim's progressiveness, or backwardness, as the votes of the citizens may be cast for or against $160,000 bonds for a new city hall, sewer and water extensions, and a fire pump. As far as had been learned at the C. of C. at noon today there is no group opposition to the passage of these bonds or any item of them. A two-thirds majority is necessary for their approval by the people. It is therefore urgent that every registered voter cast his ballot at either polling place, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Those voters residing north of Center-st or on the north side of Center-st will cast their votes at the Pacific Farm Implement Co.'s premises at Center and Chartres-st; and those residing south of Center-st or on the south side of Center-st will cast their votes at the old city hall now used by the fire department on E. Center-st near Emily-st. Free autos will be tendered to voters for their convenience. It is only necessary to telephone 92 any time during voting hours for this service. It is to be located at the northwest and the western boundary of the way, on land acquired as a parcel the Salt Lake railway. The lease, good until April 1, 1922, with the proviso that if Mr. Newman's lease is extended, he will sub-lease to Anaheim C. of C. for a further period, will be signed by the president and secretary of the C. of C. tomorrow. Authority for this lease was issued by directors July 14. Chas. A. Warren and others, in co-operation with the C. of C., are to use the field, on which an aeroplane is to be located permanently. Mr. Warren plans to inaugurate the aerial photographic business in Anaheim from this center, beginning at once. In a few weeks he hopes to have negatives of every plot of laziness district. This branch Center-st or on the north side of Center-st will cast their votes at the Pacific Farm Implement Co.'s premises at Center and Chartres-st; and those residing south of Center-st or on the south side of Center-st will cast their votes at the old city hall now used by the fire department on E. Center-st near Emily-st. Free autos will be tendered to voters for their convenience. It is only necessary to telephone 92 any time during voting hours for this service. The C. of C. and Kwani's club have been allowed the use of a part of the offices of the Anaheim Union Water Co. as a headquarters and every effort will be made to bring out a full vote on this important occasion. It is not generally understood that the quarters now occupied by city officials in the Masonic Temple must be surrendered to the owners within a few months. The rental paid on these offices represents interest on at least one-half of the amount required or the construction of a new city hall, $75,000. At the end of a few months Anaheim public officials will be in the street, paying at least twice as much as at present or inadequate quarters. The fire hazard at present endured is such that the records of the city are not as well protected as those of the ordinary merchant. The assessment rolls, maps, and other fundamental records of Anaheim if destroyed by fire could not be replaced at any price, according to O. E. Steward, city manager. In the new city hall they will have sufficient vault space to take care of present and future emergencies. All city officials will be provided ample space for present and future needs. A dignified building will take the place of the present eye-sore on E. Center-st. Public-spirited property owners in that vicinity are about to build business premises, the total cost of which promises to treble the cost of the proposed hall. If the latter has not been provided for by the voters tomorrow evening it will be the fault of apathetic citizens of Anaheim. It seems unnecessary to emphasize the value of a big vote for sewer and water extensions. There is insufficient water supply for ordinary service at the present time in the busier hours of use. Cesspools are being dug in great numbers to provide new residents in the newly added subdivisions with a disposal place for their sewage. A continuance of this practice will tend to lower the health record of Anaheim. The bonds for these two items should be carried unanimously. A paltry $500 is required for the purchase of a fire pump, to boost the pressure on the water system "right at the nozzle." Residents have recently suffered large charges for plumbing caused by the unnecessary pressure exerted during fires when this pump, had it been in commission, would have eliminated all your requirements. M. Eugene Durfee, architect for the new Sam Kraemer-bldg on East Center-st, which, by the way, is to be the largest office-bldg in the city, is drawing into the plans for the structure, which he is now preparing, quarters for a number of professional and business men and firms just as they desire them for size, etc. There are a few more such offices available, says Durfee. He is fixing up some very desirable offices or himself along with others. The structure will face 135 feet on Center-st and will drop back 112 feet. It will be two-story and will be finished in the most up-to-date manner with elevator, etc. There will be four-large store rooms on the first floor. The front will be finished in marble, terra cotta and white enamel brick. A point of especial interest to the taxpayer is that Kraemer has agreed to a part wall between his building and the new city hall. This will affect considerable saving for the city in its new municipal building and helps explain why city councilors expect to have the finest city hall in the county altho it will not cost so much as the recently Orange city hall, for instance. Another saving the council hopes to make will be from salvage taken from the old building. The fact that it is not necessary to spend a cent for city hall building site also is a point that is expected to enthuse voters tomorrow. SUN GETS 200-BBL. WELL AT 2000 FEET Upsetting theories and judgments of engineers, geologists and other men wise in the oil game, the Sun Oil Co. at Huntington Beach today has a steady production of about 200 barrels of oil a day. The Sun Co. has demonstrated that there is oil to be had in the strata of oil sand struck by the drillers in that vicinity at about 2,000 feet. Instead of passing up this strata, as every other company's drillers had done as fast as they have gone into it, the Sun managers decided to try it out on the pump. As a result of that determination Sun well No. 3 is today numbered among the producers of the new Huntington Beach field. Under the pump the well is producing steadily. That it produced at all was surprising to oil men who have been watching logs of various wells. Among them it seems to have been an established practice to go thru the shallow strata, the general opinion being that it was non-productive, and go on down thru other formations to gusher sand. The well is located on the north sub-lease to Anaheim C. of C. for a further period, will be signed by the president and secretary of the C. of C. In a few weeks he hopes to have negatives of every plot of land in the Anaheim district. This branch of the photographic science has made great strides since and during COUNTY supervisors, sitting as a board of equalization, today increased the assessment of the Birth Oil Co. $183,255. County Assessor Sleeper's assessment had been $1,153,045. The new assessment is $1,336,300. Last year's assessment was $886,-375. The Birch company has been protesting Sleeper's assessment for the last half dozen years. This is the first their appeals and protests have resulted in a change and it is upward instead of down. The increase, based on last year's tax levy, means an increased cost of about $6000 to Birch company. Sleeper has been arriving at his assessment figures by considering total production, total income, expenses, net profit and on a basis of ten per cent profit, the assessment is made on a 40 per cent valuation. At the hearing last week, two oil engineers, R. B. Moran, representing the Birch company, and C. S. Thomas testified that the life of an oil well was estimated at five years, i.e., was worth what it would produce in five years. The board of equalization took as a basis for assessment the life of a well at 4 1-2 years. Thomas testified that the Birch lease was the most valuable in the Brea field, being over the peak of the oil dome, and would probably continue to produce after other leases had played out. UNSKILLED STUDIO WORKERS ON STRIKE LOS ANFELES, July 18—Between 500 and 600 skilled and unskilled studio workers, including carpenters, painters and electricians, are on strike in Los Angeles today against proposed wage reductions, said to average $1 per day. According to union officials, 400 workers failed to appear this morning at the Lasky studio, one of the largest in the city. Jesse L. Lasky vide new residents in the newly added subdivisions with a disposal place for their sewage. A continuance of this practice will tend to lower the health record of Anaheim. The bonds for these two items should be carried unanimously. A pallet $500 is required for the purchase of a fire pump, to boost the pressure on the water system "right at the nozzle." Residents have recently suffered large charges for plumbing caused by the unnecessary pressure exerted during fires, when this pump, had it been in commission, would have eliminated all such trouble. Voters are urged to go to the polls before undertaking the duties of the day. It is just as easy to do this and it will be a great help to election officers. Vote early and vote for the bonds. PITCH BUCKET LAW SWEEPS SOUTHLAND KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 18. The law of the tar bucket and blacksnake ruled in the southwest during the week-end, according to reports here today. A woman was tarred and feathered Saturday night. Mrs. Beulah Johnson, who has been charged with bigamy was taken from the porch of a hotel at Tenaha, Texas, by masked men in white uniforms, and after being removed to a secluded spot in the country, was tarred. Her clothing was removed before she was punished. Richard Johnson, 70, was taken from his wagon at Warrensburg, Mo., by three armed, masked men, his clothing torn off and flogged. A man named McKnight was beat on at Timpson, Texas, by masked men. No arrests were made in connection with any of the cases. Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. Among them it seems to have been an established practice to go through the shallow strata, the general opinion being that it was non-productive, and go on down thru other formations to gusher sand. INTEREST KEEN IN MOTOR HIGH JINKS "The there high jinks what the dealers' craft of the Orange-co Auto Trades Assn. is preparing for next Saturday night is going to be some big scream." This is what a cherub of the street said today, indicating how widespread is the interest in the forthcoming event. He has that much tip as to what is going to be doing on that eventual evening — and he has just as much information as have any of the dealers, except those who are members of the committee. It is "secret stuff" all the way thru, and even the location is to be kept in the background until the last minute. Secrecy being maintained is making the "boys" all the keener to be "among those present." Herbert O. Davis, secretary of the association, is distributing tickets this week to various members. The members are expected to pass them on at $2 per. The $2 per is the only thing in connection with the affair that is known definitely by any one but the "wise ones." Dealers are permitted to invite friends. Employees of all firms and individuals identified with the county trades' association are eligible as ticket purchasers. Try Plain Dealer Want Ads.
